In this study, MMA-modified paste of coating material for protecting the concrete structures was developed. The coating material was applied to cement concrete specimens by brush, roller and spray in each of which one, two and three layers to survey, by the cold-hot iterative test, the neutralization test, the chloride ion permeation test and the ante-abrasion test, the affect of painting methods and layers influencing on the durability of coating material. Results of the cold-hot iterative test showed that, regardless of the painting methods and layers, the defects such as crack or fuzz on surface were not produced. As the number of painting layers increased, the neutralization prevention as well as the chloride ion permeation prevention effects were increased. On the other hand, no difference was found between the painting methods. Reducing weight by abrasion of polymer paste coating material was $20\%$ comparing to that of cement mortar.
The durability of ballast plays an important role in track behaviour. To estimate the deterioration characteristics of ballast, several tests have been carried out by several scholars. The deterioration characteristics is very important factor in the behaviour of track and its life. In this paper, abrasion/breakage characteristics of ballast is studied to see the effect of physical ballast characteristics on ballast life. To reveal breakage characteristics of ballast, the ballast box test and the MTT field test were carried out. The breakage characteristics studied in this paper is applied to the ballast life prediction in various conditions, such as LA abrasion, annual tonnage, tamping number per year, etc
The evaluation of durability of resin concrete was examined through various tests, i.e., compressive strength, absorption, abrasion, chemical attack resistance and bond between general and resin concrete. 2 types of concrete were used such as 40 MPa of general concrete and 90 MPa of resin concrete. The characteristics of resin concrete was more improved than that of general concrete, and especially, resin concrete was most effective on compressive strength, the resistance to $H_2SO_4$ solution attack and absorption. However, abrasion. is almost same between general concrete and resin concrete.
To develop a waterproof breathable material, we fabricated three kinds of nanofiber web laminates using a massproduced electrospun nanofiber web with different substrates and layer structures. The waterproofness and breathability of nanofiber web laminates were evaluated after repeated launderings and compared with those of conventional waterproof breathable fabrics currently in use, including densely woven fabric, microporous membrane laminated fabric, and coated fabric. The durability of nanofiber web laminates, including adhesion strength, abrasion resistance, tensile strength, and tearing strength, was also assessed and compared with those of conventional waterproof breathable fabrics. The water vapor transmission of nanofiber web laminates increased slightly after repeated launderings, whereas the air permeability somewhat decreased after launderings but still maintained an acceptable level of air permeability. Laundering reduced the resistance to water penetration of nanofiber web laminates, which implies that laminating techniques or substrate materials that could support waterproofness of the laminated structure should be explored. The adhesion strength, abrasion resistance, tensile strength, and tearing strength of nanofiber web laminates were in a range comparable to conventional waterproof breathable materials.

This study investigated the mechanical and durability performance of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) with fly ash for dam applications. A test program studied the effects on the properties of fresh and hardened RCC with fly ash replacement ratio, as well as the long-term durability of the resulting mixture. Fly ash replaced 20, 30, 40, and 50% by mass of the cement. Laboratory tests of the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, shear strength, chloride ion permeability, abrasion, and drying shrinkage were conducted. The test results demonstrated that 30% fly ash replacement is an optimum level, and that this mixture has excellent mechanical and durability properties.
Dam concrete for pumped storage power plants should have sufficient durability in repetitive wet and dry conditions and abrasion due to water level fluctuation and also in freezing and thawing resistance as well as permeability capacity. This study presents various experimental results to enhance the durability of face slab concrete in CFRD(concrete faced rockfill dam) by varying the fly ash substitution such as 0%, 15%, 20% and 25% and polypropylene such as 0%, 0.1%. The effect on durability of concrete corresponding to the increasing amount of fly ash and polypropylene was evaluated and the optimum quantity of fly ash and polypropylene substitution was recommended. The results show that 20% of fly ash substitution and 0% of polypropylene were found out to be an optimum quantity to achieve excellent performances in durability for face slab concrete in CFRD.
Dam concrete should have sufficient durability in wet and dry repetition and abrasion due to water lever variance and also in freezing and thawing resistance as well as water penetration capacity. This study presents various experimental performance to enhance the durability of face slab concrete in concrete face rockfill dam by varying the fly ash substitution of 0%, 10%, 15% and 20% in cement quantity. The effect on durability corresponding to the increasing amount of fly-ash was evaluated and the optimum quantity of fly-ash subtitution was finally recommended. The results show that 15% fly-ash substituion was found out to be an optimum quantity and demonstrated an excellent performances in durability.
The influence of reinforcing UHMWPE powder on the tribological and mechanical properties of HDPE was investigated. The circularizing of UHMWPE powder was improved by high-speed rotation to enhance particle distribution and flowability. HDPE composites reinforced with UHMWPE powder in the range of 0-50 wt% were prepared by co-rotating twin screw extrusion. The abrasion resistance, plane friction coefficient, tensile strengths, and impact strengths of the composites were investigated as a function of the UHMWPE content. An increasing UHMWPE content decreased the plane friction coefficient and increased the abrasion resistance and impact strength. It is expected that HDPE composites reinforced with spherical UHMWPE powder particles can be used to improve the durability of products such as pipes in the future.
Although concrete is believed to be a durable material, concrete structures have been degraded by severe environmental conditions such as the effects of chloride and chemical, abrasion, and other deterioration processes. Therefore, durability evaluation has been required to ensure the long term serviceability of structures located in chloride exposed environments. Recently, probability-based durability analysis and design have proven to be reliable for the service-life predictions of concrete structures. This approach has been successfully applied to durability estimation and design of concrete structures. However, currently it is difficult to find an appropriate method engineers can use to solve these probability-based diffusion problems. In this paper, computer software has been developed to facilitate probability-based durability analysis and design. This software predict the chloride diffusion using the Monte Carlo simulation method based on Fick's second law, and provides durability analysis and design solutions. A graphic user interface (GUI) is adapted for intuitive and easy use. The developed software is very useful not only for prediction of the service life but for the durability design of the concrete structures exposed to chloride environments.
The results of Saemangeum seadike field inspection and material testing of armor stones in order to analyze causes of abrasion according to material characteristics of seaside armor stones in Saemangeum seadike are in the following: 1. The armor stones in Saemangeum seadike have been constructed by using internal stones (mainly, sinsi stones) and external stones, which had less strength (77.3 %) and more abrasion rate (133.3 %) compared with sinsi stones. 2. The compressive strength and abrasion rate were compared between ordinary wave section and high wave section for the purpose of analyzing the influence of waves. In compressive strength, sinsi stones were 4.0 % stronger and external stones were 0.6 % stronger in ordinary wave section than those of high wave section in average. In the case of abrasion rate, sinsi stones were 3.0 % higher and external stones were 8.2 % higher in the high wave section than those in the ordinary section. 3. The result of comparing compressive strength according to a zone is that the compressive strength in the Intertidal area was less strong in most of the zones. 4. Considering that deviated stones are moving around over the surface of armor stones in situ, it is important to compare material characteristics. So the comparison test about this factor showed that deviated sinsi stones were stronger than armor stones in situ in terms of compressive strength and resistance to abrasion. Based on these results, abraded armor stones may have resulted from their durability. Therefore it is assumed that armor stones are likely to be abraded when deviated stones which are more durable are moving around over armor stones which are less durable.
