  • A novel pneumatic artificial muscle actuator (PAM actuator), which has achieved increased popularity to provide the advantages such as high strength and high power/weight ratio, low cost, compactness, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, readily available and cheap power source, inherent safety and mobility assistance to humans performing tasks, has been regarded during the recent decades as an interesting alternative to hydraulic and electric actuators. However, some limitations still exist, such as the air compressibility and the lack of damping ability of the actuator bring the dynamic delay of the pressure response and cause the oscillatory motion. Then it is not easy to realize the performance of transient response of pneumatic artificial muscle manipulator (PAM manipulator) due to the changes in the external inertia load with high speed. In order to realize satisfactory control performance, a variable damper-MagnetoRheological Brake (MRB), is equipped to the joint of the manipulator. Superb mixture of conventional PID controller and a phase plane switching control method brings us a novel controller. This proposed controller is appropriate for a kind of plants with nonlinearity, uncertainties and disturbances. The experiments were carried out in practical PAM manipulator and the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm was demonstrated through experiments, which had proved that the stability of the manipulator can be improved greatly in a high gain control by using MRB with phase plane switching control method and without regard for the changes of external inertia loads.

  • Since, in case of high energy piping, steam jets ejected from the rupture zone may cause damage to nearby structure, it is necessary to design it into consideration of nuclear power plant design. For the existing nuclear power plants, the ANSI / ANS 58.2 technical standard for high-energy pipe rupture was used. However, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) and academia recently have pointed out the non-conservativeness of existing high energy pipe fracture evaluation methods. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a highly reliable evaluation methodology to evaluate the behavior of steam jet ejected during high energy pipe rupture and the effect of steam jet on peripheral devices and structures. In this study, we develop a method for analyzing the impact load of a jet by high energy pipe rupture, and plan to carry out an experiment to verify the evaluation methodology. In this paper, the basic data required for the design of the jet impact load experiment equipment under construction, 1) the load change according to the jet distance, 2) the load change according to the jet collision angle, 3) the load variation according to structure diameter, and 4) the load variation depending on the jet impact position, are numerically obtained using the developed steam jet analysis technique.

  • This paper describes the design and performance of a hovering AUV 'NOAH' constructed at Jeju National University. We analyse the dynamic performance of NOAH using simulation program and carry out depth control test at small basin. The main purpose of NOAH is to carry out fundamental tests on its attitude control and position control. Its configuration is similar to general ROV appearance for underwater works and dimension is $0.75m{\times}0.5m{\times}0.5m$. It has 4 thrusters of 450watt for longitudinal/lateral/vertical propulsion and is equipped with a pressure sensor for measuring water depth and a magnetic compass for measuring heading angle. The navigation of the vehicle is controlled by an on-board Pentium III-class computer, which runs with the help of the Windows XP operating system. These give us an ideal environment for developing various algorithm which are needed for developing and advanced hovering AUV.

  • Industrial robots are powerful, extremely accurate multi-jointed systems, but they are heavy and highly rigid because of their mechanical structure and motorization. Therefore, sharing the robot working space with its environment is problematic. A novel pneumatic artificial muscle actuator (PAM actuator) has been regarded during the recent decades as an interesting alternative to hydraulic and electric actuators. Its main advantages are high strength and high power/weight ratio, low cost, compactness, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, readily available and cheap power source, inherent safety and mobility assistance to humans performing tasks. The PAM is undoubtedly the most promising artificial muscle for the actuation of new types of industrial robots such as Rubber Actuator and PAM manipulators. However, some limitations still exist, such as the air compressibility and the lack of damping ability of the actuator bring the dynamic delay of the pressure response and cause the oscillatory motion. In addition, the nonlinearities in the PAM manipulator still limit the controllability. Therefore, it is not easy to realize motion with high accuracy and high speed and with respect to various external inertia loads in order to realize a human-friendly therapy robot To overcome these problems a novel controller, which harmonizes a phase plane switching control method with conventional PID controller and the adaptabilities of neural network, is newly proposed. In order to realize satisfactory control performance a variable damper - Magneto-Rheological Brake (MRB) is equipped to the joint of the manipulator. Superb mixture of conventional PID controller and a phase plane switching control using neural network brings us a novel controller. • This study proposes a methodology for estimating representative section travel times using individual vehicle travel information under the ubiquitous transportation environment (UTE). A novel approach is to substantialize a concept of dynamic node-links in processing trajectory data. Also, grouping vehicles was conducted to obtain more reliable travel times representing characteristics of individual vehicle travels. Since the UTE allows us to obtain higher accuracy of vehicle positions, travel times for each lane can be estimated based on the proposed methodology. Evaluation results show that less than 10% of mean absolute percentage error was achievable with 20% of probe vehicle rate. It is expected that outcome of this study is useful for providing more accurate and reliable traffic information services.

