Experimental and analytical studies are presented to characterize the break-up mechanism and atomization processes of the intermittent- impinging-type nozzle. Gasoline jets passing through the circular nozzle with the outlet diameter of 0.4mm and the injection duration of 10ms are impinged on each other. The impingement of fuel jets forms a thin liquid sheet, and the break-up of the liquid sheet produces liquid ligaments and droplets subsequently. The shape of liquid sheets was visualized at various impinging velocities and angles using the planer laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) technique. Based on the Kelvin-Helmholtz wave instability theory, the break-up length of liquid sheets and the droplet diameter are obtained by the theoretical analysis of the sheet disintegration. The mean diameter of droplet is also estimated analytically using the liquid sheet thickness at the edge and the wavelength of the fastest growing wave. The present results indicate that the theoretical results are favorably agreed with the experimental results. The size of droplets decreases after the impingement as the impinging angle or the injection pressure increase. The increment of the injection pressure is more effective than the increment of the impinging angle to reduce the size of droplets.
In this study, the emulsion dispersion stability of optimizing storage temperature was investigated. The system was based on oil/water (O/W) emulsions. In order to evaluate the stability, mean diameter of droplet was measured as a function of temperature with various mixed hydrophilic lipophilic balance (HLB). In addition, the correlations between phase inversion temperature (PIT) and the optimum storage temperature were probed. In this system, majority of the smallest droplet was shown at temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ below PIT. Whether the temperature was increased or decreased from the optimum, size of the droplet increased. According to the mixed HLB, the particle size and optimum storage temperature were also affected. As the concentrations of surfactant were increased, the size of particle decreased with lower optimum temperature for storage. If the surfactant (4 wt%) were mixed with HLB, the optimum storage temperature was $21^{\circ}C$ for maintaining the size of smallest droplet at 108.3 nm in diameter. At above optimum condition, increased size of particle was observed approximately 4 % increases from 108.2 nm to 112.3 nm after 600 hours. The size of particle in emulsion was maintained stably without any considerable effect of Ostwald ripening phenomena at the optimum storage temperature with low polydispersity index.

Carbon dioxide ocean disposal is one of the promising options to reduce carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere because the ocean has vast capacity for carbon dioxide sequestration. However, the dissolution rate of liquid carbon dioxide in seawater must be known in advance in order to estimate the amount of carbon dioxide sequestration in the ocean. Therefore, in the present study, calculations of the solubility, the surface concentration and the dissolution behavior of carbon dioxide when liquid carbon dioxide is released at 1,000m and 1,500m in depth are peformed. The results show that the droplet is completely dissolved below 500 m in depth if the carbon dioxide droplet is released both at 1,000m in depth with the initial droplet diameter of 0.011m or less and at 1,500m in depth with the diameter of 0.016 or less. Also, the surface concentration of carbon dioxide droplet with the hydrate film is about 50% of carbon dioxide solubility at 1,500 m in depth and about 60% of carbon dioxide solubility at 1,000 m in depth.

The spray plume characteristics of liquid water jet injected into subsonic cross-flow at 42 m/s were experimentally investigated. Nozzle has a 1.0 m diameter and L/D=5. Droplet sizes, velocities, volume flux were measured at each downstream area of the injector exit using phase Doppler particle anemometry. Measuring probe position is moved with 3-way transversing machine. Experimental results indicate that SMD is varied from 75 to $120{\mu}m$ distribution and it is uncertain layer structure. SMD peaks at the top of the spray plume. This phenomenon is related to the momentum exchange between column waves and cross-flow stream. Droplet vector velocities were varied from 11.5 to 33 m/s. A higher-velocity region can be identified in down edge region at Z/D : 40, 70 and 100. Lower-velocity region were observed on bottom position of the spray plume. Volume flux is a criterion to the droplet concentration. All volume flux distribution has a same structure that continuously decreases from the center region to the edge of the plume. Z/D : 20 is spatially less concentrated than in Z/D : 100.
The purpose of this study is to measure the droplet distribution and Sauter mean diameter(SMD) of biodiesel fuel, using the immersion sampling method. This method involves using an optical microscope and a CCD camera, to take an image of the droplets. These images are then measured by using a 'Sigma Scan' processing program. The results of the above experiment are summarized as followed ; (1) There can be as much as a 10% error rate when measuring the diameter of these droplets, using the image processing method and the naked eye. (2) The result of droplet size distribution test, TVO(transesterified vegetable oil) big size droplet distribution were increased at ambient pressure $6kg/cm^2$. (3) When ambient pressure increased $6kg/cm^2$ above, SMD variation of TVO and UVO(used vegetable oil) 30 are small. (4) On Rosin-Rammler analysis, droplets size distribution of UVO(used vegetable oil) 30 uniform more than TVO 20 on ambient pressure $1kg/cm^2$.
Droplet distribution of LCP(Vectra 950) and PET blend by repeated extrusion was examined through morphology analysis. Repeated extrusion was respectively proceeded twice and three times with blending condition and droplet distribution of only once extrusion sample showed uniform shape. However, droplet size of twice and three times extrusion samples increased and it was confirmed that droplets were concentrated on the center of specimens. It is thought that this phenomena were due to the compatibility and viscoelastic behavior of LCP/PET blend. Finally, it is thought that fiber manufacturing of different diameter is possible from spinning of repeated extrusion LCP/PET blended chip under same spinning condition.

