  • Solid hydrated by hydro-thermal synthesis reaction is cured two times, the first curing is the steam curing at atmospheric pressure and the second one is a high-pressure steam curing, that is autoclaving. Steam curing is to acquire the proper strength for the resistance of treatment in the first curing process, it was not evaluated properly so far. Because of ignorance about curing, some engineers even think that the dry curing is better than the steam curing. The relation between compressive strength of solid hydrated by hydrothermal synthesis reaction and curing condition are presented in this paper. In order to investigate the effect of curing on the strength properties of specimen, the hydration behavior of solid hydrated by hydro-thermal synthesis reaction has been studied over curing condition using XRD, DT-TGA and porosimeter, SEM analysis technique. The results show that the specimens which are cured with blended method of dry and steam curing appear to have better strength properties than that of dry curing and steam curing. Also, there are significant difference of hydration behavior among curing condition in the solid hydrated by hydro-thermal synthesis reaction.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of pretreatments and storage conditions on quality and vase life of cut 'Red Sandra' rose (Rosa hybrida L.). 'Red Sandra' rose flowers were harvested and pulsed with distilled water, 0.2% RVB or 200ppm aluminum sulfate+3% sucrose+50ppm $AgNO_3$+0.1mM ethionine for 22 hours and then stored in wet or dry condition for 12, 24, 48 hours at low or room temperature. Pulsing with aluminum sulfate+sucrose+$AgNO_3$+ethionine delayed bent-neck, increased solution absorption and flower diameter, and prolonged vase life rather than pulsing with distilled water or RVB. Storage in wet condition or low temperature also delayed bent-neck, increased solution absorption and flower diameter, and prolonged vase life compared with storage in dry or room temperature condition. As the storage hours prolonged, solution absorption, flower diameter, and vase life were decreased especially pulsing with distilled water. Pulsing with aluminum sulfate+sucrose+$AgNO_3$+ethionine prolonged vase life compared to pulsing with distilled water or RVB regardless of storage conditions and shipping hours.

  • This study was aimed not only to develop the gill net and trap made of biodegradable monofilaments in order to prevent a ghost fishing and to protect marine ecosystem, but also to analyze their spinning process and physical properties. Results showed that the spinning speed of biodegradable polybutylene succinate(PBS) monofilament was estimated to be approximately 100m/min when spinning temperature and cooling water temperature were adjusted at $180^{\circ}C$ and $3^{\circ}C$, respectively. The breaking loads of PBS monofilaments were estimated to be $35.3kg/mm^2$ at ${\phi}0.2mm$, $46.5kg/mm^2$ at ${\phi}0.3mm$, and $49.7kg/mm^2$ at ${\phi}0.4mm$ in the dry condition, respectively. However, its breaking loads in the wet condition were reduced by 2.4-5.5%, compared to those in the dry condition. The knotted strength of PBS monofilament at ${\phi}0.2mm$ was estimated to be 98.6% of PE in the dry condition. The breaking load of PBS monofilament at ${\phi}0.3mm$ was evaluated to be 81.8% of PA, and its softness showed 3 times less than that of PA in the wet condition. The breaking load of PBS monofilament at ${\phi}0.4mm$ was 95.3% of PA, and its softness showed 1.6 times less than that of PA in the wet state. However, the load elastic elongations of two kinds of monofilaments were estimated to be 1% higher than that of PA.

