  • The transport mechanisms of the MTES (methyltriethoxysilane) templating silica/a-alumina composite membrane were evaluated by using four binary and one quaternary hydrogen mixtures through permeation experiments at unsteady- and steady-states. Since the permeation flux in the MTES membrane, through the experimental and theoretical studies, was affected by molecular sieving effects as well as surface diffusion properties, the kinetic and equilibrium separation should be considered simultaneously according to molecular properties. In order to depict the transient multi-component permeation on the templating silica membrane, the GMS (generalized Maxwell-Stefan) and DGM (dust gas model) were adapted to unsteady-state material balance.

  • For identification and apportionment of sources emitting particulate matters in environment, the multi-elemental characterization of size-density fractionated particulate matters was carried out. Eight types of samples were tested; soil, flyash released from burning of bunker-Coil, diesel oil, coal, and soft coal, urban road-way dust, urban dust fall, and airborne particulate matter. The fractions of particulate matters obtained by heavy liquid separation methos with a series of dichloromethane-bromoform were then analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry for Ni, Cr, Cu, An, Fe, Al, and Mg. Each sample showed a different concentration profile as a function of density, and a number of useful conclusions concerning characterization of elemental distribution were obtained. From the density distributions of elements in soil, the maximum value was found for all elements in the density range of 2.2 $\sim 2.9g.cm^{-3}$, including the density of $SiO_2$. However, the distribution of metallic compounds with the density lower than $2.2g.cm^{-3}$ was prevalent in urban roadway dust, urban dust fall, and airborne particulate matter. And the density distribution curves of these urban dusts also have the higher distribution at the density of 2.2 - 2.9g.cm^{-3}$, including the density of wind-blown silica. This tendency generally was prevalent in the natural source elements, such as Al, Fe, Mn, and Mg. The maximum values were found in the density ranges of 1.3 $\sim 2.2g.cm^{-3}$ from the density distribution of elements in oil fired flyash. These distributions of anthropogenic source elements, such as Zn, Ni, Cu, and Cr were higher predominately than those of natural source elements. And the higher distribution was found in the density range of $2.2 \sim 2.9g.cm^{-3}$ from the density distribution of elements in coal and soft-coal fired flyash. These distributions showed similar patterns to soil. But anthropogenic source elements somewhat predominated at the density ranges of $1.3 \sim 2.2g.cm{-3} and 2.9g.cm^{-3}$ to soil. Therefore the higher distribution of anthropogenic source elements in the density ranges of $1.3 \sim 2.2g.cm^{-3} and 2.9g.cm^{-3}$ was considered as anthropogenic origin.

  • We present images of L1551 IRS5 at angular resolutions as high as ${\~}$30 mas, corresponding to a spatial resolution of ${\~}$5 AU, made at 7 mm with the VLA. Previously known to be a binary protostellar system, we show that L1551 IRS5 is likely a triple protostellar system. The primary and secondary components have a projected separation of ${\~}$46 AU, whereas the tertiary component has a projected separation of ${\~}$11 AU from the primary component. The circumstellar dust disks of the primary and secondary components have dimensions of ${\~}$15 AU, whereas that of the tertiary component has a dimension of ${\~}$10 AU. Their major axes are closely, but not perfectly, aligned with each other, as well as the major axis of the surrounding flattened, rotating, and contracting molecular condensation (pseudodisk). Furthermore, the orbital motion of the primary and secondary components is in the same direction as the rotational motion of this pseudodisk. We suggest that all three protostellar components formed as a result of the fragmentation of the central region of the molecular pseudo disk. The primary and secondary components, but apparently not the tertiary component, each exhibits a bipolar ionized jet that is centered on and which emergers perpendicular to its associated dust disk. Neither jets are resolved along their base, implying that they are driven within a radial distance of ${\~}$2.5 AU from their central protostars. Finally, we show evidence for what may be dusty matter streams feeding the two main protostellar components.

  • Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) followed by gas chromatographic separation and mass spectrometric (MS) detection were used in rapid analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's) in air particulate material extracted for 30 min with 10 ml of supercritical $N_2O$ without another sample preparation step. Two samples, urban dust in Seoul area and a certified air particulate reference material 1649 supplied by the NBS (National Bureau of Standards), were processed for the purpose of evaluating extraction and analysis methods. As a result, the quantitative recovery of PAH's in the SFE method was relatively lower than conventional organic solvent extraction methods, but reproducibility was resonable, and analysis time was reduced remarkably. The method has proved to be suitable for monitoring of PAH's in air particulate material.

  • We present preliminary results of 1.1 and 1.3 mm dust continuum and 12CO (J=2-1) line data obtained with the Submillimeter Array toward six cores harboring Class 0/I objects in the λ Orionis cloud. They are located in bright rimmed clouds, which are exposed to the far-ultraviolet radiation field by the O-type star λ Ori. Compact dust continuum emission is observed from all six cores. Among the six cores, only one core G196.92-10.37 shows a signature of binarity with separation of 4000 AU. The numbers of singles and binaries in our sample are five and one, respectively and the derived multiplicity frequency (MF) is 0.17. This value is lower than those found in the binary surveys toward Class 0/I objects, which may be a hint for negative feedback by the nearby massive star, lambda Ori. The derived excitation temperature (Tex) using 12CO emission shows a lower median value (20 K) than those of triggered star-forming regions (30 K). The lower MF and Tex support our previous study that star formation was not triggered in the λ Orionis cloud. We aim to further investigate whether the Class 0/I YSOs in the λ Orionis cloud have less circumstellar materials and smaller accretion rates than in other filamentary clouds (e.g., Orion A & B), which might be attributed to negative feedback from the massive star in limiting accretion of protostars.

