The flexural behaviors of two types of beam members exposed to freeze-thaw cycles were evaluated. This study aims to examine the effect of freeze-thaw cycles on the behavior characteristics of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. For the purpose, a part of the beam specimens were damaged until yielding of tension reinforcement was reached, before they were exposed to 150 and 300 cycles of freeze-thaw. Cyclic tests, as well as monotonic tests, were conducted to evaluate the stiffness degradation characteristics when same cycle is repeated. The material tests showed that relative dynamic modulus of concrete exposed to 300 cycles of freeze-thaw moderately decreased to 86.8% of normal concrete, indicating that concrete used in this study has good durability against freeze and thaw damage. The results of monotonic tests showed reduction of flexural strength, ductility and stiffness of the beam specimens exposed to freeze-thaw cycles compared with those of the control speciments. In particular, BDF13 specimens, which had been subjected to artificial cracking damage, did not showed enough flexural strength to satisfy nominal moment required by current concrete structure design code. In the monotonic tests results, BF75 specimens exposed to freeze-thaw cycles showed 10% or more cyclic stiffness degradation. Therefore, it was thought that deformation of concrete in compression have to be considered in design process of members under cyclic load, such as seismic device.

We evaluated physical properties such as density, compressive characteristics, irrecoverable work, and stress relaxation of red pepper powder with different particle sizes. The particle sizes showed a normal distribution in size, with a particle size of $150{\sim}600{\mu}m$ accounting for 70.95% of the particles in the Hanbando cultivar and 82.21% in the Cheongyang cultivar. Loose bulk density ranged between 0.34 and $0.45g/cm^3$, while tapped bulk density ranged between 0.43 and $0.56g/cm^3$. The Hausner ratio was highest (1.531) at a particle size below $150{\mu}m$ in the Cheongyang cultivar. The compressibility and compression ratios were 0.001351~0.004383 and 1.0062~1.0265, respectively. Irrecoverable work ranged between 69.16% and 90.24%. The $K_2$ value and stress relaxation characteristics were greatest (1.74 and 44.92%, respectively) at particle sizes of $300{\sim}425{\mu}m$ in the Cheongyang cultivar. The dynamic angle of repose was $32.84-49.84^{\circ}$. Overall, particle sizes below $150{\mu}m$ had the highest compactibility, cohesiveness, and transformation.

We present two designs, namely, "Collective I/O" and "Pipelined Collective I/O". In the first scheme, all processors participate in the I/O simultaneously, making scheduling of I/O requests simpler but creating a possibility of contention at the I/O nodes. In the second approach, processors are grouped into several groups, so that only one group performs I/O simultaneously, while the next group performs communication to rearrange data, and this entire process is pipelined to reduce I/O node contention dynamically. In other words, the design provides support for dynamic contention management. Then we present a software caching method using collective I/O to reduce I/O cost by reusing data already present in the memory of other nodes. Finally, chunking and on-line compression mechanisms are included in both models. We demonstrate that we can obtain significantly high-performance for I/O above what has been possible so far. The performance results are presented on an Intel Paragon and on the ASCI/Red teraflops machine. Application level I/O bandwidth up to 55% of the peak is observed.he peak is observed.

In this study, to improve the performance of asphalt mixtures for plastic deformation occurring mainly in Korea, complex modifiers were prepared by mixing powders and liquid type modifiers. The main constituents were powdery diatomaceous earth, mica and carbon black, and liquid type solid 70% SBR latex. The tensile strength ratios for the two asphalt mixtures used in the test were above 0.80 for the Ministry of Land Transportation (2017) asphalt mixture production and construction guidelines. The effects of increasing the tensile strength in the dry state was more than 14% when the composite modifier was added. The deformation rate per minute by the wheel tracking test load was an average of 0.07 to 0.147 for each mixture. The strain rate per minute was improved by the modifier, and the dynamic stability was improved by almost 100% from 295 to 590. In addition, the final settling was reduced from 11.38 mm to 9.57 mm. A plastic deformation test using the triaxial compression test showed that the amount of deformation entering the plastic deformation failure zone at the end of the second stage section and in the third stage plastic deformation section was 1.76 mm for the conventional mixture and 1.50 mm for the complex modifier mixture. The average slope of the complex modifier asphalt mixture mixed with the multi-functional modifier was 0.005 mm/sec. The plastic deformation rate is relatively small in the section where the road pavement exhibits stable common performance, i.e. the traffic load.

