Two consecutive green house experiments were carried out to examine the effect of Azospirillum spp. inoculation on growth, nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation in maize plants grown in pots. There were eight treatments including an uninoculated control and Azospirillum strains OAD-3, OAD-9, AZ-22, AZ-8, AZ-9, Azospirillum brasilense BR-11001 and Azospirillum lipoferum BR-11080. The inoculated plants showed higher values in each of the following measurements; plant height, total dry mass and nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation in shoot when compared to the uninoculated control plants in two consecutive experiments conducted in the same soil. Among Azospirillum strains, Azospirillum sp. OAD-3 inoculated plants showed higher nitrogen accumulation by 44.5% and 45.1%, total dry mass by 48.6% and 66.9% in two consecutive experiments respectively. The nitrogen concentration in the maize plants was not changed significantly in the first experiment, however it increased significantly in the second experiment due to Azospirillum inoculation. In addition, Azospirillum sp. OAD-9 and A. brasilense BR-11001 also proved to be effective with respect to total dry mass, total nitrogen accumulation and total phosphorus accumulation. The nitrogen concentrations in maize plants were increased in the second experiment due to Azospirillum inoculation.
Red-bed soft rock is a common stratum and it is necessary to evaluate the mechanical properties and bearing capacity of red-bed soft rock mass affected by different environmental effects. This paper presents a complete procedure for evaluating the bearing capacity of red-bed soft rock by means of geophysical exploration and in-situ rock mechanics tests. Firstly, the thickness of surface loosened rock mass of red-bed soft rock was determined using geophysical prospecting method. Then, three environmental effects, including natural weathering effect, dry-wet cycling effect and concrete sealing effect, were considered. After each effect lasted for three months, in-situ rock mass mechanical tests were conducted. The test results show that the mechanical properties of rock mass considering the sealing effect of concrete were maintained. After considering the natural weathering effect, the mechanical parameters decrease to a certain extent. After considering the effect of dry-wet cycling, the decreases of mechanical parameters are the most significant. The test results confirm that the red-bed soft rock dam foundation rock mass will be significantly affected by various environmental effects. Therefore, combined with the mechanical test results, some useful implementations are proposed for the construction of a red-bed soft rock dam foundation.

High strength concretes utilizing EVA with micro particles were prepared by varying polymer/binder mass ratio and curing conditions with a constant water/binder mass ratio of 0.3. The EVA modified concretes on the compressive and flexural strength, microstructure, ultrapulse modulus in curing condition(dry and water curing) were studied. Also, scanning electron microscope analysis(SEM) was performed to reveal the presence of polymer film and cement hydrates in the concrete. The compressive strength of the EVA modified concretes cured at water conditions ere higher than that of the EVA modified concretes cured at dry conditions. But, the flexural strength of the specimens cured at dry conditions were higher than that of the specimens cured at water conditions. Due to the interaction of the cement hydrates and polymer film, an interpenetrating network originated in which the aggregates were embedded. The curing of the polymer modified concrete involves two step of cement hydrates and polymer modification, and cement hydrates was promoted in water conditions and polymer film formation take place when water evaporates and was thereby was favored in dry conditions. By SEM analysis, influences of polymer modification was strengthening of the transition zone between the aggregate and the paste, and the porosity of transition zone decreases. By spring analysis, it could known that polymer film affects in porosity decrease and strengthening of transition zone.

In order to minimize compression power and analyze the cause of exergy loss for a dry ice production cycle with 3-stage compression, the variation of compression power was investigated and the exergy analysis was peformed for the cycle. In this cycle, $CO_2$, is used both as a refrigerant and as a raw material for dry ice. The behavior of compression power and irreversibility in the cycle were examined as a function of intermediate pressure. From this result, the conditions for the minimum compression power were obtained in terms of the first stage or the third stage pressure. In addition, the irreversibilities for the cycle were investigated with respect to the efficiency of compressor. Result shows that the optimum pressure is not consistent with the conventional pressure obtained from the equal-pressure-ratio assumption. This is mainly due to the change in mass flow rate of the intermediate stage compressor by the flash gas evaporation from the flash drums. Most important is that the present exergy analysis enabled us to find bad performance components for the cycle and informed us of methods to improve the cycle performance.
Background: Nutrient release during litter decomposition was investigated in Vitex doniana, Terminalia avecinioides, Sarcocephallus latifolius, and Parinari curatellifolius in Makurdi, Benue State Nigeria (January 10 to March 10 and from June 10 to August 10, 2016). Leaf decomposition was measured as loss in mass of litter over time using the decay model Wt/W0 = e-kd t, while $Kd=-{\frac{1}{t}}In({\frac{Wt}{W0}})$ was used to evaluate decomposition rate. Time taken for half of litter to decompose was measured using T50 = ln 2/k; while nutrient accumulation index was evaluated as $NAI=(\frac{{\omega}t\;Xt}{{\omega}oXo})$. Results: Average mass of litter remaining after exposure ranged from 96.15 g, (V. doniana) to 78.11 g, (S. lafolius) in dry (November to March) and wet (April to October) seasons. Decomposition rate was averagely faster in the wet season (0.0030) than in the dry season (0.0022) with P. curatellifolius (0.0028) and T. avecinioides (0.0039) having the fastest decomposition rates in dry and wet seasons. Mean residence time (days) ranged from 929 to 356, while the time (days) for half the original mass to decompose ranged from 622 to 201 (dry and wet seasons). ANOVA revealed highly significant differences (p < 0.01) in decomposition rates and exposure time (days) and a significant interaction (p < 0.05) between species and exposure time in both seasons. Conclusion: Slow decomposition in the plant leaves implied carbon retention in the ecosystem and slow release of CO2 back to the atmosphere, while nitrogen was mineralized in both seasons. The plants therefore showed effectiveness in nutrient cycling and support productivity in the ecosystem.
The mass density of the medium (ρ) used to calculate the maximum shear modulus (Gmax) of the saturated ground based on the shear wave velocity is unclear. Therefore, to determine the mass density, a verification formula and five scenarios were established. Laboratory tests were conducted, and the obtained results were compared. The mass density of the medium was assumed to be saturated (ρsat), wet (ρt), dry (ρdry), and submerged conditions (ρsub), and the Vs ratios of saturated to dry condition were obtained from each case. Assuming the saturated density (ρsat), the Vs ratio was consistent with the value from the resonant column test (RCT) results, and the value from the bender element test results was consistent with the wet density assumption (ρt). Considering the frequency range of earthquakes, it is concluded that applying the saturated density (ρsat) is reasonable as in the RCT results.

