Analysis of Unstable Droplet Behavior of Liquid Rocket Engine (액체로켓엔진의 불안정 액적 거동의 해석)

  • For the analysis of combustion instabilities of a liquid locket engine, a simple spray combustion model has been analyzed by the Euler-Lagrange method. Gas temperature, droplet trajectory, and droplet radius have been evaluated on 2-D axisymmetric coordinates. The Euler-Lagrange method has been shown to have a good tendency of gas temperature distribution as well as droplet trajectory and radius change.

  • Combustion of liquid-fuelled combustion in a high-temperature vitiated-air stream was studied. The mathematical formulation comprise the application of Eulerian conservation equation to the gas phase and Lagrangian equation of droplet motion. The latter is coupled with a droplet-tracking technique (PSI-CELL Model) which regard the droplet phase as a source of mass, momentum, and energy to the gaseous phase. Reaction rate is determined by taking into account the Arrhenius reaction rate based on a single-step reaction mechanism. The calculated profiles show somewhat uncertainess at the upstream, but bases data for designing the combustor followed by 2-phase flow were obtained.

Droplet transient migration and dynamic force balance mechanism on vibration-controlled micro-texture surfaces

  • In this paper, forced vibration was used to regulate the droplet migration, fully recording the transient migration of droplets on a micro-textured substrate under the resonance frequency by a high-speed camera. The influence of resonance frequency and dynamic migration characteristics of droplets on the solid micro-texture surface under lateral vibration were researched. The experiment demonstrates that the driving force is caused by the difference between the left and right contact angles made the droplet oscillate and migrate, and as time t increases, the left and right contact points are periodically shifted and the amplitude of migration increases. Therefore, based on the droplet migration behavior and its force balance mechanism, a spring vibration model of migration behavior of the vibrating droplet micro unit was set up to predict the complete trajectory of its migration on a solid surface. The calculation results show that the theoretical displacement is less than the experimental displacement, and the longer the time, the larger the difference. Affected by the vibration, part of the droplet permeates through the micro-texture, resulting in the droplet losing height and the contact angle becoming smaller as well. While the other part of droplet overcomes the internal surface tension to migrate.

A Study on the Flow Characteristics of Gasoline Spray across the Suction Air Stream (흡입공기분류를 가로지르는 가솔린 분무의 유동 특성 연구)

  • When a fuel was injected with opening the intake valve of a port fuel injection engine, the spray atomization and flow characteristics in the intake port have a strong influence on the mixture formation of a combustion chamber. Thus , this study was to clarify the spray flow characteristics of the air-assist gasoline spray with fine dropkets across the suction air stream in model intake port. For the simulated opening intake valve in port, suction air stream was varied to 10m/s ∼30m/s. And fuel pressur ewas fixed to 300kPa, but air assist pressure was varied to 0∼25kPa for a vairable spray conditions. Spray flow trajectory was investigated by means of laser sheet visualization and the measurements of droplet sizes and velocities were made by PDPA system. Measured droplets within the spray flow field were subdivided into five size groups and then, the flow characteristics of droplet size groups were investigated to the spray across a suction air stream.

Computations of Droplet Impingement on Airfoils in Two-Phase Flow

  • The aerodynamic effects of leading-edge accretion can raise important safety concerns since the formulation of ice causes severe degradation in aerodynamic performance as compared with the clean airfoil. The objective of this study is to develop a numerical simulation strategy for predicting the particle trajectory around an MS-0317 airfoil in the test section of the NASA Glenn Icing Research Tunnel and to investigate the impingement characteristics of droplets on the airfoil surface. In particular, predictions of the mean velocity and turbulence diffusion using turbulent flow solver and Continuous Random Walk method were desired throughout this flow domain in order to investigate droplet dispersion. The collection efficiency distributions over the airfoil surface in simulations with different numbers of droplets, various integration time-steps and particle sizes were compared with experimental data. The large droplet impingement data indicated the trends in impingement characteristics with respect to particle size ; the maximum collection efficiency located at the upper surface near the leading edge, and the maximum value and total collection efficiency were increased as the particle size was increased. The extent of the area impinged on by particles also increased with the increment of the particle size, which is similar as compared with experimental data.

  • This paper presents a mathematical model predicting the temperature distribution in rotating GMA welding. The bead width increases with rotation frequency at the same rotation diameter because the molten droplets are deflected by centrifugal force. The numerical solution is obtained by solving the transient three-dimensional heat conduction equation considering the heat input from the welding arc, cathode heating and molten droplets. Generally in GMA welding the heat input may be assumed as a normally distributed source, but the droplet deflection causes some changes in the heat input distribution. To estimate the heat flux distribution due to the molten droplet, the contact point where the droplet is transferred on the weld pool surface is calculated from the flight trajectory of the droplets under the arc plasma velocity field obtained from the arc plasma analysis. The numerical analysis shows a tendency of broadened bead width and shallow penetration depth with the increase of rotating frequency. The simulation results are in good agreement with those obtained by the experiments under various welding conditions.

An Impact Position Control of the Ink Droplet of Inkjet Printer

  • In this paper, a position control scheme of the ink droplet is presented for the high image quality and print speed inkjet printer. The proposed scheme estimates the impact position and compensates it by control of the fire strobe time based on the dynamic equations describing the moving trajectory of the ink droplet. Compared to the conventional fire strobe control which is based on the simple synchronization the fire strobe with the position signal of the inkjet nozzle, the proposed control scheme provides more accurate impact position control during the carrier is moving with accelerated or decelerated speed as well as constant speed. The availability of printing during the acceleration and deceleration states of the carrier moving enables the print speed up and the frame size down which means the cost down.

  • A numerical study was performed to investigate spray behavior and its interaction with air flow in a flame holding region of an oil burner(0.1MW) using the KIVA3 code. The numerical results in shape of the recirculating flow and size of the recirculation zone under different conditions were compared to those experimental results. The numerical results in fuel droplet trajectory show that a droplet under 30${\mu}m$ can follow the air flow but a droplet over 50${\mu}m$ penetrates the recirculation zone due to large momentum and a droplet of 30-50${\mu}m$ can follow the recirculating flow or pene-trates the recirculation zone.

  • Liquid is commonly introduced as transversal jets in venturi scrubber which is one of the gas cleaning equipments. The jet dynamics such as penetration and breakup is of fundamental importance to the dust-collection efficiency. We have developed a model that can numerically simulate the breakup of the liquid jet in crossflow. This simulation consists of models on liquid column, jet surface breakup, column fracture and secondary droplet breakup. These models have been embedded in the KIVA3-V code. We have calculated such parameters as the jet penetration, jet trajectory, droplet size, velocity field and the volume flux distribution. The results are compared with the experimental data in this paper.

  • This paper presents some of the results of a project whose aim has been to produce a full simulation model which would determine the efficacy of pesticides for use by both farmers and the bio-chemical industry. The work presented here describes how crop architecture can be mathematically modelled and how the mechanics of pesticide droplet capture can be simulated so that if a wind assisted droplet-trajectory model is assumed then droplet deposition patterns on crop surfaces can be predicted. This achievement, when combined with biological response models, will then enable the efficacy of pesticide use to be predicted.
