Modeling fishing-gear systems is essential to better understand the factors affecting their movement and for devising strategies to control movement. In this study, we present a generalized mathematical modeling methodology to analyze fishing gear and its various components. Fishing gear can be divided into a finite number of elements that are connected with flexible lines. We use an algorithm to develop a numerical method that calculates precisely the shape and movement of the gear. Fishinggear mathematical models have been used to develop software tools that can design and simulate dynamic movement of novel fishing-gear systems. The tool allowed us to predict the shape and motion of the gear based on changes in operation and gear design parameters. Furthermore, the tool accurately calculated the swept volume of towed gear and the surrounding volume of purse-seine gear. We analyzed the fished volume for trawl and purse-seine gear and proposed a new definition of fishing effort, incorporating the concept of fished space. This method may be useful for quantitative fishery research, which requires a good understanding of the selectivity and efficiency of fishing gear used in surveys.
This article presents a brief overview of an important area of neutron scattering: the general principles and techniques of elastic, quasielastic and inelastic scattering from a system composed predominately of incoherent scatterers. The methodology is then applied to the study of water, specifically when it is confined in nanometer-scale environments. The confined water exhibits uniquely anomalous properties in the supercooled state. It also nourishes biological functions, and supports essential chemical reactions in living systems. We focus on recent investigations of water encapsulated in nanoporous silica and carbon nanotubes, hydrated water in proteins and water or hydroxyl species incorporated in nanostructured minerals. Through these scientific examples, we demonstrate the advantages derived from the high sensitivity of incoherent neutron spectroscopy to hydrogen atom motions and hydrogen-bond dynamics, aided by rigorous data interpretation method using molecular dynamics simulations or theoretical modelling. This enables us to probe the inter-/intramolecular vibrations and relaxation/diffusion processes of water molecules in a complex environment.
Using disturbance observer (DOB) is effective in enhancing the performance of dynamic system in the presence of disturbances. Recently the definition of disturbance has been expanded to modeling uncertainty including parameter variation, internal disturbance. Various structures of DOB have been proposed to improve sensitivity of system for better disturbance rejection performance. However in the case of improvement of sensitivity function, it tends to bring poor transient response due to cross-coupling and phase lag. Furthermore it could be very sensitive to measurement noise due to increased peak of complementary sensitivity function. In this paper, a dual disturbance observer (Dual-DOB) is proposed to reduce the effect of such cross-coupling. It is possible for us to improve the sensitivity function with additional external DOB with hardly affecting complementary sensitivity function. Thus it is able to have robustness against measurement noise. Since we are able to design DOBs of internal and external loop independently, we could prevent transient response quality from degrading while improving the sensitivity function. The proposed Dual-DOB is applied to a commercial optical disk drive tracking servo system. The experimental result shows that the Dual-DOB is an effective method in rejecting the disturbance as well as improving the tracking performance.
Damage detection methods using structural dynamic responses have received much attention in the past decades. For bridge and offshore structures, these methods are usually based on beam models. To ensure the successful application of these methods, it is necessary to examine the sensitivity of modal properties to structural damages. To this end, an analytic solution is presented of the modal properties of simply-supported Euler-Bernoulli beams that contain a general damage with no additional assumptions. The damage can be a reduction in the bending stiffness or a loss of mass within a beam segment. This solution enables us to thoroughly discuss the sensitivities of different modal properties to various damages. It is observed that the lower natural frequencies and mode shapes do not change so much when a section of the beam is damaged, while the mode of rotation angle and curvature modes show abrupt change near the damaged region. Although similar observations have been reported previously, the analytical solution presented herein for clarifying the mechanism involved is considered a contribution to the literature. It is helpful for developing new damage detection methods for structures of the beam type.
Soft polymeric materials have gained importance in recent years, namely in food, pharmaceuticals, photographic media, adhesives, vibration dampeners and superabsorbers (to name a few), but also as inter-mediates for selforganization of molecules or supramolecules into long range order. Many of these soft materials are close to their gel point, i.e. they are liquids just before reaching their gel point or they are solids which have barely passed the gel point. New rheological methods need to be developed for the understanding of these soft materials; the typical liquid properties (viscosity) and typical solid properties (modulus) are not applicable since they diverge at the gel point. This will be discussed in the following. Fortunately, chemical gelation experiments with model polymers has given insight into the behavior at the gel point (Winter and Mours, 1997). This knowledge of the critical gel provides us with a reference state when working with soft polymeric materials. Chemical gels will serve as model materials for the exploration of physical gels. A novel method for detecting the gel point has been proposed: the instant of liquid-to-solid transition(gel point) is marked by the crossover of the normalized dynamic moduli G'/cos($n_c$$\pi$/2) and G"/sin($n_c$$\pi$/2).>/2).
