Creep Behaviour of Al-Zn-Mg Ternary Aluminum Alloy (Al-Zn-Mg 3원계 알루미늄 합금의 크리프 거동)

  • To make practical applications of Al-Zn-Mg ternary aluminum alloy effectively in various field, a series of static creep tests under the 16 temperature-stress combination conditions had been performed. The creep tester with constant stress loading was designed and made by the authors and used in this study. The higher the creep temperature rose, the less the stress exponents became. The bigger the applied stresses became, the less values the creep strain activation energy showed. The life prediction constant of Larson-Miller parameter was calculated as about 2.3. In the fractography, the ductile fracture with dimples by intergranular breakage was primarily observed. We can make practical use of these test data in the design, the life prediction and the prevention of the accidents of the thermal facilities, etc.

Less amout of lap-spliced longitudinal bars as an alternative of seismic detailing for limited ductility design (한정연성도 설계를 위한 소수 겹침이음을 갖는 주철근 상세에 관한 연구)

  • In present Korea Highway Bridge Standards the lap splice of longitudinal bars in a potential plastic hinge region is allowed so that large amount of transverse rebar specified in high seismicity regions Is required to prevent brittle bond failure If the brittle failure effects can be completely removed from the conventional designed piers, the amount of transverse rebar will be reduced drastically. In this study scaled models with solid and hollow rectangular sections were tested to investigate the seismic behavior of RC piers with 50% of lap-spliced longitudinal bars in plastic hinge regions. In the tests the typical flexural failure conducting a ductile behavior were observed in both models. It is shown that the 50% of lap-spliced bars can be considered as a good alternative of seismic detailing for longitudinal bars.

  • Considering the increased threats from worldwide terrors and the increased demands on the blast resistant design of commercial buildings, this study is aimed at understanding the basic concept of blast resistant design and evaluating the blast performance with an actual design example. Although there are many differences between earthquake and blast loads, the design concept against both loads is similar in terms of allowing the plastic behavior of a structure and sharing the ductile detailing. Through the blast performance evaluation of a target building provided in this study, it is noted that a well-designed building for the conventional loads can have a certain level of blast resistance. However, this cannot be generalized since the blast load on a structure varies depending on the type of weapon, TNT equivalence, standoff distance, etc. Architectural planning with positioning the sacrificial structure or maintaining a sufficient standoff distance from the expected detonation is the simple and effective way of improving the blast resistance of a building.

Seismic Characteristics of Hollow Rectangular Sectional Piers with Reduced Lateral Reinforcements (횡방향철근이 감소된 중공사각단면 교각의 내진거동 특성)

  • The seismic design concept of RC bridges is to attain the proper ductility of piers, yielding a ductile failure mechanism. Therefore, seismic design force for moment is determined by introducing a response modification factor (R), and lateral reinforcements to confine core concrete are specified in the current design code. However, these design provisions have irrationality, which results in excessive amounts of lateral reinforcements for columns in Korea, which are generally designed with large sections. To improve on these provisions, a new design method based on seismic performance has been proposed. To apply this to hollow sectional columns, however, further investigations and improvements must be performed, due to the different seismic behaviors and confinement effects. In this study, hollow sectional columns with different lap-splice of longitudinal bars and lateral reinforcements have been tested. Seismic characteristics and performance were investigated quantitatively. These research results can be used to derive a performance-based design for hollow sectional columns.

A Study on the Correlation between Advanced Small Punch Test and Charpy V-notch Test on X20CrMoV121 and 2.25Cr1Mo steels Weldment (X20CrMoV121강과 2.25Cr1Mo강 용접부의 ASP 시험과 CVN 충격 시험의 상관관계에 대한 연구)

  • Charpy V-Notch test is commonly used to evaluate fracture toughness. However, since the region to be evaluated is limited to bulk material due to the specimen size required, individual evaluation of micro-structures on weldment is very difficult. In this study, ASP(Advanced Small Punch) test was carried out to evaluate material degradation and fracture toughness on the B.M, W.M and each micro-structures of HAZ for X20CrMoV121 and 2.25Cr1Mo steels with artificial aging time. In addition, to evaluate fracture toughness and material degradation of B.M and W.M of X20CrMoV121 steels with aging times, CVN (Charpy V-notch) test was performed. And then the correlation between ASP and CVN test on X20CrMoV121 steels was obtained. Furthermore, through this correlation, material degradation property of each micro-region of the HAZ in weldment, which was impossible to be evaluated by the CVN test, can be estimated and determined.

