  • This study investigated the adsorption of safflower yellow dye on wool protein fiber and the optimum dyeing conditions to test color reproducibility. In addition, the effects of mordants on dye adsorption, color, fastness, and photofading rate were also studied. The prepared dye in powder form was characterized with UV-vis spectroscopy and FT-IR spectrometric analysis. The color of dyed fabrics was characterized by CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ coordinates, H V/C, and K/S values. The color reproducibility of the dyed wool fabrics was examined. The amount of dye adsorption increased and also, the shade of the dyed wool fabrics became deeper and more saturated with increasing temperature, time, and dye concentration. The maximum color strength was obtained at pH 3.0. The shade of dyed wool fabrics ranged from light yellow to dark mustard yellow as the pH of the dye bath shifted from alkaline to acidic. Color reproducibility was reliable with color differences in the range of 0.53~1.75. Fastness to dry cleaning was relatively good at 4/5 rating irrespective of mordanting. Fe and Cu mordants showed the least color change of the dyed wool fabrics after exposure to light. Mordants did not contribute to improve dye uptake and color fastness, although they made variations in color tone. Safflower yellow dye can be used satisfactorily without mordants and will not cause damage to the environment.

  • Eosin Y is used a colorant and dye but eosin Y is harmful toxic substance. In this study, the adsorption characteristics of granular activated carbon have been investigated for the adsorption of eosin dye dissolved in water. The effects of initial dye concentration, contact time, pH and temperature on adsorption of eosin by a fixed amount of activated carbon have been studied in batch adsorber and fixed bed. The adsorptivity of activated carbon for eosin Y were largely improved by pH control. When the pH was 3 in the sample, the eosin Y could be removed 99% of initial concentration (10 mg/L). The adsorption equilibrium data are successfully fitted to the Freundlich isotherm equation in the temperature range from 293 to 333 K. The estimated values of k and ${\beta}$ are 19.56-134.62, 0.442-0.678, respectively. The effects of the operation conditions of the fixed bed on the breakthrough curve were investigated. When the inlet eosin Y concentration is increased from 10 to 30 mg/L, the corresponding adsorption breaktime appears to decrease from 470 to 268 min at bed height of 3 cm and a constant flow rate of 2 g/min. When the initial eosin Y flow rate is increased from 1 to 3 g/min, the corresponding adsorption breaktime appears to decrease from 272 to 140 min at bed height of 3 cm and inlet concentration of 10 mg/L. Also, breaktime increased with increasing bed height at flow rate of 2 g/min and inlet concentration of 10 mg/L. And length of adsorption zone showed similar patterns.

  • Isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamic properties for adsorption of acid fuchsin (AF) dye by activated carbon were carried out using variables such as dose of adsorbent, pH, initial concentration and contact time and temperature. The effect of pH on adsorption of AF showed a bathtub with high adsorption percentage in acidic (pH 8). Isothermal adsorption data were fitted to the Freundlich, Langmuir, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. Freundlich isothem model showed the highest agreement and confirmed that the adsorption mechanism was multilayer adsorption. It was found that adsorption capacity increased with increasing temperature. Freundlich's separation factor showed that this adsorption process was an favorable treatment process. Estimated adsorption energy by Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm model indicated that the adsorption of AF by activated carbon is a physical adsorption. Adsorption kinetics was found to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Surface diffusion at adsorption site was evaluated as a rate controlling step by the intraparticle diffusion model. Thermodynamic parameters such as activation energy, Gibbs free energy, enthalpy entropy and isosteric heat of adsorption were investigated. The activation energy and enthalpy change of the adsorption process were 21.19 kJ / mol and 23.05 kJ / mol, respectively. Gibbs free energy was found that the adsorption reaction became more spontaneously with increasing temperature. Positive entropy was indicated that this process was irreversible. The isosteric heat of adsorption was indicated physical adsorption in nature.

  • In this study the optimum dyeing conditions and blocking effect of UV deodorization efficiency of Ligustrum japonicum Thunb were investigated. Colorants were water-extracted from Ligustrum japonicum Thunb fruit and freeze-drided to obtain colorants powder. The effects of dye concentration, dyeing temperature, dyeing time, and the number of dipping count were studied. Fastness to dry cleaning, rubbing, perspiration, and light were measured according to KS K 0644, KS K 0650, KS K 0715 and KS K 0700, respectively. In order to examine the dyeability according to dyeing conditions, reflectance of fabrics were measured by using UV/VIS spectrophotometer. The bath ratio was 1:20. Dyeing concentration was 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500% on the weight of fiber. Dyeing time was 20, 40, 60, and 80 minutes. Dyeing temperature was 20, 40, 60, 80, and $100^{\circ}C$. The infrared high pressure dying machine was used. As dyeing concentration increased, dye adsorption increased up to 400% and it slowed down. Dye uptake was increased with raising themperature up to $80^{\circ}C$ and it slowed down. Dye adsorption occurred rapidly at first 20 minutes and then it slowed down and reached almost maximum dye uptake at 60 min. Dye uptake increased by repeated dyeing. Therefore, it is considered that optimum dyeing condition is 400%(o.w.f.), $80^{\circ}C$, 60 min. And repeated dyeing improves dye uptake. Color fastness to dry cleaning and rubbing was good, but light fastness and perspiration fastness was not good. Blocking effect of ultraviolet radiation and deodorization efficiency was good.

