  • Purpose: Gulbi is a salted and dried yellow corvenia that is popular in Korea. In this study, yellow corvenia was vacuum-dried under two different conditions, average temperatures of $48^{\circ}C$ for 12 and 15 h and $54^{\circ}C$ for 9 and 12 h. Quality characteristics of vacuum-dried Gulbi against fresh corvenia were investigated. Methods: Moisture content, water activity, salt concentration, pH, acidity, volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), and fatty acid composition of Gulbi were evaluated. Results: Moisture contents of fresh corvenia and four types of vacuum-dried Gulbi were 67.37, 31.51, 13.62, 35.17, and 10.05%, respectively. The pH values were in the range of pH 6.70-6.98. The VBN values of Gulbi vacuum-dried at the higher temperature range were greater than those of Gulbi at the lower temperature range. The TBARS of Gulbi increased after vacuum drying (p<0.05). Palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, oleic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid were the main fatty acids of Gulbi. Conclusion: These results indicate that the quality of vacuum-dried Gulbi is dependent on the drying conditions including temperature and time.

  • Dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) is the most widely-used dentifrice abrasive in non-therapeutic tooth-paste requiring, low abrasive level, high stability and excellent compatibility with other formulation ingredients. One of the difficulties encountered in the use of this material in tooth-paste is that unless storage of the product is maintained at a relative low temperature there is a distinct tendency to lose water of crystallization. Another difficulty which has been encountered is that there is a tendency for the product to become lumpy. Various means have been proposed for increasing the stability and overcoming the lumping tendency, most of which means comprise the addition of stabilizing agent. But there is not any report about the relationships between the mechanism of dehydration, physical properties, structure and manufacturing condition. In this experiment, DCPD were manufactured by methods of Moss' patent, its two varied and J.P.VIII, these were studied by means of stability test, IR spectra, and DTA. According to the manufacturing conditions, DCPD has different physical properties and structures, i. e., monoclinic system of low drying temperature, triclinic system of high drying temperature. Dehydration of DCPD may be supposed one step debydration at about $100^{\circ}$ and it finaly converts to ${\gamma}-pyrophosphate$ at about $465^{\circ}$ and if the drying temperature is high it becomes DCP anhydrous. DCPD made by Moss' patent is thought of the best polishing agent of tooth-paste.

  • In a balance experiment with rats either 0, 25 or 50% of the crude protein (CP) provided as casein in the control diet was replaced with cassava leaves (CL) (Manihot esculenta Crantz) or sweet potato vines (SPV) (Ipomoea balala). CL were either sun-dried or oven-dried at $60^{\circ}C$ or $105^{\circ}C$ or ensiled, while the SPY were either sun-dried or ensiled. The experiment included 3 blocks with 30 rats in each and six individuals per treatment group. Drying at $105^{\circ}C$ resulted in a reduction of the lysine (Lys) content, suggestive of the occurrence of Maillard reactions. Ensiling CL and SPV slightly decreased the CP. content as well as the sum of essential amino acids. The apparent fecal CP digestibility (dCP) and nitrogen retention were negatively affected by increasing the level of replacement (p<0.01 and p<0.001, respectively). The impaired amino acid profile observed when drying CL at $105^{\circ}C$ was found to be related to a slight decrease in dCP (p<0.001) as well as N retention (p<0.005). The effects of sun-drying and oven-drying in reducing the HCN content in CL were more potent than when ensiling. By increasing the total dietary HCN supply serum thiocyanide level, as well as urinary thiocyanate and linamarin output, were increased, with a weak relationship between them. Sun-drying and ensiling with cane molasses as additive successfully preserved the nitrogenous constituents and could be a means of preserving fresh green feed under tropical conditions.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the performances for a concurrent flow rice dryer of pilot scale with devices for circulating rice. The pilot scale dryer with the capacity of 700 kg was developed to obtain design informations for the development of actual scale dryer of holding capacity of 10 tons. Three drying tests were conducted at two temperature levels of $100^{\circ}C\;and\;120^{\circ}C$, and two air flow rates levels of $28.5cmm/m^2\;and\;57.1cmm/m^2$. Drying conditions for Test-1, Test-2 and Test-3 were $100^{\circ}C\;-28.5cmm/m^2,\;120^{\circ}C-28.5cmm/m^2\;and\;120^{\circ}-57.1cmm/m^2}$ respectively. Drying rates were 0.73%(w.b./h) for Test-1, 0.90%(w.b./h) for Test-2 and 1.46%(w.b./h) for Test-3. The crack ratios of brown rice after drying ranged from 2.4% to 8.4%, and increased with the increase of drying rate and airflow rate. The energy consumptions were from 6,225 kJ/kg to 6,993 kJ/kg which was higher than that of conventional cross-flow rice circulating type dryer used in Korea. This results were due to the lower ambient air temperatures of $4.5^{\circ}C\;to\;13.4^{\circ}C$ during drying tests.