  • In this paper, we present a new method for reconstructing detailed facial expression from roughly captured data with a small number of markers. Because of the difference in the required capture resolution between the full-body capture and the facial expression capture, they hardly have been performed simultaneously. However, for generating natural animation, a simultaneous capture for body and face is essential. For this purpose, we provide a method for capturing the detailed facial expression only with a small number of markers. Our basic idea is to build a database for the facial expressions and apply the principal component analysis for reducing the dimensionality. The dimensionality reduction enables us to estimate the full data from a part of the data. We justify our method by applying it to dynamic scenes to show the viability of the method.

  • Recently the geosynthetics reinforced retaining wall has been widely used instead of the steel reinforced retaining wall. The geosynthetics reinforced retaining wall is a very dangerous structure if the geosynthetics lose their strength about tension or if it lose their pullout resistence, but it was known that the geosynthetics reinforced wall had a great resistence and was a very safe structure against a earthquake or a dynamic load. It can be said that most important factors in the stability of the geosynthetics reinforced wall are the horizontal length of reinforcement and the vertical distance between two reinforcements. That is to say, as the length of reinforcement is longer, the structure is more stable and as the vertical distance between two reinforcements is shorter, it is more stable. In this study, in order to get the critical condition with a safety rate of 1, various kinds of model tests about geosynthetics reinforced wall has been performed. Photos by B-shutter method has been taken during tests and from photos, which show us the failure state, the critical condition about failure has been conformed. Accordingly the equation, which says the limit of stability in geosynthetics reinforced wall., has been proposed.

  • Several laboratories worldwide have demonstrated the feasibility of producing amorphous silicon thin film transistor (TFT) arrays at temperatures that are sufficiently low to be compatible with flexible foils such as stainless steel or high temperature polyester. These arrays can be used to fabricate flexible high information content display prototypes using a variety of different display technologies. However, several questions must be addressed before this technology can be used for the economic commercial production of displays. These include process optimization and scale-up to address intrinsic electrical instabilities exhibited by these kinds of transistor device, and the development of appropriate techniques for the handling of flexible substrate materials with large coefficients of thermal expansion. The Flexible Display Center at Arizona State University was established in 2004 as a collaboration among industry, a number of Universities, and US Government research laboratories to focus on these issues. The goal of the FDC is to investigate the manufacturing of flexible TFT technology in order to accelerate the commercialization of flexible displays. This presentation will give a brief outline of the FDC's organization and capabilities, and review the status of efforts to fabricate amorphous silicon TFT arrays on flexible foils using a low temperature process. Together with industrial partners, these arrays are being integrated with cholesteric liquid crystal panels, electrophoretic inks, or organic electroluminescent devices to make flexible display prototypes. In addition to an overview of device stability issues, the presentation will include a discussion of challenges peculiar to the use of flexible substrates. A technique has been developed for temporarily bonding flexible substrates to rigid carrier plates so that they may be processed using conventional flat panel display manufacturing equipment. In addition, custom photolithographic equipment has been developed which permits the dynamic compensation of substrate distortions which accumulate at various process steps.
