  • Over the past several decades, embedded system and flight control computer technologies have been evolved to meet the diverse needs of the mobile device market. Current embedded systems are at the heart of technologies that can take advantage of small-sized specialized hardware while still providing high-efficiency performance at low cost. One of these key technologies is multiple memory banks. For example, a dual memory bank can provide two times more memory bandwidth in the same memory space. This benefit take lower cost to provide the same bandwidth. However, there is still few software technologies to support the efficient use of multiple memory banks. In this study, we present a technique to efficiently exploit multiple memory banks by software support. Specifically, our technique use an interference graph to optimally allocate data to different memory banks by an optimizing compiler. As a result, the execution time can be improved upto 7% with the proposed technique.

  • We must stabilize quickly increasing waste matters in urban life and livestock industry. Biogas including landfill gas and digester gas is byproduct of anaerobic decomposition of organic waste matter and contains 40%-70% methane, which can be used for energy purposes. Utilization of biogas reduce the emission of methane into the atmosphere to minimize greenhouse effect and the carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted when biogas is converted to energy has been taken out of the atmosphere by growing plant. Recently, bioenergy is world-widely noticeable as all contributing to the greenhouse effect. This paper presents development process of a biogas engine for cogeneration system and results of application to digester gas and landfill gas in site. The biogas engine is a dual fuel engine operated on biogas with a diesel pilot. At present, the engine can substitute biogas for diesel fuel up to 85%. but it can be said that there is a possibility of improvement in performance.

  • In this paper, we propose a smart transformer for a smart transformer miniature model, which can replace a 60 [Hz] single-phase transformer installed in an electric vehicle. The proposed smart transformer is lighter than a conventional transformer, can control instantaneous voltage, and can be expected to improve power quality through harmonic compensation. The proposed intelligent transformer consists of an incoming part, an AC/DC converter, and a dual active bridge. Only the incoming part and the AC/DC converter are described in this paper. The proposed intelligent transformer has 75 kVA 3.3 kV input and 750 V DC output, which are verified by simulation and experiment.

  • Frequency-multiplication technology based on microwave photonic principles can be used to generate microwave and millimeter wave signals with a wide frequency tuning range. However, the existing cascaded external modulation frequency-tupling scheme needs to ensure the phase coherence of the modulated Radio Frequency (RF) signal, while the phase modulation directly limits the frequency tuning range of the external modulation frequency multiplication. In this paper, a novel approach for generating an incoherent frequency 12-tupling signal with cascade modulation is proposed. The structure of cascaded dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulators can generate a frequency 12-tupling signal. The proposed structure uses no filter or phase control of the RF driving signal. Microwave photonic frequency-tupling was realized under incoherent conditions. Software simulations and experiments validated the proposed structure and proved that it can generate frequency 12-tupling microwave signals under incoherent conditions. Both the frequency range and reliability of the frequency-tupling system has been improved by the proposed structure.

  • As the demand for the detection of special nuclear materials (SNMs) increases, the use of imaging instruments that can sensitively image both gamma-ray and neutron signatures has become necessary. This study compared the pulse shape discrimination (PSD) performance of gamma/neutron events when employing either a pixelated stilbene or a plastic (EJ-276) scintillator array coupled to a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array in a dual-particle imager. The stilbene array allowed a lower energy threshold above which neutron and gamma-ray events can be clearly distinguished. A greater number of events can, therefore, be used when forming both gamma-ray and neutron images, which shortens the time required to acquire the images by nearly seven times.

  • The fusion of the GPS (Global Positioning System) and DR (Dead Reckoning) is widely used for position and latitude estimation of vehicles such as a mobile robot, aerial vehicle and marine vehicle. Among the many types of aerial vehicles, grater focus is given on the quad-rotor and accuracy of the position information is becoming more important. In order to exactly estimate the position information, we propose the fusion method of GPS and Gyroscope sensor using the DEKF (Dual Extended Kalman Filter). The DEKF has an advantage of simultaneously estimating state value and a parameter of dynamical system. It can also be used even if state value is not available. In order to analyze the performance of DEKF, the computer simulation for estimating the position, the velocity and the angle in a circle trajectory of quad-rotor was done. As it can be seen from the simulation results using own proposed DEKF instead of EKF on own fusion method in the navigation of a quad-rotor gave better performance values.

  • This paper proposes a novel exposed-terminal-eliminated medium access control (ETE-MAC) protocol by combining channel reservation, collision avoidance and concurrent transmissions to improve multi-access performance of the multihop wireless networks. Based on the proposed slot scheduling scheme, each node senses the control channel (CCH) or the data channel (DCH) to accurately determine whether it can send or receive the corresponding packets without collisions. Slot reservation on the CCH can be simultaneously executed with data packet transmissions on the DCH. Therefore, it resolves the hidden-terminal type and the exposed-terminal type problems efficiently, and obtains more spatial reuse of channel resources. Concurrent packet transmissions without extra network overheads are maximized. An analytical model combining Markov model and M/G/1 queuing theory is proposed to analyze its performance. The performance comparison between analysis and simulation shows that the analytical model is highly accurate. Finally, simulation results show that, the proposed protocol obviously outperforms the link-directionality-based dual-channel MAC protocol (DCP) and WiFlex in terms of the network throughput and the average packet delay.

  • In this paper, an efficient test algorithm for embedded dual-port memories is presented. The proposed test algorithm can be used to test embedded dual-port memories faster than the conventional multi-port test algorithms and can be used to completely detect stuck-at faults, transition faults and coupling faults which are major target faults in embedded memories. Also, in this work, BIST which performs the proposed memory testing algorithm is designed using Verilog-HDL, and simulation and synthesis for BIST are performed using Cadence Verilog-XL and Synopsys Design-Analyzer. It has been shown that the proposed test algorithm has high efficiency through experiments on various size of embedded memories.

  • This paper propose a bidirectional dc-to-dc converter employing dual inductor for current ripple reduction. Conventional bidirectional dc-to-dc converter uses a single inductor for two different modes; boost and buck; therefore it is difficult to satisfy the optimized inductance value for each mode. To improve this problem, the proposed converter adds two switches, a diode, and one inductor. By proper switching of the additional switch, the proposed converter operates with a inductor in boost mode, but it works with dual inductor in buck mode. Hence in both modes the proposed bidirectional converter can be operated with optimized inductance values. Most of all the optimized inductance in buck mode can reduce the current ripple and its effective value(rms), which are directly related to the temperature increase resulted in short lifetime of battery. To verify the validity of the proposed approach, we first analyzes the operation of the proposed converter theoretically, and implement computer-aided simulations and experiments using a prototype.

  • A dual-band through-the-wall imaging radar receiver for a frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar system was designed and fabricated. The operating frequency bands of the receiver are S-band (2-4 GHz) and X-band (8-12 GHz). If the target is behind a wall, wall-reflected waves are rejected by a reconfigurable $G_m-C$ high-pass filter. The filter is designed using a high-order admittance synthesis method, and consists of transconductor circuits and capacitors. The cutoff frequency of the filter can be tuned by changing the reference current. The receiver system is fabricated on a printed circuit board using commercial devices. Measurements show 44.3 dB gain and 3.7 dB noise figure for the S-band input, and 58 dB gain and 3.02 dB noise figure for the X-band input. The cutoff frequency of the filter can be tuned from 0.7 MHz to 2.4 MHz.