  • With the continuous increase of energy demand, low-grade coal is regarded as one of new energy sources. However, due to the high water content, the utilization efficiency of low-grade coal is not good to be used in recent conversion plants. Therefore, it requires a drying process to lower the water content in low-grade coals. Although a variety of drying experiments were conducted, drying characteristics in accordance with the pressure change has not been progressed. In this study, the flash drying characteristics of low grade coal with high moisture content (21.5 wt%) were determined in a pressurized micro-riser. The effect of operation conditions such as pressure (1-40 bar), dryer temperature ($200-600^{\circ}C$), and tube length (2-6 m) on drying ratios were investigated.

  • In this study, the quality changes of Hoelen was investigated, which were color differences, browning degrees, total phenolic compounds and electron donating abilities to optimize drying condition using hot air and far infrared drying by changing conditions such as temperatures, air velocities and radiation distances. In color values, ${\Delta}b\;value$ decreased with increasing temperatures, while ${\Delta}L$, ${\Delta}a$ and ${\Delta}E\;value$ increased. The browning degrees showed the similar tendency with the color values. Total phenolic components of Hoelen decreased with increasing drying temperature and air velocity, and decreasing radiation distance. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in the changes of electron donating abilities (EDA) of Hoelen among drying methods and conditions. As a result, the hot air drying was more effective method than the far infrared was.

  • Tire codes are made of materials such as hemp, cotton, rayon, nylon, steel, polyester, glass, and aramid are fiber reinforcement materials that go inside rubber to increase durability, driveability, and stability of vehicle tires. The reinforcement of the tire cord may construct a composite material using tires such as automobiles, trucks, aircraft, bicycles, and fibrous materials such as electric belts and hoses as reinforcement materials. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that the adhesive force between the rubber and the reinforced fiber exhibits the desired physical properties in the rubber composite material made of a rubber matrix with reinforced fibers. This study is a study on the heat treatment conditions for improving the adhesion strength of the tire cord and the reinforced fiber for tires. The core technology of the drying process is a uniform drying technology, which has a great influence on the quality of the reinforcement. Therefore, the uniform airflow distribution is determined by the geometry and operating conditions of the dryer. Therefore, this study carried out a numerical analysis of the shape of a drying nozzle for improving the performance of hot air drying in a dryer used for drying the coated reinforced fibers. In addition, the flow characteristics were examined through numerical analysis of the study on the change in the shape of the chamber affecting drying.

  • In this study, water and organic treatment efficiency and operating characteristics (temperature, salinity effect) were evaluated when food waste with high water content was treated by Bio-dying method. In addition, the optimum conditions for producing pellets for evaluating the decomposition products as SRF(Solid Refuse Fuel) after Bio-drying and evaluating the use value of SRF as a solid fuel were analyzed. As a result, the temperature, $CO_2$ concentration, organic matter removal rate and weight reduction rate according to the daily dose were about 86% and 68% at the input of 2.4 kg/day. The optimal food waste input was estimated to be 2.4 kg/day. As a result of the pellet molding and produce, Pellets can be produced within 10~25% of raw material water content. It was judged that the water content of 25%, which showed the best quality results in terms of external shape maintenance and strength. The high calorific value of SRF of decomposition products after Bio-drying was more than 3,500 kcal/kg.
