  • Cellulose based electro-active paper(EAPap) is considered as a new smart material which has a potential to be used for biomimetic actuators and sensors. Beside of the natural abundance, cellulose EAPap is fascinating with its biodegradability, lightweight, high mechanical strength and low actuation voltage. When the external stress is applied to EAPap, it can generate the electrical output due to its piezoelectric property. Using piezoelectric behavior of EAPap, we studied the feasibility of EAPap as mechanical strain sensor applications and compared to commercial strain sensor. By measuring the induced output voltage from the thin piezoelectric cellulose EAPap under static and dynamic force, we propose cellulose EAPap film as a potential strain sensor material.

  • This paper propose the method to obtain the inverse kinematics and the Jacobian of the 5-bar parallel robot and apply the nonlinear controller to the 5-bar parallel robot with the dynamic analyses using the Jacobian of the Passive joints with respect to the active ones and singular value decomposition(SVD). It also experimentally shows that we can do high-speed and accuracy tasks using nonlinear control method. And it explains the relation between the property of the position control and manipulability using a new performance index.

  • The penetration force of needle and penetration energy kave been investigated, in order to research into the sewing factors that influence the weft knitted fabric with high elastic property. The results of the studies are a follows: (1) As the results have showed a high correlativity between the needle penetration energy and force, it proves that the dynamic energy produced by the friction of the needle as it penetrates and withdraws from the knitted fabric contributes to the heat growth of the needle. (2) To reduce frictional force the use of thin needles, medium ball point needle and super needle are effective. (3) The reduction in number of plies of fabric or also in the case of a decrease in penetration speed have been effective in lowering the penetration energy and force.

  • In periodic cyclic structures, small property irregularity of their substructured often causes significant difference in their dynamic responses, which results in unpredicted premature failures. The small irregularity and the resulting phenomenon are called the mistuning and the vibration localization, respectively. In this paper a simple coupled multi-pendulum system is employed to investigate the effects of the stiffness mistuning and the phase difference in excitation force on the vibration localization of periodic cyclic structures.

  • An arc welding machine using single switched PFC converter is presented in this paper. First, the basic operation and principle is reviewed. Controller design is intended to force voltage ripple to minimize, and dynamic response to enhance, Feed-forward strategy for arc welding machine is developed, and that is verified by simulation. The improved power factor characteristics of arc welding machine known as low power factor system with nonlinear property, are shown and evaluated compared to conventional one.

  • Extreme loads such as impact and explosion have higher strain rate than static loading condition. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate mechanical properties at high strain rate in order to apply fiber reinforced cement composites to ensure safety performance against impact and explosion. In this study, the compressive properties of fiber reinforced cement composites by strain rate were evaluated.

  • The influence of gamma-irradiation sterilization on the creep and wear performance of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was investigated by conducting the dynamic compressive creep tests and pin-on-disc sliding wear tests. The changes of microstructure property, relative crystallinity, oxidation index, percent crosslinking, were also measured and the relationship between these and creep and wear results was discussed.

  • Electrical stimulation is delivered to auditory nerve (AN) through the electrodes in cochlear implant system. Neurogram is a spectrogram that includes information of neural response to electrical stimulation. We hypothesized that the similarity between a neurogram and an input-sound spectrogram could show how well a cochlear implant system works. In this study, we evaluated electrical stimulus configuration of CIS strategy using the computational model. The computational model includes stochastic property and anatomical features of cat auditory nerve fiber. To evaluate similarity between a neurogram and an input-sound spectrogram, we calculated Structural Similarity Index (SSIM). The results show that the dynamic range and the stimulation rate per channel influenced SSIM. Finally, we suggested the optimal configuration within the given stimulus CIS. We expect that the results and the evaluating procedure could be employed to improve the performance of a cochlear implant system.

  • This paper presents a proof-of-concept investigation on an active tension control using an ER (electro-rheological) brake actuator. Firstly, an ERF (electro-rheological fluid) which has an inherent reversible feature from Newtonian fluid to Bingham fluid upon applying an electric field is composed, and its property is tested to obtain intrinsic parameters of the Bingham model. An appropriate size of the ER brake is manufactured on the basis of the Bingham model, and dynamic characteristics of the brake are experimentally identified. After formulating a governing equation of motion of the tension control system, a sliding mode controller is designed to achieve a certain desired level of tension. Both simulation and experimental works are undertaken in order to demonstrate the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed active tension control method.

  • In this paper, a mathematical model for a belt driven system is proposed to analyse the vibtation characteristics of the driving units with belts and the free and forced vibration analyses are carried out. The mathematical model for model for the belt-driven system includes belts, pulleys, spindle and bearings. Using the Hamilton principle, the 4 nonlinear governing equations and the 12 nonlinear boundary conditions are derived. To linearize and discretize the nonlinear govering equations and boundary conditions, the perturbation method and Galerkin method are used. Also, the free vibration analyses for the various parameters of the belt driven system, which are belt tension, belt length, material property of belt, belt speed and pulley mass are made. The forced vibration analyses of the system are made and the dynamic responses for the main parmeters are analysed with the belt driven system.
