  • In this paper, It is presented that concrete-filled composite piers have large energy-absorption capacity and high strength and stiffness on account of mutual confinement between the steel plate and filled-in concrete. Concrete-filled composite columns were tested to failure under axial compression and cyclic lateral loading. Displacement ductility index obtained by using the load-displacement relation has been increased with the increment of filled-in concrete length, while it has been decreased according to the incrementation of width-thickness ratio, slenderness ratio and the number of loading cycles. Structural behavior and ductility index estimated for the seismic design showed that composite piers could be used as a very efficient earthquake-resistant structural member. The response modification factor could be re-evaluated for concrete-filled composite piers.

  • This study is performed to investigate the behavior of multi-column piers and to evaluate the seismic performance. In this study, 3 types of scale model piers with 2-column are designed and tested by quasi-static load in both longitudinal and transverse directions. Each type of model consisting of 2 specimens has different reinforcement details in the lap splice of longitudinal bars and amount of transverse reinforcements. This paper reports that the ductility of the model in transverse direction is rather higher than in longitudinal direction because of formation of several plastic hinges and that the ultimate displacement and the energy absorbtion capacity are enhanced by using continuous longitudinal bars instead of lap-splice ones. And it is confirmed that relatively large amount of ductility can be achieved by providing sufficient lap-splice length and transverse reinforcements with end hook even if longitudinal bars are lap spliced in the base of pier.

  • For the fast construction and replacement of bridges in urban area, a prefabricated bridge system can be an excellent alternative. Details of prefabricated slabs for PSC girders were developed and static tests on shear connections were conducted to propose design equations of the shear connection. Stirrups and stud connectors were used as shear connectors and non-shrink mortar was used for the filling material in shear pockets for shear connectors. Stirrups and studs were fabricated to insert embedded nut-type devices in PSC girders. Shear strength of the shear connection considering chemical bond, friction and mechanical connectors was evaluated and empirical equations were suggested. Due to the mechanical connectors, ultimate slip capacity of the shear connection was sufficient for shear load redistribution, and suggested details of the shear connection showed good performance in terms of strength and ductility.

  • In general, flexural strength and ductility of reinforced concrete beam with stirrup depend on the compressive strength of concrete and longitudinal steel ratio. In this study, nine reinforced high strength lightweight concrete beams and three reinforced normalweight concrete beams with stirrup were tested to investigate their behavior and to determine their ultimate moment capacity. The variable were strength of concrete (400, 500kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$) and the ratio of tensile steel content to the ratio of the balanced steel content(0.22<$\rho$/$$\rho$_b$<0.56). Test results are presented in terms of load-deflection behavior, ductility index, and cracking patterns.

  • Under severe lateral loads, ductile moments-resisting reinforced concrete frames will be subjected to large loads and displacements. Thus, large deformation and shear stree are occurred at the beam-column joints which are the most critical region in ductile moments-resisting system. The purpose of this study was to investigate the shear strength of beam-column connection using high strength concrete. Four subassemblies were designed 2/3 scale of read structures and tested. The obtained results are as follows. 1) The transverse beams increase the shear resistance and ductility of joint, 2) The slab was contributed to increase of the flexural capacity of the beam, but was not contributed to increase the joint ductility under cyclic loads. 3) The shear stress factors. given by the ACI code would be modified in evaluating the shear strength of beam-column joints of frame which were constructed with high-strength concrete.

  • It is known that lap splice in the longitudinal reinforcement of reinforced concrete(RC) bridge columns is not desirable for seismic performance, but it is sometimes unavoidable. Lap splices were practically located in the potential plastic hinge region of most bridge columns that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Bridge Design Specification on 1992. The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete(RC) bridge piers with lap splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region, to develop the enhancement scheme of their seismic capacity by retrofitting with glassfiber sheets, and to develop appropriate limited ductility design concept in low or moderate seismicity region. Nine test specimens in the aspect ratio of 4 were made with three confinement ratios and three types of lap splice. Quasi-static test was conducted in a displacement-controlled way under three different axial load levels. A significant reduction of displacement ductility ratios was observed for test columns with lap splices of longitudinal steels.

  • An experimental study was carried out to evaluate the structural performance of new retrofitting technology using high performance carbon fiber bar and strengthening metal fittings. Experimental programs were accomplished to evaluate the structural performance of test specimens, such as load-displacement relationship, crack propagation, ductility, and strain of retrofitting materials etc.. Specimens(BCR2, BCR2-AF1) designed with the new retrofitting technology using high-performance carbon fiber bar and strengthening metal fittings showed much higher load-carrying capacity and ductility compared to specimens(BC1P, BC2P, BS30) designed with the conventional retrofitting method.

  • Investigations on the behavior of steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete beams with shear confinement are accomplished to determine their ultimate shear strength including diagonal tension strength. The parameters varied were the shear confinement ratio(Ps), and fiber volume fraction(Vs). Ultimate shear strength increased significantly in steel fiber reinforced concrete beam without shear confinement. In steel- fiber reinforced high strength concrete beams with shear confinement, there is no increase of ultimate shear strength but shows much beneficial effects of Ductility Capacity.

  • In this paper, the behavior of interior steel fiber reinforced concrete beam - column joints (BCJs) under cyclic loading is investigated. An experimental program including tests on twelve reinforced concrete (BCJs) specimens under cyclic loading was carried out. The test specimens are divided into two groups having different geometry: group (G1) (symmetrical BCJs specimens) and group (G2) (nonsymmetrical BCJs specimens). The parameters considered in this study are the steel fibers (SFs) content by volume of concrete (Vf), the spacing of shear reinforcement at the joint region, and the area of longitudinal flexural reinforcement. Test results show that the addition of 0.5% SFs with stirrups spacing S=Smax has effectively enhanced the overall performance of BCJs with respect to energy dissipation, ductility ratio, spreading and width of cracks. The failure of specimens is governed mainly by the formation of a plastic hinge at the face column and outside the beam-column junction. Secondary shear cracks were also observed in the beam-column junctions.