  • There are several steps such as slicing, lapping, chemical etching and mechanical polishing in the silicon wafer production process. The chemical etching step is necessary to remove damaged layer caused In the slicing and lapping steps. The typical etching liquor is the acid mixture comprising nitric acid, acetic acid and hydrofluoric acid. At present, the waste acid is treated by a neutralization method with a high alkali cost and balky solid residue. A solvent extraction method is applicable to separate and recover each acid. Acetic acid is first separated from the waste liquor using 2-ethlyhexyl alcohols as an extractant. Then, nitric acid is recovered using TBP(Tri-butyl phosphate) as an extractant. Finally hydrofluoric acid is separated with the TBP solvent extraction. The expected recovered acids in this process are 2㏖/l acetic acid, 6㏖/1 nitric acid and 6㏖/l hydrofluoric acid. The yields of this process are almost 100% for acetic acid and nitric acid. On the other hand, it is important to recover and reuse the metal values contained in various industrial wastes in a viewpoint of environmental preservation. Most of industrial products are made through the processes to separate impurities in raw materials, solid and liquid wastes being necessarily discharged as industrial wastes. Chemical methods such as solvent extraction, ion exchange and membrane, and physical methods such as heavy media separation, magnetic separation and electrostatic separation are considered as the methods for separation and recovery of the metal values from the wastes. Some examples of the application of solvent extraction to the treatment of wastes such as Ni-Co alloy scrap, Sm-Co alloy scrap, fly ash and flue dust, and liquid wastes such as plating solution, the rinse solution, etching solution and pickling solution are introduced.

  • Due to recent development in nanotechnology and increasing usage and production of nanomaterials, numerous studies related to environment, sanitation and safety handling of nanoparticle are being conducted. Since nanoparticles can be easily absorbed into human bodies through breathing process, based on their toxic substances and their large specific surface, these particles can cause serious health damage. Therefore, to reduce nanoparticle emissions, nanofiltration technology is becoming a serious issue. Filtration is a separation process during which a fluid passes through a barrier by removing the particles from the stream. Barrier filters can be made of various materials and shapes. One of the most common type of barrier filter is the fibrous filter. Fibrous filters are divided in two types: nonwoven and woven fabrics. Polypropylene is a thermoplastic material, used as a base material for melt blown nonwoven fabric. In this study, we examined filtration property of KCl nanoparticles with a mean particle diameter of 75 nm using multilayer meltblown filter samples. These experiments verify that the penetration of nanoparticle in the filter correlate with pressure drop; the meltblown layer MB1 has the greatest effect on dust collection efficiency of the filter. Among all tested samples, dust collection efficiency of 2-layer filter was best. However, when considering the overall pressure drop and dust collection efficiency, the 4-layer filter has the highest quality factor for particles smaller than 70 nm.

  • 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride is a chemical substance in which three acyl chlorides are located at 1,3,5 position in the benzene ring, and is an important chemical for the area where the good physical and chemical properties are required through high degree of crosslinking. In particular, it is possible to form a three-dimensional structure having a certain pore size, it is used in various separation and purification fields. However, the high reactivity of acyl chloride has the advantage of a fast reaction rate, which means that it is difficult to control chemically to have a certain performance in other aspects. Therefore, in this study, we observed how the chemical change of 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride affected the membrane performance.

  • Recently, various stakeholder are interested in microplastic to cause pollution of the marine's ecosystem and effort to conduct study of product's life cycle to reduce pollution of marine's ecosystem. The micorplastic refer to materials of the nano- to micro- sized units and it can be classified into primary and secondary. The primary microplastic mean the manufactured for use in the specific field such as the microbead of the cosmetic or cleanser. also, secondary mean the unintentionally generated during use of the product such as the textile crumb by the doing the laundry. Tire and Road Wear Particles(TRWPs) are also defined as secondary microplastic. Typically, TRWPs are created by friction between the tread compound's rubber of the tire and the surface of the road du ring the driving cars. Most of the generated TRWPs exist on the roadside and some of them were carried to marine by the rainwater. In this study, we perform the quantitative analysis of the TRWPs existed in fine dust at the roadside. So, we collected the dust from the roadside in Chungcheongnam-do's C site with a movement of 1,300 cars per the hour. The collected samples were separated according to size and density. And shape analysis was performed using the Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM). We were possible to discover a lot of TRWPs at the fine dust of the 100 ± 20 ㎛. And we analysis it u sing the Thermo Gravimetric Analysis(TGA) and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometer(GC/MS) for the quantitative components from the tire. As a result, it was confirmed that TRWPs generated from the roadside fine dust were included the 0.21 %, and the tire and road components in the generated TRWPs consisted of the 3:7 ratio.
