  • Recently, functional clothes that can reduce deposition and/or penetration of fine dust have been developed. However, there are no methods to quantitatively evaluate the performance of these clothes. In this study, we developed a method to contaminate a fabric using fine dust and established an approach to quantitatively assess the degree of particle contamination on the fabric surface. Silicate powder was chosen as the particle to simulate fine dust because silicate particles are fluorescent under UV light; therefore, they can be distinguished from any color of non-fluorescent fabric surface. A camera with a high-resolution lens system was used to scan the surface of the contaminated fabric surface, and the degree of particle contamination of the fabric surface was analyzed in terms of the pixels corresponding to the area of the fabric surface contaminated by silicate particles. Finished or unfinished nylon fabrics as well as cotton fabrics were contaminated with silicate particles, and their surfaces were scanned using the established camera. The proposed assessment method was found to be useful for quantitatively comparing the degree of particle contamination of the fabrics.

  • Measurements of $PM_{10}$ mass concentration, aerosol light scattering and absorption coefficients as well as aerosol size distribution were made to characterize the aerosol physical and optical properties at the two Korean WMO/GAW regional stations, Anmyeondo and Gosan. Episodic cases of the severe Asian dust events occurred in spring of 2009-2010 were studied. Results in this study show that the aerosol size distributions and optical properties at both stations are closely associated with the dust source regions and the transport routes. According to the comparison of the $PM_{10}$ mass concentration at both stations, the aerosol concentrations at Anmyeondo are not always higher than those at Gosan although the distance from the dust source region to Anmyeondo is closer than that of Gosan. The result shows that the aerosol concentrations depend on the transport routes of the dust-containing airmass. The range of mass scattering efficiencies at Anmyeon and Gosan was 0.50~1.45 and $0.62{\sim}1.51m^2g^{-1}$, respectively. The mass scattering efficiencies are comparable to those of the previous studies by Clarke et al. (2004) and Lee (2009). It is noted that anthropogenic fine particles scatter more effectively the sunlight than coarse dust particles. Finally, we found that the aerosol size distribution and optical properties at Anmyeondo and Gosan show somewhat different properties although the samples for the same dust_episodic events are compared.

  • This paper has comprehensively reviewed fine dust control technology from emission sources. Owing to the stringent national regulation, domestic industries have made consistent efforts to develop the high efficiency facilities since 1960s. In these days, harmful particulate pollutants including dioxins and PAHs as well as $PM_{2.5}$ are also of critical interests in government and civic groups. In addition, simultaneous treatment of gas and particles is being widely studied. It is believed that hybrid facilities which integrate a few advanced equipment may meet the atmospheric guidelines.

  • Temperature history of very small interstellar dust particles is followed under diffuse interstellar radiation. Because of extremely small thermal capacities of these grains with sizes ranging from a few tens to hundred Angstroms in radii, they are to experience strong fluctuations in temperature whenever they are hit by interstellar ultraviolet photons. Fluctuating temperature can inhibit these smaller component of interstellar dust from growing into core-mantle particles of submicron sizes by continuously evaporating atoms and molecules adsorbed on their surface. This is interpreted as a possible physical reason for the bimodal nature in grain size distribution. A brief discussion is also given to the far infrared emission properties of such small grains in diffuse interstellar dust clouds.

  • Split-flow thin (SPLITT) cell Fractionation(SF) is a technique that allows separation of particulates and macromolecules into two fractions. A gravitational SF(GSF) system is constructed and tested for its applicability for separation of dust and ground water particulates. When tested with polystyrene latex particles, experimental data were in good agreements with theory. The 9.8 and 21.4㎛ polystyrene particles were successuflly separated in a continuous mode, where the mixture is continuously fed into the GSF channel allowing separation in a large sacle. The GSF system is successfully applied to continuous separation of dust and ground water particels based on the sedimentation coefficient, which is closely related to the particle size. The separations were confirmed by microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysos.

