  • This paper presents an implementation of Pill controller for DC-DC converter using the microcontroller. The features of the microcontroller such as the on chip ADC and Pulse width Modulator (PWM) eliminate the external components needed to perform these functions. The duty rate cycle for the DC-DC converter can be updated every time when the (ADC) conversation and the calculation time are finished. The stable response can be obtained for any kind of DC-DC converters. The SMPS controller looks at the converter output, compares the output to a set point, performs a control algorithm (Pill algorithm) and finally applies the algorithm output to the PWM. PWM output is then used to drive the DC-DC converter. Figure (1) shows a simplified block diagram of a complete DC-DC converter system.

  • Robotized MIG welding of large aluminium components for high speed trains is state-of-the-art. The implementation of online laser cameras enables seam tracking and adoptive modification of welding parameters. A constant fill is achieved regardless of the gap tolerances. Friction Stir Welding has been introduced to the market as a reliable and fast joining technology. The advantages of high welding speeds and the elimination of arc light, fumes and liquefaction in the welding spot lead to economical realisation of heavy-duty gantry systems. FSW robots offer a high flexibility with regard to welding of curved parts, and can be equipped with laser cameras for exact joint tracking.

  • This paper explains the design and fabrication of an inverter for LCD backlight using a multilayer piezoelectric transformer. That inverter is operated by the burst dimming method whose dimming signal is controlled by the duty ratio of rectangular switching signal to a PWM controller. The brightness of CCFL's are investigated according to the various dimming signals, and when those CCFL's are turned on, the temperature distributions on the piezoelectric transformer and circuit components of the inverter are also investigated by a thermo-camera.

  • This paper deals with the slip power recovery system using switch mode converter in the inverter DC side, which recovers slip power of induction machine to AC line with the aid of the boost converter. As a results, the motor speed can be controlled by the duty ratio of boost switch, not by inverter firing angle. This results that the reactive power produced by phase controlled inverter and diode rectifier can be greatly reduced and linear speed regulation can be obtained. Moreover, the harmonic components of line current caused by the commutation in inverter and rectifier can be considerably suppressed. Therefore, most of the problems in conventional system can be solved.

  • The values of physical components of the plants and controllers as well as the relevant environmental conditions change in time, thus the output performance can be deteriorated during the operating span of the system. Naturally the duty of calibration or the prevention of performance deterioration due to excessive component sensitivity should be provided to the control system. The proposed controller, whenever necessary, measures the open-loop and close-loop characteristics, and then calculates the offset and sensor gain correction values based on the prepared standard measurements It is applied to the control of a flexible link system with the gain and offset calibration problems in the light sensor module for position to show the applicability. In this paper, we propose a digital controller which has the capability of calibration gain and offset adjustment using fuzzy methods.

  • This paper proposes a new soft switching technique for a phase-shift controlled bi-directional DC-DC converter. The described converter employs a low profile high frequency transformer and two active full-bridge converters for bidirectional power flow capability. A new soft switching technique is proposed, which guarantees soft switching over wide range (no load to full load) without any additional circuit components. In the proposed switching scheme, the switch pairs in the diagonal position of the converter each are turned on/off simultaneously by the switching signals with a variable duty ratio depending on the phase shift amount, and the converter is operated without freewheeling interval.

  • In this paper, a new scheme of current programmed control for three phase PWM AC-AC converter is presented. Compared to duty-ratio voltage control, current programmed control has several advantages such as reduction of system order, inherent current protection and robust output. By considering only the magnitude components, a similar scheme in the DC-DC converter can be extended to the three phase PWM AC-AC converter. The proposed current programmed control will be well adopted into various converter topologies though three phase PWM AC-AC boost converter is treated as an example. The converter analysis is carried out by applying the vector DQ transformation to obtain physical insight into the converter operation and to establish some important characteristic equations for control purpose. The experiment results show the validity of the proposed scheme.

Non-isolated Bidirectional Soft-switching SEPIC/ZETA Converter with Reduced Ripple Currents

  • A novel non-isolated bidirectional soft-switching SEPIC/ZETA converter with reduced ripple currents is proposed and characterized in this study. Two auxiliary switches and an inductor are added to the original bidirectional SEPIC/ZETA components to form a new direct power delivery path between input and output. The proposed converter can be operated in the forward SEPIC and reverse ZETA modes with reduced ripple currents and increased voltage gains attributed to the optimized selection of duty ratios. All switches in the proposed converter can be operated at zero-current-switching turn-on and/or turn-off through soft current commutation. Therefore, the switching and conduction losses of the proposed converter are considerably reduced compared with those of conventional bidirectional SEPIC/ZETA converters. The operation principles and characteristics of the proposed converter are analyzed in detail and verified by the simulation and experimental results.

Analysis of Fuelling Sequence and Fatigue Life for 4-Bundle Shift Refuelling Scheme in CANDU6 NPP

  • A 4-bundle shift refuelling method of CANDU6 F/H (Fuel Handling) System is analyzed to assess the operational flexibility and capacity of F/H system. The current 8-bundle shift refuelling scheme requires to refuel eight fuel bundles from a single fuel channel, and to refuel 14 fuel channels in a week on average assuming that the reactor is in a steady state. The analysis showed that the 4-bundle shift refuelling method increases F/M (Fuelling Machine) duty cycle and operator load. However, the fuellin’g method change from the 8- to 4-bundle shift refuelling ill not require additional team of operators. A marginal increase in the maintenance cost may be resulted in by the change of fuelling method and the increase of fatigue usage factors requires some components to be replaced during the FM lifetime.

Development of Super-capacitor Battery Charger System based on Photovoltaic Module for Agricultural Electric Carriers

  • Purpose: In this study, a maintenance free super-capacitor battery charging system based on the photovoltaic module, to be used in agricultural electric carriers, was developed and its charging characteristics were studied in detail. Methods: At first, the electric carrier system configuration is introduced and the electric control components are presented. The super-capacitor batteries and photovoltaic module used in the experiment are specified. Next, the developed charging system consisting of a constant current / constant voltage Buck converter as the charging device and a super-capacitor cell as a balancing device are initiated. The proposed circuit design, a developed PCB layout of each device and a proportional control to check the current and voltage during the charging process are outlined. An experiment was carried out using a developed prototype to clarify the effectiveness of the proposed system. A power analyzer was used to measure the current and voltage during charging to evaluate the efficiency of the energy storage device. Finally, the conclusions of this research are presented. Results: The experimental results show that the proposed system successfully controls the charging current and balances the battery voltage. The maximum voltage of the super-capacitor battery obtained by using the proposed battery charger is 16.2 V, and the maximum charging current is 20 A. It was found that the charging time was less than an hour through the duty ratio of 95% or more. Conclusions: The developed battery charging system was successfully implemented on the agricultural electric carriers.