The present study focuses on examining the structural behaviour of steel-fibre-reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams under high rates of loading largely associated with impact problems. Fibres are added to the concrete mix to enhance ductility and energy absorption, which is important for impact-resistant design. A simple, yet practical non-linear finite-element analysis (NLFEA) model was used in the present study. Experimental static and impact tests were also carried out on beams spanning 1.3 meter with weights dropped from heights of 1.5 m and 2.5 m, respectively. The numerical model realistically describes the fully-brittle tensile behaviour of plain concrete as well as the contribution of steel fibres to the post-cracking response (the latter was allowed for by conveniently adjusting the constitutive relations for plain concrete, mainly in uniaxial tension). Suitable material relations (describing compression, tension and shear) were selected for SFRC and incorporated into ABAQUS software Brittle Cracking concrete model. A more complex model (i.e., the Damaged Plasticity concrete model in ABAQUS) was also considered and it was found that the seemingly simple (but fundamental) Brittle Cracking model yielded reliable results. Published data obtained from drop-weight experimental tests on RC and SFRC beams indicates that there is an increase in the maximum load recorded (compared to the corresponding static one) and a reduction in the portion of the beam span reacting to the impact load. However, there is considerable scatter and the specimens were often tested to complete destruction and thus yielding post-failure characteristics of little design value and making it difficult to pinpoint the actual load-carrying capacity and identify the associated true ultimate limit state (ULS). To address this, dynamic NLFEA was employed and the impact load applied was reduced gradually and applied in pulses to pinpoint the actual failure point. Different case studies were considered covering impact loading responses at both the material and structural levels as well as comparisons between RC and SFRC specimens. Steel fibres were found to increase the load-carrying capacity and deformability by offering better control over the cracking process concrete undergoes and allowing the impact energy to be absorbed more effectively compared to conventional RC members. This is useful for impact-resistant design of SFRC beams.

The best way of investigating the physical and mechanical properties of subsurface materials is the combined interpretation of data from borehole geophysical surveys and geotechnical experiments with rock samples. In this study two surface seismic surveys with refraction and surface-wave method are alternatively conducted for downhole seismic surveys in test site for geological field trip in Jeungpyung, Chungbuk. P- and S-wave velocity structures are delineated by refraction and MASW (multichannel analysis of shear waves) methods, respectively. Possion's ratio section, reconstructed from P- and S-wave velocities, is correlated to the outcrop geological features consisting of reddish sedimentary rock, gray volcanic rock, and joints/fractures. In addition, rock samples representative for reddish sedimentary and gray volcanic features are geotechnically analyzed to provide physical, mechanical properties, and elastic modulus. Dynamic elastic moduli estimated from geophysical data is found to be higher than the one from geotechnical data. Reddish sedimentary rock characterized with low porosity and moisture content corresponds to the zone of low electrical resistivities and their small variations in the resistivity sections between the rainy and dry days. This trend suggests that the weathered gray volcanic rock and the nearby fractures with higher low porosity and moisture content are interpreted to be good carrier especially in rainy season.
This paper presents an experimental study of the plugging effect on the capacity of open-ended piles installed in sandy soil. Full-scale tests, including dynamic and static axial-compression load tests, were carried out on three instrumented piles with different diameters (508.0, 711.2 and 914.4 mm). To measure the outer and inner shaft resistances acting on the piles, a double-walled system was utilized with instrumented strain gauges on the outside and inside walls of the pile. The results of field tests show that the inner shaft resistance was mostly mobilized at the location between the pile tip and 18-34% of the total plug length. It was found that the soil plugging in the lower portion has influence on the inner shaft resistance. In addition, it can be also demonstrated that the ratio of inner shaft resistance plus annulus load resistance to total resistance decreased with increasing pile diameters. The results of these tests show that the relationship between the degree of plugging and pile diameter is clearly established. Direct observations of the soil plugs were made and used to quantify both the plug length ratio (PLR) and the incremental filling ratio (IFR). Based on this result, it was found that the N value of the standard penetration test (SPT) is highly correlated with the IFR.