The purpose of this study is to shed light on the field dynamics of 'lived space' in the light of our intuitive experiential contents by way of investigating three properties of space. While finding inspirations in the field theory of modern physics, investigation of our intuitive responses to the physical and spatial environment leads us to a coherent view of matter and space. We find then that our lived world is more than a system of inert matter; it is a dynamic environment of life in which feeling and mood, spiritual meaning and value, are perpetually infused with matter. Any concept of space, if it is to be meaningful to lift has to somehow acknowledge this fact. Empty space and matter cannot be conceived as mutually exclusive and independent as in classical physics. Rather they should be seen as two different manifestations of an underlying dynamism which permeates the world. The 'properties' of space can only be understood in terms of the 'impact' of material presence. The object cannot be seen as an isolated entity, but the 'conditioning' of its surrounding space has to be understood as an integral part of its being. Lived space can thus be viewed as an emotionally charged field, or a field of emotional energy, whose properties may be described in terms of concentration, mobility and resonance.

Cognitive radio technology enables us to utilize the extra spectrum which is not used by the primary users by sensing the channel condition. To use such an extra spectrum, spectrum allocation is one of the important issues in the cognitive radio networks. The network is dynamic and the available channels are changeable, and the opportunistic channel allocation is required to use the resource efficiently without interference to the primary networks. In this paper, modified proportional fairness scheduling is proposed for cognitive radio networks to satisfy the both fairness and system throughput, and the modified scheduling was designed to reduce the interference to the primary users.
In the early twentieth century, many architects still practised eclectic design elements. Emergence of new building materials such as steel, concrete and glass were not yet found fresh roles in architectural design. It was Brussels that the use of modern materials gave rise to their new forms and gave influence to not only building skins but also spatial organization. Art Nouveau architecture is often seen as revolutionary and pioneering modern architecture against eclectic classicism prevalent in the 18th and 19th centuries. Despite the fact that some scholars point out that Art Nouveau is more a transient phenomenon than modern architecture proper, no one would deny that Art Nouveau carries a good deal of modern characteristics. This paper intends to show rather ambivalent perspectives upon Art Nouveau architecture. Although it insinuates overly dynamic nature in architectural languages, it does not hamper us from reading Art Nouveau as a vital component of modern architecture. Through a careful analysis of the early domestic designs of Victor Horta, it becomes evident that his work can provide modern architecture a meaningful alibi for its growth. Victor Horta's house design is well known to the public, both for his classical tastes and for its changing implementation. Horta's modern quality is never adequately recognized, partly due to his eye catching modern iron properties and sinuous ornamentation. This paper tries to offer an insight into the complicated stage set of the fin-de-$si{\grave{e}}cle$ through the work of Victor Horta whose influence has been immense in the making of modern architecture.
The purposes of this study were to document the fashions adopted by young women in the United States in the 1980s and to explore if and how the dynamic shifts toward postmodernist values influenced those fashion trends. Fifteen U.S. women who were college students in the 1980s were interviewed for the study. In analysis of the data, we focused on social changes during the 1980s and the cultural impact of postmodernism vs. modernism as influential factors. Both postmodern and feminist ideas challenged the mainstream cultural framework of capitalism. U.S. women's styles and behaviors concerning dress reflected characteristics of postmodern consumption patterns, which include nostalgia, ethnic dress, androgyny, eclectic and novel clothing combinations, surprising or humorous appearance, and nonconformity. Despite the critique of conformity and conservatism in dress that had emerged in the 1960s and remained in at least minority or subversive trends, the importance of brand names and designer labels increased in mainstream fashion. This study helps us better understand the dynamics of fashion as it reflects societal and value changes in a transitional time in history.
Sea waves induce significant pressures on coastal surfaces, especially on rocky vertical cliffs or breakwater structures (Peregrine 2003). In the present work, this hydrodynamic pressure is considered as the excitation acting on a piezoelectric material sheet, installed on a vertical cliff, and connected to an external electric circuit (on land). The whole hydro/piezo/electric system is modeled in the context of linear wave theory. The piezoelectric elements are assumed to be small plates, possibly of stack configuration, under a specific wiring. They are connected with an external circuit, modeled by a complex impedance, as usually happens in preliminary studies (Liang and Liao 2011). The piezoelectric elements are subjected to thickness-mode vibrations under the influence of incident harmonic water waves. Full, kinematic and dynamic, coupling is implemented along the water-solid interface, using propagation and evanescent modes (Athanassoulis and Belibassakis 1999). For most energetically interesting conditions the long-wave theory is valid, making the effect of evanescent modes negligible, and permitting us to calculate a closed-form solution for the efficiency of the energy harvesting system. It is found that the efficiency is dependent on two dimensionless hydro/piezo/electric parameters, and may become significant (as high as 30 - 50%) for appropriate combinations of parameter values, which, however, corresponds to exotically flexible piezoelectric materials. The existence or the possibility of constructing such kind of materials formulates a question to material scientists.