  • A large fraction of urban $PM_{10}$ concentrations is due to non-exhaust traffic emissions including road dust, tire wear particles, and brake lining particles. Although potential health and environmental impacts associated with tire wear debris have increased, few environmentally and biologically relevant studies of actual tire wear debris have been conducted. Tire wear particles (TWP) are released from the tire tread as a result of the interaction between the tire and the pavement. Roadway particles (RP), meanwhile, are particles on roads composed of a mixture of elements from tires, pavements, fuels, brakes, and environmental dust. The main objective of present study is to identify the contribution of tires to the generation of RP and to assess the potential environmental and health impacts of this contribution. First, a mobile measurement system was constructed and used to measure the RP on asphalt roads according to vehicle speed. The equipment of the mobile system provides $PM_{10}$ concentrations by Dusttrak DRX and number density & size distribution measurements of fine and ultra-fine particles by a fast mobility particle sizer (FMPS) and an aerosol particle sizer (APS). When traveling on an asphalt road at constant speed, there is a clear tendency for $PM_{10}$ concentration to increase slightly in accordance with an increase in the vehicle speed. It was also found that considerable brake wear particles and particles from tire/road interface were generated by rapid deceleration of the vehicle. As a result, the $PM_{10}$ concentration and particle number of ultra-fine particles were measured to be very high.

  • A metal fiber bed has seldom been applied to the practical filtration process despite its excellent mechanical and chemical stability. The filter-bed used in this work was highly porous with open structure, of which apparent porosity was 80 ∼ 90%. Although pressure loss across the filter-bed was very low, separation efficiency was found to be quite high. This paper focuses on the basic filtration mechanisms of a metal filter-bed and a thin ceramic filter from fly ash for reference. The experimental parameters were face velocity, dust loading and porosity of filter-bed. Pressure drop increased with increasing face velocity and dust feeding load for both filters. It also showed that dust particles deposited in the deep flow path, finally resulting in clogging the pore channels. It thereby indicates that the dominating mechanism of the metal filter-bed would be depth filtration. Meanwhile, the thin fly ash composite filters trapped the aerated dust mainly on the surface of the filter medium, so that the instantaneously formed dust layer might cause a steep increase of pressure drop across the filtration system.

  • It is highlighted that increasing the adsorbent surface area on volumetric basis is very important in providing an easy access for gas molecules. Fine particles around $3{\mu}m$ of soft-burned dolomite kiln dust (SB-DKD) were hydrated to wet slurry samples by ball mill process and then placed in a chamber to use spray dryer method. Spherical granules with particle size distribution of $50{\sim}60{\mu}m$ were prepared under the experimental condition with or without addition of a pore-forming agent. The relationship between bead size of the pore-forming agent and size of SB-DKD particles is the most significant factor in preparation of spherical granules with a high porosity. Whereas addition of smaller beads than SB-DKD resulted in almost no change in the surface porosity of spherical granules, addition of larger beads than SB-DKD contributed to obtaining of the particles with both 15 times larger average pore volume and 1 order of magnitude larger porosity. It is considered that spherical granules with improved $N_2$ gas adsorption ability may also be utilized for other atmospheric gas adsorption.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of fine particles concentration and meteorological parameters, and long range transport of wintertime Asian dust at Busan. Also we studied occurrence frequency and tendency of wintertime Asian dust from 1961 to 2010 in Korea. Asian dust occurred most frequently in the spring, the next to winter in Korea. Wintertime Asian dust is steadily increasing recently. Asian dust in Busan was the most occurred in 2001 with 21 days, followed by 12 days in 2002, and 10 days in 2006. The annual mean frequency during the past 12 years(1999~2010) was 7.5 days, and it was two times more than that during the past 50 years(3.8 days). Wintertime Asian dust in Busan has occurred 6 episodes since 2008, and it all occurred in December except for 20 Feb. 2009. The highest concentration of wintertime Asian dust was recorded mostly at Hakjangdong and Jangrimdong which are industrial area. Maintenance time of Asian dust at Busan was from 1hr 30min to 9hr 20min, it was shorter than in the spring. It took from 10 to 15 hours move to Busan after Asian dust was first detected in Korea. Wintertime Asian dust originated from Gobi desert in Mongolia and inner Mongolia near China, except for 9 Dec. 2008 at Busan.
