In this work we simulate explicitly the dynamic fracture propagation in reinforced concrete beams. In particular, adopting cohesive theories of fracture with the direct simulation of fracture and fragmentation, we represent the concrete matrix, the steel re-bars and the interface between the two materials explicitly. Therefore the crack nucleation within the concrete matrix, through and along the re-bars, the deterioration of the concrete-steel interface are modeled explicitly. The numerical simulations are validated against experiments of three-point-bend beams loaded dynamically under various strain rates. By extracting the crack-tip positions and the crack mouth opening displacement history, a two-stage crack propagation, marked by the attainment of the peak load, is observed. The first stage corresponds to the stable crack advance, the second one, the unstable collapse of the beam.
The dynamic photoelasticity with the aid of Cranz-Shardin type high speed camera system is utilized to record the dynamically propagating behavior of an interface crack. This paper investigates determined the effects of the hole (exited on the path of the crack propagation) on the crack propagation behavior by comparing the experiment isochromatic fringes to the theoretical stress fields.

In this study, we investigated the effect of fatigue crack propagation of the beams which have a vital importance in engineering applications, on the natural frequency of the system. Beams which have a wide range of applications, are used as fundamental structural elements in engineering structures. Therefore, early detection of any damages in these structures is of vital importance for the prevention of possible destructive damages. One of the widely used methods of early detection of damages is the vibration analysis of the structure. Hence, it is of vital importance to detect and monitor any changes in the natural frequencies of the structure. From this standpoint, in this study we experimentally investigated the effect of fatigue crack propagation on beams produced from 4140 steel, of the natural frequency of the beam. A crack was opened on the $8{\times}16{\times}500mm$ beam using a 3 mm long and 0.25 mm wide wire erosion. The beam, then, underwent 3 point bending tests at 10 Hz with a dynamic fatigue device and its natural frequencies were measured in scheduled intervals and any changes taking place on the natural frequencies of the beam were measured. This data allowed us to identify and measure the crack occurring on the beam subjected to dynamic loading, during the propagation phase. This method produced experimental data. The experimental data showed that the natural frequency of the beam decreased with the propagation of the fatigue crack on the beam.
This paper devoted to study dynamic interaction between crack and inclusion or void by developing the eXtended Finite Element Methods (XFEM). A novel XFEM approximation is presented for these structures containing multi discontinuities (void, inclusion, and crack). The level set methods are used so that elements that include a crack segment, the boundary of a void, or the boundary of an inclusion are not required to conform to discontinuous edges. The investigation covers the effects of a single circular or elliptical void / stiff inclusion, and multi stiff inclusions on the crack propagation path under dynamic loads. Both the void and the inclusion have a significant effect on the dynamic crack propagation path. The crack initially curves towards into the void, then, the crack moves round the void and propagates away the void. If a large void lies in front of crack tip, the crack may propagate into the void. If an enough small void lies in front of crack tip, the void may have a slight or no influence on the crack propagation path. For a stiff inclusion, the crack initially propagates away the inclusion, then, after the crack moves round the inclusion, it starts to propagate along its original path. As ${\delta}$ (the ratio of the elastic modulus of the inclusion to that of the matrix) increases, a larger curvature of the crack path deflection can be observed. However, as ${\delta}$ increases from 2 to 10, the curvature has an evident increase. By comparison, the curvature has a slight increase, as ${\delta}$ increases from 10 to 1000.
When the half infinite crack in the orthotropic material strip with a large anisotropic ratio(E11>>E22) propagates with constant velocity, dynamic stress component $\sigma$y occurre d along the $\chi$ axis is derived by using the Fourier transformation and Wiener-Hopf technique, and the dynamic stress intensity factor is derived. The dynamic stress intensity factor depends on a crack velocity, mechanical properties and specimen hight. The normalized dynamic stress intensity factors approach the maximum values when normalized time(=Cs/a) is about 2. They have the constant values when the normalized time is greater than or equal to about 2, and decrease with increasing a/h(h: specimen hight, a: crack length) and the normalized crack propagation velocity( = c/Cs, Cs: shear wave velocity, c: crack propagation velocity).
In this study, a new algorithm analyzing dynamic crack propagation problem by the coupling technique of Meshfree Method and Finite Element Method is proposed. The coupling procedure of two methods is presented with a short description of Meshfree Method especially, Element-free Galerkin (EFG) method. The elastodynamic fracture theory is presented, and a numerical implementation procedure for dynamic fracture analysis by Meshfree Method is also discussed. A couple of dynamic crack propagation problems illustrate the performance of the propsed technique. The accuracy of numerical solutions by the developed algorithm are compared with those of analytical solutions and experimental ones.
The effects of the interface and two holes located near the crack path in the hybrid specimen on the dynamic crack propagation behavior have been investigated using dynamic photoelasticity with the aid of Cranz-Shardin type high speed camera system. The dynamic stress field around the dynamically propagating interface crack tip in the three point bending specimens under a dynamic load applied by a hammer dropped from 0.6m high without initial velocity are recorded. The complex stress intensity factors for the dynamically propagating interface crack are extracted by using a overdeterministic least square method. Theoretical dynamic interface isochromatic fringe loops generated by using the numerically determined complex stress intensity factors are compared with the experimental results. Furthermore, the influence of the hole to the dynamic interface crack velocities has been investigated experimentally.
It has been reported that fatigue damage sometimes occurred at the stress concentrated and dynamic loaded structural members of bulk carrier. In this paper, studies on fatigue strength of hull structures are reviewed, and the program for evaluating fatigue strength is developed. And the fatigue crack initiation and propagation on the end part of cargo hold frame of bulk carrier were calculated by FEM stress analysis and the fatigue strength evaluation program. These method can be applied not only to the crack initiation life but also to crack propagation life for the hull structural members at the hull design stage and be effective as the guideline to prevent the crack initiation or to estimate the fatigue strength for repairing of the fatigue damaged structures of real ships.
