Syngas/Diesel Dual Fuel Combustion in a Compression Ignition Engine with Different Composition Ratios of Syngas and Compression Ratios (합성가스/디젤 혼소압축착화 엔진의 합성가스 혼합비와 압축비에 따른 연소 및 배출가스 특성)

  • Syngas is widely produced by incomplete combustion of coal, water vapor, and air (oxygen) in a high-temperature/high-pressure gasifier through a coal-gasification process for power generation. In this study, a simulation syngas which was mainly composed of $H_2$, CO, $CO_2$, and $N_2$ was fueled with diesel. A modified single cylinder compression ignition (CI) engine is equipped with intake port syngas supply system and mechanical diesel direct injection system for dual fuel combustion. Combustion and emission characteristics of the engine were investigated by applying various syngas composition ratios and compression ratios. Diesel fuel injection timing was optimized to increase indicated thermal efficiency (ITE) at the engine speed 1,800 rpm and part load net indicated mean effective pressure ($IMEP_{net}$) 2 to 5 bar. ITE of the engine increased with the $H_2$ concentration, compression ratio and engine load. With 45% of $H_2$ concentration, compression ratio 17.1 and $IMEP_{net}$ 5 bar, ITE of 41.5% was achieved, which is equivalent to that of only diesel fuel operation.

  • We must stabilize quickly increasing waste matters in urban life and livestock industry. Biogas including landfill gas and digester gas is byproduct of anaerobic decomposition of organic waste matter and contains 40%-70% methane, which can be used for energy purposes. Utilization of biogas reduce the emission of methane into the atmosphere to minimize greenhouse effect and the carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted when biogas is converted to energy has been taken out of the atmosphere by growing plant. Recently, bioenergy is world-widely noticeable as all contributing to the greenhouse effect. This paper presents development process of a biogas engine for cogeneration system and results of application to digester gas and landfill gas in site. The biogas engine is a dual fuel engine operated on biogas with a diesel pilot. At present, the engine can substitute biogas for diesel fuel up to 85%. but it can be said that there is a possibility of improvement in performance.

  • Small PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cell systems do not require humidification and have great commercialization possibilities. However, methods for controlling small PEM fuel cell stacks have not been clearly established. In this paper, a control method for small PEM fuel cell systems using a dual closed loop with a static feedforward structure is defined and realized using a DSP (Digital Signal Processor). The fundamental elements that need to be controlled in fuel cell systems include the supply of air and hydrogen, water management inside the stack, and heat management of the stack. For small PEM fuel cell stacks operated without a separate humidifier, fans are essential for air supply, heat management, and water management of the stack. A purge valve discharges surplus water from the stack. The proposed method controls the fan using double control loops to quicken transient response of the fan thereby improving the supply rate of air. Feedback control to compensate for the voltage change in fuel cell stack improves the response characteristics in fuel cell to load variations. The feasibility of proposed method was proved by the experiments with a 60W small PEM fuel cell system and operation of a notebook computer using this system.

  • The conventional MOX fuel shows adverse controllability in view of its neutronic characteristics such as decreased soluble boron worth and effective delayed-neutron fraction compared to the UO$_2$ fuel. In order to mitigate these disadvantages, we devised a new concept of the hybrid UO$_2$-MOX fuel pellet with dual structure such that its outer annular section contains. UO$_2$ fuel and its inner cylindrical bar contains MOX fuel. The lattice physics code HELIOS was used to evaluate the neutronic characteristics of three different types of fuel pellets ; UO$_2$ fuel pellet, MOX fuel pellet, and hybrid UO$_2$-MOX fuel pellet. Results show that the hybrid UO$_2$-MOX fuel pellet generally has intermediate neutronic tendency between UO$_2$ fuel and MOX which could diminish the problems arising from the use of the conventional MOX fuel.

  • An experimental study is conducted to investigate the effects of fuel temperature on the spray characteristics of a dual-orifice type swirl injector which is used in gas turbines. The major parameters affecting spray characteristics are fuel temperature and injection pressure entering into the injector. Fuel temperature is shown to have strong influence on the spray characteristics especially at a lower temperature. In this study, fuel temperature is varied from $30^{\circ}C$ to $120^{\circ}C$ and injection pressure is altered from 3 to $7 kg_{f}$ /$cm^{2}$. Two kinds of fuel, which have different surface tension and viscosity, are chosen as an atomizing fluid. As a result, injection instability occurs in the low temperature range due to icing phenomenon and the change of fuel properties. As the injection pressure increases, the kinematic viscosity range for stable atomization becomes wider. The factor controlling the SMD of spray is substantially different depending on the fuel temperature range.

Effect of CNG Heating Value Variations on Emissions Characteristics in a Diesel-CNG Dual-Fuel Engine (CNG 발열량 변화가 Diesel-천연가스 혼소엔진 배기 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • In this paper, purpose of study is emissions characteristics according to effects of heating value variations of CNG fuel in a dual-fuel engine fueled by diesel and natural gas. For heating value variation of CNG fuel, nitrogen gas was mixed with pure CNG fuel. So the higher heating value was changed from $10,400kcal/Nm^3$ to $9,400kcal/Nm^3$. Under one condition of CNG substitution rate was fixed at 80%, diesel fuel was injected at a fixed injection timing of 16 CAD BTDC and fuel pressure was also fixed at 110 MPa. The condition of tested engine was 1800 rpm and 500Nm. Emissions were sampled in exhaust pipe was located at downstream turbocharger. As a result, emissions characteristics were checked in heating value variations of CNG fuel with mixed nitrogen gas THC, $CH_4$ and CO emissions decreased and NOx and $CO_2$ increased.

Starting Transients in Dual-Mode Scramjet Engine (이중 모드 스트램제트 엔진의 시동 천이 과정)

  • A high-resolution numerical study is carried out to investigate the transient process of the combustion and the shock-train developments in an ethylene-fueled direct-connect dual-mode scramjet combustor. Following the fuel injection, air-throttling is applied at the expansion part of the combustor to provide mass addition to block the flow to subsonic speed. The ignition occurs several ms later when the fuel and air are mixed sufficiently. The pressure build up by the combustion leads to the shock train formation in the isolator section that advances to the exit of the intake nozzle. Then, the air-throttling is deactivated and the exhaust process begins and the situation before the air-throttling is restored. Present simulation shows the detailed processes in the dual-mode scramjet combustor for better understanding of the operation regimes and characteristics.

Measurement of Transient Heat Transfer Coefficient of In-cylinder Gas in the Hydrogen Fueled Engine with Dual Injection System (이중분사식 수소기관 연소실내 가스의 순간열전달계수의 측정)

  • To clear the differences of heat transfer coefficient of in-cylinder gas with fuel properties, the transient heat transfer coefficient of hydrogen gas is investigated by using the hydrogen fueled engine. The measured results were also compared with those of gasoline engine and several empirical equations. Transient heat transfer coefficients were determined by measurements of unsteady heat flux and instantaneous wall temperature in the cylinder head. As the main results, it is shown that transient heat transfer coefficients have remarkable differences according to fuel properties, and it's value for hydrogen engine is twice higher than that of gasoline engine. It means that equation of heat transfer coefficient that the effect of fuel properties is considered sufficiently, is needed to analyze or simulate the gas engine performance.
