  • In order for medical devices to be used outside hospital, they have to be not only of small size but also power consumption has to be kept at low level. This study investigates the feasibility of application of ADS1298 ECG single-chip solution developed by Texas Instruments Inc. for use in development of a new platform for diagnostic resting ECG. To prove the feasibility of commercial products based on the ADS1298 chip, the performance of the ADS1298 chip was measured in terms of input impedance, common mode rejection, frequency response, and input dynamic range using the testing method under the suitability criteria of the IEC 60601-2-25 standard. Result of the this study shows that commercialization of the ECG products based on the ADS1298 ECG single-chip solution that satisfies the international standards would be possible, if the manufactures take the filter characteristics into account in building a new platform for diagnostic resting ECG.

  • In the ubiquitous health monitoring environments, it is quite important not only to evaluate the physiological health condition but also mental stress condition. In order to achieve this goal, a heart activity monitoring system utilizing a wearable bipolar electrode is devised and the heart rate variability(HRV) is extracted and interpreted in both frequency and time feature domains. Consequently, to evaluate the emotional stress condition of the subjects, a stress-induced experimental protocol was applied to healthy subjects and the time and frequency features of heart activity were analyzed in terms of the ratio of low frequency components v.s., high frequency components and the relevant the moving average distributions compromising the successive RR peaks intervals in the ambulatory ECG measurement system.

  • Recently the convergence of healthcare technology is used for daily life healthcare monitoring. Cardiac arrhythmia is presented by the state of the heart irregularity. Abnormal heart's electrical signal pathway or heart's tissue disorder could be the cause of cardiac arrhythmia. Fatal arrhythmia could put patient's life at risk. Therefore arrhythmia detection is very important. Previous studies on the detection of arrhythmia in various ECG analysis and classification methods had been carried out. In this paper, an ECG signal processing techniques to detect abnormal ECG based on DTW minimum accumulation distance through the template matching for normalized data and variable threshold method for ECG R-peak detection. Signal processing techniques able to determine the occurrence of normal ECG and abnormal ECG. Abnormal ECG detection algorithm using DTW minimum accumulation distance method is performed using MITBIH database for performance evaluation. Experiment result shows the average percentage accuracy of using the propose method for Rpeak detection is 99.63 % and abnormal detection is 99.60 %.

  • In this study, we develope an ambulatory ECG acquisition system by implementing a patch-style and wireless electrode. To alleviate the inherent noisy characteristics of the mobile signal, we apply a matched filter and concurrently detect R-peak values. Moreover, the measure for resolving shape distance is computed to estimate the relative similarity between two ECG signals and to decide whether the abnormal characteristics in ECG exist or not.

  • In this study, dynamic time warping(DTW) is utilized especially for automatically segmenting ECG(Electrocardiogram) signal to extract a periodic time information. For the possible medical application for diagnosing the abnormalities of ECG, the relative metric distance of the warped ECG signals are computed to decide whether the abrupt variations of ECG signal occur or not.

  • Interest is increasing in electrocardiogram (ECG) signal analysis for embedded devices, creating the need to develop an algorithm suitable for a low-power, low-memory embedded device. Linear approximation of the ECG signal facilitates the detection of fiducial points by expressing the signal as a small number of vertices. However, dynamic programming, a global optimization method used for linear approximation, has the disadvantage of high complexity using memoization. In this paper, the calculation area and memory usage are improved using a linear approximated template. The proposed algorithm reduces the calculation area required for dynamic programming through local optimization around the vertices of the template. In addition, it minimizes the storage space required by expressing the time information using the error from the vertices of the template, which is more compact than the time difference between vertices. When the length of the signal is L, the number of vertices is N, and the margin tolerance is M, the spatial complexity improves from O(NL) to O(NM). In our experiment, the linear approximation processing time was 12.45 times faster, from 18.18 ms to 1.46 ms on average, for each beat. The quality distribution of the percentage root mean square difference confirms that the proposed algorithm is a stable approximation.

  • Prolongation in QT corrected interval (QTc), measured in surface ECG, has been shown in the majority af patients to be marker of bad prognosis in postmyocardial infarction patients (PMIP). Hence it would seem logical that dynamic QTc interval measurement can be a very usefull indicator to stratify prognosis in PMIP. We present a new algorithm for QT as well as for QTP (distance value from Q wave onset to T wave peak) intervals measurement in 24 hour ECG Holter tapes. Validation of the algorithm by hand measurement has been done on first beats of 18 Holter tapes, resulting in a magnitude of deviations between 10 and 15 ms. Application on 24 hour Holter ECG signal has also been done.

  • A non-intrusive ECG and BCG measurement system is introduced. The system is built on a auxiliary backrest of a chair. The developed system is aimed to non-intrusive assessment of cardiovascular dynamic indices such as pulse arrival time(PAT) and pre-ejection period (PEP). In the system, capacitive active electrodes and capacitive grounding were used for the non-intrusive indirect-contact ECG measurement, and EMFi pressure sensor was used for the non-intrusive BCG measurement. The capacitive active electrodes and the EMFi sensor were attached on the backrest. Using the system, ECG and BCG were successfully acquired. The measured BCG showed peaks that following ECG R peaks. It was shown that the time interval between Q wave in ECG and first peak in BCG correlates Pre-ejection period measured by impedance-cardiogram. The results showed that the introduced system can be used for the non-intrusive various cardiovascular information including ECG, PAT, PEP.

  • The R wave of QRS complex is the most prominent feature in ECG because of its specific shape; therefore it is taken as a reference in ECG feature extraction. But R wave detection suffers from the fact that frequency bands of the noise/other components such as P/T waves overlap with that of QRS complex. ECG signal processing must consider efficiency for hardware and software resources available in processing for miniaturization and low power. In other words, the design of algorithm that exactly detects QRS region using minimal computation by analyzing the person's physical condition and/or environment is needed. Therefore, efficient QRS detection based on SOM(Subtractive Operation Method) is presented in this paper. For this purpose, we detected R wave through the preprocessing method using morphological filter, empirical threshold, and subtractive signal. Also, we applied dynamic backward searching method for efficient detection. The performance of R wave detection is evaluated by using MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The achieved scores indicate the average of 99.41% in R wave detection.
