  • A computer vision system was developed to automatically detect and locate the oyster hinge line, one step in shucking an oyster. The computer vision system consisted of a personal computer, a color frame grabber, a color CCD video camera with a zoom lens, two video monitor, a specially designed fixture to hold the oyster, a lighting system to illuminate the oyster and the system software. The software consisted of a combination of commercially available programs and custom designed programs developed using the Microsoft CTM . Test results showed that the image resolution was the most important variable influencing hinge detection efficiency. Whether or not the trimmed -off-flat-white surface area was dry or wet, the oyster size relative to the image size selected , and the image processing methods used all influenced the hinge locating efficiency. The best computer software and hardware combination used successfully located 97% of the oyster hinge lines tested. This efficienc was achieve using camera field of view of 1.9 by 1.5cm , a 180 by 170 pixel image window, and a dry trimmed -off oyster hinge end surface.

  • Sprout ginseng paste were prepared with pine nut, dry oyster and dry shrimp to examine the antioxidant properties(total polyphenols, total flavonoids, and electron donating ability) and sensory test(attribute difference and acceptance). Sprout ginseng paste were measured based on color value, pH, viscosity, total bacteria cell numbers for 0 and 20 days at $4^{\circ}C$. The higher total polyphenol and total flavonoid content of sprout ginseng paste added with pine nuts, dry oyster, and dry shrimp were higher antioxidant capacity. DPPH radical scavenging activity was increased from 52.2% (SGP0) to 79.5.0 % with SGP5. The attribute test results reveal that the color intensity, bitter taste, and oily taste were decreased in SGP3 to SGP6. Taste, flavor, and coarseness did not show significant difference in SGP0 to SGP6. Thickness and After taste were increased in SGP4 to SGP6. The preference test results reveal that the appearance, flavor, and texture level did not show significant difference in SGP0 to SGP6. Taste and overall preference were increased in SGP4 to SGP6. L value, pH, decrease while a value and b value show no change in sprout ginseng paste with pine nut, dry oyster and dry shrimp. Total cell number was not detected during storage.

  • This paper has dealt with the probability of oyster shell desiccant cooling system driven by renewable energy of photo-volatic effect with fundamental experiment. The test materials for desiccant are activated charcoal, silica-gel, hi-dry, and oyster shell. The experiments were mainly performed with focusing on the observation of surface features, adsorption amounts of the adsorbent species, and the effect of temperature. Oyster shell has sufficient probability for using as desiccant in a air-conditioning system. Moreover, the heat releasing device would be attached in the system, the system based with oyster shell can be operated with high efficiency.

  • COD and sulphide contents in the superficial mud in three oyster farms, one near Gajo-do in Chinhae Bay, the second near Eup-do in Koseong Bay and the third near Eogu in Keoje Bay, around the Chungmu area have been monthly determined for seven months from May through November in 1978. Bottom water was also checked for chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen, COD and sulphide. In general, large amounts of COD and sulphide in the superficial mud were found in the summer season, COD was 38.1 mg/g dry mud in the farm near Gajo-do, 32.3 mg/g near Eup-do and 25.1 mg/g in Eogu farm and sulphide was 0.313 mg/g dry mud, 0.517 mg/g and 0.132 mg/g respectively. COD and sulphide contents in the farms near Gajo-do and Eup-do were a little over the upper level of the eutrophic range, that is, 30 mg/g dry mud in COD and 0.3 mg/g dry mud in sulphide. It shows that the above two oyster farms were already eutrophicated. However, among three oyster farms no clear difference in bottom water was found.

  • Tributyltn, triphenyltin and their degradation products were quantitatively determined in sediments, seawater, and oysters (Crassostrea gigas) collected from Okpo Bay, Korea where a huge shipyard was located. The concentrations of TBT in sediment and oyster were in the range of 5∼2,050 ng/g and 387∼1,190 ng/g (astin on a dry weight basis), respectively. In seawater, it ranged from 19 to 84 ng/ℓ The distribution of TBT compound showed negative gradient from inner to outer bay, which indicates that the shipyard is the point source of TBT contamination in the bay. The contribution of TBT to butyltin concentration in sediment was above 57%. The pattern of TBT distribution was influenced by waterbreak transected the bay. TPhT concentration in oyster ranged from nd (not detected) to 52 ng Sn/g dry wt., whereas that in sediment and seawater was below detection limit. The biological concentration factor (BCF) in oyster was 1.1×10⁴.

  • Oysters are rich in nutrients with good flavor, and disease prevention is required in both the East and the West for high-quality seafood. The best way to store and transport mass-produced oysters is using dry techniques. Using both hot and frozen drying technologies to obtain a perfectly dried oyster often destroys much of the flavor and nutrients found with the oyster meat. This study uses a low temperature vacuum drying technology to investigate the final weight ratio of wild and farmed dried oysters. Additionally, the heat transfer characteristics of steamed oysters are discussed in this paper.

  • To improve the environmental management and resources, in this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of adding oyster shell powder to Hanwoo manure on its characteristics and microbial composition during the storage period. Additives were deposited on top of the manure surface at the rate of 0, 0.5, and 1% of oyster shell powder per 200 g of Hanwoo manure in a plastic container with three replicates; however, untreated manure litter served as the control. Manure characteristics (dry matter, organic matter and crude ash) and microbial composition (lactic acid bacteria, yeast, Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella, and E.coli) were evaluated at day 0, 2, 4, and 8. Manure characteristics exhibited an effect on dry matter, organic matter, and crude ash at day 2 and 8 (p<0.05), and not for day 0 and 4 (p>0.05). With the exception of yeast content at day 4 of storage, lactic acid bacteria, yeast, Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella, and E.coli exhibited no significant differences in all conditions during the storage period. Conclusively, addition of 1% oyster shell powder to Hanwoo manure resulted in slightly better manure characteristics; however, its microbial composition remained unchanged.

  • Dry grinding of a mixture of CaCO$_3$ and Ca(H$_2$PO$_4$)$_2$.$H_2O$ was conducted using a planetary ball mill in order to investigate solid state reaction for a synthesis of hydroxyapatite(Ca$_{10}$(PO$_4$)$_{6}$(OH)$_2$, HAp) through mechanochemical treatment method. The raw materials, which are composed of waste oyster and calcium biphosphate Ca(H$_2$PO$_4$)$_2$.$H_2O$, were mixed and then treated mechanochemically. The synthesis of hydroxyapatite(Ca$_{10}$(PO$_4$)$_{6}$(OH)$_2$, HAp) from the mixture was almost completed by about 60 minute grinding. The formation of HAp monophase in the ground mixture was characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Moreover, the formation of HAp monophase depending on the grinding time was improved by increasing the grinding time.ime.ime.

  • Bottom Ash is industrial by-product from a thermoelectric power plant. An immense quantities of bottom ash have increased each year, but most of them is reclaimed in ash landfill. In this study, in order to raise recycling rate of Bottom Ash, it is suggested to cure Bottom Ash (BA) mixtures mixed with cement, lime, Fly Ash (FA), and oyster shell (OS). Mixtures of 5~20 % mixing ratio had been cured for 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days using sealed curing and air-dry curing method. Unconfined compressive strength test was conducted to determine strength and deformation modulus ($E_{50}$) change for mixtures as mixing ratio and curing day, water contents of mixtures were measured after test. As a result, strength and $E_{50}$ were increased as mixing ratio and curing days, but values and tendencies of them appeared in different as kind of mixture, mixing ratio, curing method, and curing days. The results showed the addition of cement, lime, Fly Ash, and oyster soil in Bottom Ash could improved strength and $E_{50}$ and enlarge its field of being used.
