  • Electrochemical study on cut edge corrosion of prepainted Zn coated (GI) and 55%Al-Zn coated (GL) steels has been performed in wet-dry cyclic conditions. Maximum width of delaminated polymer coating from the cut edge for GI and GL specimens was evaluated under wet-dry cyclic conditions. The cyclic tests were carried out for 1000 h by changing of relative humidity, where the salt of NaCl was deposited on the specimen every 48 h. The cut edge corrosion test under NaCl deposit indicated that the delamination of the GL specimen progresses at a higher rate than the GI. The electrochemical corrosion monitoring was also performed under condition of alternate exposure to immersion in NaCl solution and drying at 60%RH and $25^{\circ}C$. On the basis of the results of the delamination tests and electrochemical measurements, the mechanism of cut edge corrosion for GI and GL were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the efficient method and guideline of controlling the cracking in bridge deck concrete due to differential drying shrinkage. Drying shrinkage cracking is mainly influenced by the moisture diffusion coefficient that determines moisture diffusion rate inside concrete structures. In addition to the diffusion coefficient, surface coefficient of concrete surface and relative humidity of ambient air simultaneously affect the moisture evaporation from concrete inside to external air outside. Within the framework of cracking shrinkage cracking mechanism, it is necessary to conceive the numerical analysis, which involves these three influencing factors to predict and control the shrinkage cracking of concrete. In this study, moisture diffusion and stress analysis corresponding to drying shrinkage on bridge deck are performed with consideration of diffusion coefficient, surface coefficient, and relative humidity of ambient air. From the numerical results, it is found that cracking behavior due to differential drying shrinkage of bridge deck concrete shows different feature according to three influencing factors and the methodology of controlling of drying shrinkage cracks can be suggested from this study.

  • The shrinkage mechanism of high strength concrete is different from that of normal concrete. The shrinkage of normal concrete is subjected to evaporate moisture in concrete, but most shrinkage in high strength concrete is caused by chemical reaction. To analyze shrinkage of concrete exactly, it is necessary to divide drying shrinkage with autogenous shrinkage in terms of degree of hydration, especially in concrete with low W/C ratio. The proposed method can provide a rational basis for prediction of shrinkage in high strength concrete structure.

  • Hydrogels containing ketoprofen were prepared by adding NaOH or $Ca(OH)_2$ solution to Eudragit L, S and Eudispert hv at various concentration. And xerogels were prepared by drying hydrogels. On the other hand, organogels containing ketoprofen were prepared by mixing Eudragit L or S and propylene glycol. Effects of polymer content and base on drug release were investigated using KP V dissolution method. The release rate of ketoprofen from Eudragit L & S hydrogel decreased with increasing in polymer content. And the drug release rate from cal. hydroxide based gels were more decreased than that from sod. hydroxide based gels. At pH 7.2 dissolution medium, e release of ketoprofen from Edispert hv hydrogel followed apparent zero order kinetics. The release of ketoprofen from xerogel involved in simultaneous absorption of water and desorption of ketoprofen via a pH-dependant swelling controlled mechanism. The release of ketoprofen from Eudragit S organogels followed apparent zero order kinetics, providing strong evidence for a surface erosion mechanism.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the non-gravity fluidized dryer. In this non-gravity fluidized dryer the fluidized zone is produced by two paddles in mixer, which maximizes the surface area of materials and then heated air through the guiding panels dehumidify them. This can conduct the drying process quickly and control moisture contents to lower limits. The ventilation system is closed loop system, which can be changeable to open system, and can be used as a multi-purposed dryer in which mixing, drying, granulating and cooling process is conducted. In order to develop the non-gravity fluidized dryer, in the first fundamental experiments were performed to mixing accuracy and then the other parts of dryer and control system were examined to check whether they were designed properly and operated harmoniously with mixer. Also the preparatory experiments were fulfilled to examine the efficiency and reliability of the dryer. Lastly, on the basis of preparatory experiments, performance test for the non-gravity fluidized dryer carried out for the variation of the initial moisture contents, desired moisture contents, heated air velocity and heating temperature.

  • Green bodies of earthenware tile were prepared from a mixture of earthenware tile powder and SiC as forming agents by applying a conventional process. Granule powder for tile samples was prepared using the spray drying method with commercial earthenware raw material with a quantity of SiC of 0.3 wt%. The applied pressure was $250kg{\cdot}f/m^2$ and the firing temperature was $1050-1200^{\circ}C$. The effects of the SiC particle size and sintering temperature on the open porosity and total porosity were investigated and the correlative mechanism was also discussed. While total porosity was not significantly changed by decreasing the SiC particle size, the open porosity showed a gradual decrease, which represents an increase of the closed porosity. As the sintering temperature increased, coarsening was made among the pores due to excessive oxidation. The volume shrinkage and bending strength were demonstrated for the sintered tile samples. The sintered bulk density was also measured to determine the weight reduction value.

  • Many reseachers have performed extensive studies on the creep and shrinkage of concrete. Mechanism of creep and shrinkage however is not quite well-known, especially for high strength concrete. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the shrinkage and creep characteristics of high strength concrete. The main variables investigated include condition of drying, reinforcement and duraton of load. The effects of drying and reinforcements are clarified and compared with various exsiting models. The present study provides useful data for the design and analysis of high stength concrete structures.

  • Removing residual water in a fuel cell is a critical operational process for managing its performance and controlling its lifetime. Understanding the mechanism of water transport in fuel cells is essential for the design of the water removal process. In this study, an experimental method for measuring the water evaporation rate through a gas diffusion layer, which is a porous medium, under steady-state conditions was developed. Experimental bench tests were conducted to apply the developed method. Then, the effects of various parameters of the drying gas and the gas diffusion layer were experimentally measured. The water evaporation rate increased as the humidity of the drying gas decreased and the flow rate of the drying gas increased. In addition, a thinner gas diffusion layer yielded a higher water evaporation rate.

  • Nanocrystalline spinel lithium manganese oxide ($LiMn_2O_4$) powders with narrow-size-distribution, pure-phase particles, and high crystallinity with an average crystallite size of about 70 nm were synthesized at $600^{\circ}C$ for 6 h in air by freeze drying method. Spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ is also prepared by sol-gel using citric acid as a chelating agent. The influence of different parameters such as pH conditions, solvent, molar ratio of citric acid to total metal ions, calcination temperature, starting material on the structure, morphology and purity of this oxide was investigated. The results of sol-gel method show that pure $LiMn_2O_4$ with average crystallite size of about 130 nm can be produced from nitrate salts as starting materials at $800^{\circ}C$ for 6 h in air. The optimum pH and molar ratio of chelating agent to total metal ions are $4{\leq}pH{\leq}6$ and 1.0, respectively. A possible mechanism on the formation of the nanocrystallines synthesized by sol-gel was also discussed. At the end a comparison of the differences between two methods was made on the basis of x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) tests.