  • Dyeing properties of silk fabric on gromwell roof colorants were studied for the effect of dyeing conditions, such as methanol ratio, colorants concentration, pH, temperature and time etc. on the dye uptake and effect of mordants and mordanting methods on color change and dye uptake. And various colorfastnesses of dyed fabrics were evaluated far practical use. Gromwell colorants showed high affinity to silk and its isotherm adsorption curve was Freundlich type close to Nernst type. Therefore, it is considered that hydrogen bonding and Van der Waals force were involved in the adsorption of cromwell colorants to silk fabric. Post-mordanting method gave higher K/S value than other methods, but it was not significantly different color values from unmordanted one. Gromwell colorants produced mainly R and RP color depending on mordants and mordanting method. Dyed fabrics showed high colorfastness irrespective of mordanting treatment. Light colorfastness was increased for repeatedly dyed and Fe mordanted dyed fabrics.

  • The process parameters of ethyl violet from aqueous solution by activated carbon adsorption were carried out as a function of pH, temperature, contact time, initial concentration and temperature. The adsorption equilibrium data can be described well by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Base on Langmuir constant ($R_L=0.0343{\sim}0.0523$) and Freundlich constant (1/n=0.1633~0.1974), This process could be employed as effective treatment for adsorption of ethyl violet. The kinetic experimental results showed that the adsorption process can be well described with the pseudo second order model. Based on the positive enthalpy (6.505 kJ/mol), the adsorption of ethyl violet onto granular activated carbon is endothermic. The negative Gibbs free energy (-1.169~-1.681 kJ/mol) obtained indicates that the adsorption process is spontaneous and physisorption.

  • Adsorption experiments of Acid Yellow 14 dye using activated carbon were carried out as function of adsorbent dose, pH, initial concentration, contact time and temperature. The equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm model. The experimental data were best represented by Freundlich isotherm model. Base on the estimated Freundlich constant (1/n=0.129~0.212) and Langmuir separation factor ($R_L=0.202{\sim}0.243$), this process could be employed as effective treatment method. The heat of adsorption of Temkin isotherm model was 5.101~9.164 J/mol indicated that the adsorption process followed a physical adsorption. Adsorption kinetics experimental data were modeled using the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. It was shown that pseudo-second-order kinetic equation could best describe the adsorption kinetics. Base on the negative Gibbs free energy (-4.81~-10.33 kJ/mol) and positive enthalpy (+78.59 kJ/mol) indicate that the adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic process.

  • Batch experiment studies were carried out for adsorption of congo red using granular activated carbon with various parameters such as activated carbon dose, pH, initial dye concentration, temperature and contact time. Equilibrium experimental data are fitted to the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubin-Radushkevich isotherm equations. From Freundlich's separation factor (1/n) estimated, adsorption could be employed as effective treatment method for adsorption of congo red from aqueous solution. Base on Temkin constant (B) and Dubinin-Radushkevich constant (E), this adsorption process is physical adsorption. Adsorption kinetics has been tested using pseudo-first order and pseudo second order models. The results followed pseudo second order model with good correlation. Adsorption process of congo red on granular activated carbon was endothermic (${\Delta}H$=42.036 kJ/mol) and was accompanied by decrease in Gibbs free energy (${\Delta}G$=-2.414 to -4.596 kJ/mol) with increasing adsorption temperature.

  • Eosin yellow is used a dye and colorant but it is harmful toxic substance. In this paper, batch adsorption studies were carried out for equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamic parameters for eosin yellow adsorption by activated carbon with varying the operating variables like pH, initial concentration, contact time. Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted into Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. By estimated Langmuir constant value, $R_L$=0.067-0.083, and Freundlich constant value, $\frac{1}{n}=0.237-0.267$, this process could be employed as effective treatment for removal of eosin yellow. From calculated Temkin constant, value, B=1.868-2.855 J/mol, and Dubinin-Radushkevich constant, value, E=5.345-5.735 kJ/mol, this adsorption process is physical adsorption. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption process were found to confirm to the pseudo second order model with good correlation coefficient($r^2$=0.995-0.998). The mechanism of the adsorption process was determined two step like as boundary and intraparticle diffusion.

  • Loess, a natural clay, was evaluated as an adsorbent for the decolorization of Acid Orange II, an azo and reactive dye, from aqueous solution. Adsorption studies were performed at $30^{\circ}C$ and the effect of reaction time, loess dosage, initial concentration, loess particle size, pH, agitation rate were investigated to determine the optimum operation conditions. The removal efficiencies of color were measured to evaluate the effectiveness of loess. From this study, it was found that optimal reaction time was 10 min. Color removal efficiencies of Acid Orange II were increased as higher loess dosage, initial concentration and agitation rate. However, color removal efficiencies decreased when pH is high and loess particle becomes large. Adsorption of Acid Orange II fitted to the pseudo-second-order rate kinetics more than first-order rate kinetics. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm constants and correlation coefficients were calculated and compared. It was concluded that the adsorption data of Acid Orange II onto loess fitted to the Freundlich model more than Langmuir model.