  • Titanium alloy has widely been used as material for glasses frame parts because it has high specific strength. It is also light and harmless to human body. However, we have little design data about the mechanical properties such as the creep behaviors of the alloy. Therefore, in this study, creep tests under four constant stress conditions have been conducted with four different temperature conditions. A series of creep tests had been performed to get the basic design data and life prediction of titanium products and we have gotten the following results. First, the stress exponents decrease as the test temperatures increased. Secondly, the creep activation energy gradually decrease as the stresses became bigger. Thirdly, the constant of Larson-Miller parameter on this alloy was estimated as about 2.5. Finally, the fractographs at the creep rupture showed the ductile fracture due to the intergranullar rupture and some dimples.

Seismic response estimation of steel plate shear walls using nonlinear static methods

  • One of the major components for performance based seismic design is accurate estimation of critical seismic demand parameters. While nonlinear seismic analysis is the most appropriate analysis method for estimation of seismic demand parameters, this method is very time consuming and complex. Single mode pushover analysis method, N2 method and multi-mode pushover analysis method, modal pushover analysis (MPA) are two nonlinear static methods that have recently been used for seismic performance evaluation of few lateral load-resisting systems. This paper further investigates the applicability of N2 and MPA methods for estimating the seismic demands of ductile unstiffened steel plate shear walls (SPSWs). Three different unstiffened SPSWs (4-, 8-, and 15-storey) designed according to capacity design approach were analysed under artificial and real ground motions for Vancouver. A comparison of seismic response quantities such as, height-wise distribution of floor displacements, storey drifts estimated using N2 and MPA methods with more accurate nonlinear seismic analysis indicates that both N2 and MPA procedures can reasonably estimates the peak top displacements for low-rise SPSW buildings. In addition, MPA procedure provides better predictions of inter-storey drifts for taller SPSW. The MPA procedure has been extended to provide better estimate of base shear of SPSW.

Experimental study on the Behavior of RC Bridge Piers with Various Aspect Ratio (철근 콘크리트 교각의 형상비에 따른 거동 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Short reinforced concrete bridge piers are particularly susceptible to shear failure as a consequence of the high shear/moment ratio and conservatism in the flexural strength design of existing RC bridge pier, which were constructed before 1992. In addition, shear failure is brittle and involves rapid strength degradation. Inelastic shear deformation is thus unsuitable fur ductile seismic response. It is, however, believed that there are not many experimental research works fur shear failure of the existing RC bridge pier in Korean peninsula subjected to earthquake motions. The object of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of existing circular RC bridge piers by the quasi-static test. Existing RC bridge piers were moderate seismically designed in accordance with the conventional provisions of Korea Highway Design Specification. This study has been performed to verify the effect of aspect ratio (column height-diameter ratio). Quasi-static test has been done to investigate the physical seismic performance of RC bridge piers, such as lateral force-displacement hysteric curve, envelope curve etc.

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to study the behavior of high-strength RC wide beam-column joints with slab subjected to reversed cyclic loads under constant axial load. Six half scale interior wide beam-column assemblies representing a portion of a frame subjected to simulated seismic loading were tested, including three specimens without slab and three specimens with slab. The primary variables were compressive strength of concrete( $f_{ck}$ =240, 500kgf/c $m^2$), the ratio of the column-to-beam flexural capacity( $M_{r}$=2$\Sigma$ $M_{c}$$\Sigma$ $M_{b}$ ; 0.77-2.26), extended length of the column concrete($\ell$$_{d}$ ; 0, 9.6, 30cm), ratio of the column-to-beam width(b/H ; 1.54, 1.67). Test results are shown that (1) the behavior of specimen using high-strength concrete satisfied the required minimum ductile capacity according to increase the compressive strength, (2). In the design of the wide beam-column joints, one should be consider the effects of slab stiffness which is ignored in the current design code and practice.ice.e.e.