This paper presents experimental data on water droplet breakup in high-speed air flows. Exact-time-dependent evolution of wave and droplet interaction as well as breakup processes were optically visualized using a shadowgraph technique. Droplet experiments were conducted in a shock tube. Five flow conditions were used with an incident shock wave Mach number from 1.40 to 2.19 with Weber number based on the droplet initial diameter from 2300 to 38000, respectively. This corresponds to post-shock flow speeds varying from subsonic to supersonic. The considered droplet diameters were 2.0 mm to 3.6 mm. Some interesting wave patterns in the near wake were found. The present data shows that with an increase in the Weber number the droplet acceleration coefficient decreases and the level of decrease was weaker for the case of higher Mach numbers. This state of affair is different to the existing data in literature. Possible reasons are discussed.

The two-dimensional, unsteady, laminar conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and species transport in the gas phase and mass, momentum and energy in the liquid phase are solved simultaneously in spherical coordinates in order to study heating and vaporization of a droplet entrained in the oscillating flow. The numerical solution gives the velocity and temperature distribution in both gas and liquid phase as a function of time. When the gas flow oscillates around an vaporizing droplet, the liquid flow circulates in the clockwise or counterclockwise direction and the temperature distribution in the liquid phase changes its shapes, depending on the gas fow direction. When the gas flow changes its direction of circulating liquid flow is opposite to the gas flow, forming two vortex circulating in the opposite direction. During the heating period, the difference in the maximum and minimum temperature is large, followed by the almost uniform temperature slightly below the boiling temperature. The mass and heat transfer from the droplet depend on the droplet temperature, droplet diameter and the magnitude of relative velocity, giving the droplet lifetime different from the d$^{2}$-law.
This study represents an assessment of the phase-Doppler technique to the measurements of dense droplet laden jet. High-pressure injection fuel sprays have been investigated to evaluate the use of the Phase-Doppler anemometry (PDA) technique. The critical issue is the stability of the phase-Doppler anemometry technique for dense droplet laden jet such as Diesel fuel spray in order to insure the results from the drop size and velocity measurements are repeatable, consistent, and physically realistic because the validation rate of experimental data is very low due to the thick optical density. The effect of shift frequency is minor, however, the photomultiplier tube (PMT) voltage setting is very sensitive to the data acquisition and noise in dense droplet laden jet. The optimum PMT voltage and shift frequency should be chosen so that the data such as volume flux and drop diameter do not change rapidly.
An experimental study on the behavior of droplets impinging on a solid flat surface was carried out in the present study. Breakup of a liquid droplet impinging on a solid surface has been investigated experimentally for various fuels with different properties. The fuel temperature and incident angle were chosen as major parameters. And fuel temperature and incident angle varied in the range from $-20^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$ and from $30^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$, respectively, were investigated. It was found that the variation of fuel temperature influences upon droplet mean diameter which were bounced out from the solid surface. As the increases of incident angle, the break-out mass flow rate increases. This causes the decrease of liquid film flow rate. The larger incident angle gives less liquid film flow rate.