  • This study was conducted to examine the dry matter production and leaf photosynthesis under different fertilizer application in Yacon(Polymnia sonchifolia)plants. Under field conditions, dry matter production of stable mature application plot(S-1) was much larger than non-treated control plot(CTL), but bulb dry weight of 10kg nitrogen application plot per 10a (N-10) was not differentiated from CTL. The maximum photosynthetic rates increased in Yacon plants grown at S-1 while in the rates of CTL reduced under glasshouse in the same treated pot condition. The optimum temperature for the highly photosynthetic rates is about $34{\pm}3^{\circ}C$, and the rates did decrease by stomatal resistance below 28℃. The estimated light saturation point was $1200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}s^1$. The results of this study indicate that soil conditions were highly related to dry matter production and leaf photosynthesis rate in Yacon plants.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate comfort functions while wearing firefighters' protective gloves in dry and wet conditions at $70^{\circ}C$ air temperature with radiant heat. Four types of firefighting gloves from Korea, Germany, United States, and Japan were evaluated in both dry and wet conditions by eight male firefighters. Firefighters put their hands and forearms wearing gloves into a hands-radiant chamber that maintained at an air temperature of $70{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ ($T_a$) and globe temperature $106^{\circ}C$ ($T_g$). During the exposure, subjects followed a fixed protocol of manual movements and stopped the exposure when they felt being intolerable. Results showed that completion time was extended by 6 min on average when gloves got wet and 15 min for the Japanese gloves was extended when compared to its dry condition (p<.001); microclimate humidity on the palm at the last stage was greater for wet conditions than dry conditions in the all gloves; and skin temperatures on mid-fingertip, palm, and hand were significantly lower for wet conditions than dry conditions especially for Japanese gloves (p<.001). These results indicate that the exposure time without thermal pain to radiant heat could be extended by wetting gloves during the low radiant heat exposure.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand a relation of water content measurement with two different method, water removal method and dry method. Methods: 72 hydrogel contact lens containing various water content (ranged from 47% to 58%) were measured by the gravimetric method at 20$^{\circ}C$and 21% of the humidity. We weighed the dried test specimen at room temperature for 30 min after cooling. Results: In dry blotting method, the water content was measured to 47.43${\pm}$8.48%. The water contents was measured to 48.15${\pm}$8.36% with wet blotting condition. It was found that wet blotting method showed the higher water content of about 7% than dry blotting method. In water content with two dry methods, each of results was measured by 47.89${\pm}$8.06% and 49.56${\pm}$7.06%. In case of microwave method, the water content was measured significantly higher water content of about 1.67% than vacuum oven method. However, no statistical difference was found (p>0.05). Conclusions: In water removal method (Dry blotting method and Wet blotting method) to weigh hydrated test specimen, wet blotting method showed significantly higher water content than dry blotting method. Also in case of dry methods (vacuum oven and microwave) to weigh dry test specimen, water content of microwave method showed higher water content than vacuum oven method, but it should be noted that microwave oven method must be used carefully to measure accurateness on the specimen position and wave power.

  • Deodorization characteristics and removal rate of sulfur-containing odor have been investigated in the soil filter reactors packed with montmorillonites (Mont.), rice hulls(Rh.), and thickening-activated sludge(Ts.). And variation of pH and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ with the removal of malodorous sulfur compounds have been investigated together. As compared removal rate of montmorillonites between wet and dry condition for sulfur compounds through batch test, it showed that wet condition was better than dry one; removal ratio, as wet/dry, was $H_2S$ of 1.2 and $CH_3SH$ of 1.9, and decrease of pH and increase of $SO_4{^{2-}}$ concentration in the wet condition also showed to be larger than in dry condition. In continuous test for biological deodorization experiment, removal rate of sulfur compounds in reactor packed with Mont., Rh. and Ts, was more than 98 %, and the variation of static pressure was maintained stably under condition of SV $150h^{-1}$, LV 4.2 mm/sec and SV $200h^{-1}$, LV 5.6 mm/sec, and in reactor packed with Mont. and Rh., $H_2S$ was 76.4 % to 87.2 % and $CH_3SH$ was 87.8 % to 93.3 % under the same condition. From above results, it ascertained that it can obtain the high deodorization efficiency by inoculating thickening-activated sludge in soil filter using montmorillonites.

  • The objective of this study was to estimate physical properties and fishing performances of net twine with improved PBS copolymer resin (Bio-new), the existing PBS/PBAT blending resin (Bio-old) and commercial Nylon (Nylon). The tensile strength of Bio-new monofilament was equal to Bio-old and the elongation of Bio-new was about 6 % higher than that of Bio-old in wet condition. The physical properties tests were carried out to estimate breaking load and stiffness in dry and wet conditions, respectively. In the results, the breaking load of Nylon netting was the highest whereas the elongation of Bio-new was 1.4 times higher than that of Nylon netting in wet condition. The breaking load of Bio-old netting was about 9.2 % higher than that of Bio-new netting. However, the elongation of the Bio-new netting was about 3% higher than that of Bio-old. The stiffness of the Bio-new compared to Bio-old was improved about 34 % in dry condition and about 32 % in wet condition. The filed experiments of the fishing performance were conducted with three kinds of drift nets with different netting materials in the coastal sea of Jeju. The each experimental drift net made of different materials showed the similar fishing performance. Bio-old drift net yielded less catches of small sized yellow croaker than other drift nets. The netting materials affected the fishing performance and length distribution of catches in the drift nets.

  • This study examined the material properties of MDF manufactured using acetylated pinus radiata fibers against moisture and compared the properties with the fiberboard quality standards of KS F 3200. Since acetylated MDF shows very low moisture content, water absorption and thickness swelling than the quality standards, it is expected to have an excellent dimensional stability. The bending strength in wetting condition of the acetylated MDF reached approximately 70% of the bending strength in dry condition, making it suitable for the quality standards. The internal bond of the acetylated MDF in the wetting condition was higher than the minimum internal bond of the quality standards in the dry condition, showing a good water resistance. Since the water droplet contact angle of the acetylated MDF is larger than that of untreated MDF, it is determined that it contributes in improving the water resistance due to the low wettability.
