  • This study aims to identify the elasticities and casualties of financial performance and determinants of the mining and extractive companies listed in Jordan's stock market over the 2005-2018 period. The conceptual framework is based on the Resource-Based View theory and Arbitrage Pricing theory is used to describe the relationship between the external environment and the financial performance of the companies. Profitability ratio (return on assets) is utilized as a proxy of financial performance measurement. Meantime, the company's characteristics, macroeconomic variables, and non-economic factors are utilized as independent factors. Data sources are panel data set for mining and extractive companies over the above period. Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS), Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS), and Pooled Mean Group (PMG) methods are applied. The empirical findings indicated that company size, sales growth, financial leverage, liquidity, and GDP growth were the critical determinants of mining and extractive companies' financial performance in the Amman Stock Exchange. Thus, the findings conclude that company characteristics and GDP growth mainly drive financial performance. Moreover, the findings reveal that a bidirectional causal elasticity exists between GDP and financial leverage and return on assets (ROA). Sound financial performance can be obtained by paying more attention to GDP growth and firms' characteristics.

  • The aim of this paper is to empirically investigate whether and how domestic currency valuation is related to firm-level export competitiveness and profitability by using the unique firm-specific dataset on Bangladeshi nonfinancial firms which have been listed continuously from 2010 to 2018. To achieve the aim of this paper, 63 exporting firms are extracted from a total of 125 firms which have been continuously listed during 2010-2018 and used as the final sample firms. The Pedroni cointegration test reveals that export and import prices of the exporting firms are cointegrated in the short-run as well as long-run. The panel dynamic ordinary least square (DOLS) analysis finds that a firm's export competitiveness is maintained by high import inputs even in the presence of depreciation of Bangladeshi currency against the US dollar. Finally, the DuPont analysis finds that the depreciated Bangladeshi currency enhances an exporter's profitability. Conclusions based on the findings are consistent regardless of exchange rate types, such as, real bilateral exchange rate and nominal or real effective exchange rate indexes. Consequently, the firm-level findings of this investigation suggest that undervalution of home currency is essential for Bangaldesh which is one of the frontier markets in South Asia whose exporting firms are mostly price followers in global markets.

  • The exchange rate is an important macroeconomic variable that influences internal and external balances. Nepal follows a dual exchange rate such that the Nepali rupee (NPR) is pegged with the Indian rupee (INR) but floats with the United States dollar (USD) and all other currencies. There have been very few studies on the exchange rate of Nepal, of which the majority focus on the bivariate relationship between exchange rate and another variable. However, this paper analyses the multivariate relationship between the USD-NPR exchange rate and major macroeconomic variables. Determinants of Nepal's exchange rate have been derived with multiple regression using the ordinary least square (OLS) approach. Since the explanatory variables could not significantly capture the movement of the dependent variable, a long-run relationship between Nepal and India's exchange rate has been analyzed using Engle-Granger cointegration to establish a relationship as suggested by a graphical representation. This explains that Nepal's exchange rate long run is determined by India's exchange rate than its own fundamentals. In addition, the macro-linkages of Nepal's macroeconomic variables have been analyzed using Standard Vector Autoregressive models followed by impulse response analysis which is useful for policy decisions. Some policy implications indicating the sustainability of Nepal's pegged regime have been drawn based on the empirical analysis.