This study examined dynamic and characteristics and chloride penetration of concrete mixed with large amount of FA and BFS, which are considered for positive application to construction fields with purpose of long-tern durability of concrete structures. As a result of strength test on FA and BFS, FA concrete showed higher increase of strength compared to OPC, when FA4000 and FA5000 were mixed 30%, respectively. For BFS concrete, those mixed with 30% and 50% of BFS8000, respectively, showed higher or equivalent strength compare to OPC. As a result of test of chloride penetration on FA and BFS, diffusion coefficients of concrete mixed with 30% FA4000 and FA5000, respectively, showed to restrain average 6.5% of diffusion coefficient compared to OPC. And in case of BFS concrete, those mixed with BFS6000 and BFS8000, restrained diffusion of chloride ions 253% and 336%, respectively, compared to OPC. Therefore, Mixing 50% of BFS was most efficient in order to maximize restraint of chloride penetration according to metathesis of large amount. For relation between compression strength and diffusion coefficient of FA and BFS concrete, as strength increased, diffusion coefficient decreased. In this study, when mixing FA and BFS to concrete for long-run durability and restraint against chloride penetration, for FA, mixing it to concrete with less or equivalent 30% of replacement rate was most efficient. And for BFS, as fineness was higher and mixing it to concrete with less or equivalent 50% of replacement rate, there were results of higher strength compared to OPC and more efficient restraint of chloride ions.
The objectives of this paper are to develop the structural condition evaluation technique using Falling Weight Deflectometer deflections and propose the structural condition criteria for asphalt pavements. To figure out correlation between surface deflections and critical pavement responses, the synthetic database has been established using the finite element pavement structural analysis program. A regression approach was adopted to develop the pavement response model that can be used to compute the stresses and strains within pavement structure using the FWD deflections. Based on the pavement response model, the procedure for assessing the structural condition of pavement layers was proposed in this study. To validate the condition evaluation procedure for asphalt pavements, the FWD test, dynamic cone penetrometer test, and repeated triaxial compression test were conducted on 11 sections of national highway and 8 sections of local road. Test results indicate that the tensile strain at the bottom of AC layer and AC elastic modulus were good indicators for estimating the stiffness characteristics of AC layer. For subbase layer, the BDI value and compressive strain on top of the subbase layer were appropriate to predict the structural capacity of subbase layer. The BCI value and compressive strain on top of the subgrade were found to be good indicators for evaluating the structural condition of the subgrade. The evaluation criteria for structural condition in asphalt pavements was also proposed in this paper.

Peridynamics has been widely used in the dynamic fracture analysis of brittle materials. Recently, various crack patterns(compact region, floret, Hertz-type crack, etc.) of multilayered glass structures in experiments(Bless et al. 2010) were implemented with a bond-based peridynamic simulation(Bobaru et al.. 2012). The actual glass layers are bound with thin elastic interlayer material while the interlayer is missing from the peridynamic model used in the previous numerical study. In this study, the peridynamic interlayer modeling for the multilayered structures is proposed. It requires enormous computational time and memory to explicitly model very thin interlayer materials. Instead of explicit modeling, fictitious peridynamic particles are introduced for modeling interlayer materials. The computational efficiency and accuracy of the proposed peridynamic interlayer model are verified through numerical tests. Furthermore, preventing penetration scheme based on short-range interaction force is employed for the multilayered structure under compression and verified through parametric tests.