Mass and elemental dry deposition fluxes and ambient particle size distributions were measured using dry deposition plates, a cascade impactor. and a CPS(Coarse Particle Sampler), from July to November 1998 in Seoul. Korea. Primarily anthropogenic elemental fluxes (Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) were on average one to two orders of magnitude lower than primarily crustal elements (Al, Ca). Complete total and elemental particle size distributions showed trimodal size distributions due to the peak in particles larger than $10{\mu}m$ in diameter. A multi-step model and the Sehmel-Hodgson model were used to calculate total and cumulative deposition fluxes. The result indicated that dry deposition fluxes were extremely sensitive to the mass of particles larger than $10{\mu}m$ in diameter due to their high dry deposition velocities. The result showed that particles larger than $10{\mu}m$ in diameter dominated atmospheric dry deposition. The modeled fluxes calculated using the measured atmospheric particle size distributions and modeled deposition velocities were compared to measured ones. In general, the measured mass and elemental fluxes agreed well with the modeled ones.

Two successive in vitro experiments were carried out to examine the effect of MPS bacterial inoculation on growth, and nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation of maize plants under greenhouse condition in the same soil. There were four treatments, uninoculated control and three phosphate solubilizing bacterial inoculations, viz., Pseudomonas striata, Burkholderia cepacia and Serratia marcescens. The inoculated plants showed the higher plant height, total dry mass, nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation when compared to uninoculated control plants in both experiments. In the combined data analysis from two experiments, the plants inoculated with P. striata and B. cepacia showed significantly higher plant height, total dry mass and P accumulation when compared to S. marcescens inoculated plant and uninoculated control plants. The P. striata and B. cepacia inoculation enhanced total dry matter accumulation by 14% and phosphorus accumulation by 25% over the uninoculated control plants. The nitrogen and phosphorus concentration of maize plants were also increased due to MPS bacterial inoculation, however, the effect was not significant.

Four different data reduction methods for the heat transfer coefficients from experimental data under dehumidifying conditions are compared. The four methods consist of two heat and mass transfer models and two fin efficiency models. Data are obtained from two heat exchanger samples having plain fins or wave fins. Comparison of the reduced heat transfer coefficients revealed that the single potential heat and mass transfer model yielded the humidity-independent heat transfer coefficients. Two fin efficiency models-enthalpy model and humidity model-yielded approximately the same fin efficiencies, and accordingly approximately the same heat transfer coefficients. The heat transfer coefficients under wet conditions were approximately the same as those of the dry conditions for the plain fin configuration. For the wave fin configuration, however, wet surface heat transfer coefficients were approximately 12% higher. The pressure drops of the wet surface were 10% to 45% larger than those of the dry surface.

Gravimetric method is usually used to evaluate air-dry density, which is governing physical or mechanical properties of wood. Although it had high evaluation accuracy, the method is time consuming process. Thus, this study was conducted to estimate air-dry density of wood with high accuracy by using polychromatic X-ray and digital detector as alternative of gravimetric method. To quantify polychromatic X-ray projection for evaluating air-dry density, Lambert-Beer's law with the integral value of probability function was used. The integral value was used as weighting factor in the law, and it was determined by conducting simple test at various penetration depths and tube voltage. Mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) of wood also calculated by investigating polychromatic X-ray projection according to species, penetration depth and tube voltage. The species had not an effect on change of MAC. Finally, an air-dry density of wood was estimated by applying the integral value, MAC and Lambert-Beer's law to polychromatic X-ray projection. As an example, the relation of the integral value (${\alpha}$) according to penetration depth (t, cm) at tube voltage of 35 kV was ${\alpha}=-0.00091t{\times}0.0184$ while the regression of the MAC (${\mu}$, $cm^2/g$) was ${\mu}=0.5414{\exp}(-0.0734t)$. When calculation of root mean squared error (RMSE) was performed to check the estimation accuracy, RMSE at 35, 45 and 55 kV was 0.010, 0.013 and $0.009g/cm^3$, respectively. However, partial RMSE in relation to air-dry density was varied according to tube voltage. The partial RMSE below air-dry density of $0.41g/cm^3$ was $0.008g/cm^3$ when tube voltage of 35 kV was used. Meanwhile, the partial RMSE above air-dry density of $0.41g/cm^3$ decreased as tube voltage increased. It was conclude that the accuracy of estimation with polychromatic X-ray and digital detector was quite high if the integral value and MAC of wood were determined precisely or a condition of examination was chosen properly. It was seemed that the estimation of air-dry density by using polychromatic X-ray system can supplant the gravimetric method.
