  • The evaporation characteristics of single and multicomponent droplets hanging at the tip of a quartz fiber are studied experimentally at the different environmental conditions under normal gravity. Heptane and Hexadecane are selected as two fuels with different evaporation rates and boiling temperatures. At the first step, the evaporation of single component droplet of both fuels has been examined separately. At the next step the evaporation of several blends of these two fuels, as a binary component droplet, has been studied. The temperature and pressure range is selected between 400 and 700 $^{\circ}C$, and 0.1 and 2.5 MPa, respectively. High temperature environment has been provided by a falling electrical furnace. The initial diameter of droplet was in range of 1.1 and 1.3 mm. The evaporation process was recorded by a high speed CCD camera. The results of binary droplet evaporation show the three staged evaporation. In the the first stage the more volatile component evaporates. The droplet temperature rises after an almost non evaporating period and in the third stage a quasi linear evaporation takes place. The evaporation of the binary droplet at low pressure is accompanied with bubble formation and droplet fragmentation and leads to incomplete microexplosion. The component concentration affects the evaporation behavior of the first two stages. The bubble formation and droplet distortion does not appear at high environment pressure. Nomenclature

  • Many studies of microdroplet evaporation from solid surfaces were made with priority given to inkjet printing and dye painting techniques. The objective of these studies is how to evaporate a droplet quickly and uniformly. Also it is necessary to prevent evaporation of a droplet to observe cells in a droplet generated through cell-patterning. In general, an identical volume of a water droplet on hydrophobic surfaces evaporates slower than that on hydrophilic surfaces. In this study, we observe the evaporation process of a droplet on various hydrophobic surfaces and calculated the evaporation rate considering the droplet geometry such as contact angle and height. This study also proposes a new model based on the fact that evaporation mode at the edge of a droplet is different from that at the outer surface of a droplet as the contact angle changes during evaporation. Finally, we reveal the cause fur the increase of evaporation flux and show that the ratio of edge evaporation to total evaporation increases with time.

  • This study aims to experimentally investigate the evaporation characteristics of nanofluid droplet on heated surface at boiling temperature of DI-water. In particular, textured surface was used to examine the effect of wettability on evaporation. At the initial stage of evaporation process, dynamic contact angle (DCA) of nanofluid droplet with 0.01 vol.% concentration on textured surface rapidly increased over its equilibrium contact angle by generated large bubble inside the droplet due to lower wettability. However, contact angle of nanofluid droplet with higher concentration on textured surface decreased with surface tension. In addition, total evaporation time of droplet on textured surface was considerably delayed due to reduction of contact area between droplet and solid surface. Thus, evaporation characteristics were highly affected by the nanofluid concentration and surface wettability.

  • Nonlinear and forced oscillations of supported viscous droplet were focused in the present study. The droplet has a free contact line with solid plate and inviscid fluid. Natural frequencies of a pendant droplet have been investigated experimentally by imposing the acoustic wave while the frequency is being increased at a fixed amplitude. The evaporation was observed at atmosphere pressure. The droplet was recorded throughout the entire evaporation process and transient variations of the volume was measured. The evaporation process of oscillating droplet with thermofoil has been also observed to investigate analyzing the resonance effect on the thermal characteristics of droplet. It is found that a pendant droplet shows the resonant behaviors at each mode similar to the theoretical analysis. During imposing the acoustic wave, the pendant droplet makes a rotating motion in its longitudinal axis which is a new shape oscillation mode. The evaporation rate of a pendant droplet at resonant frequency is significantly enhanced.

  • This study investigates the evaporation characteristics of paired sessile droplets on a heated substrate. In particular, the evaporation time and contact line behaviors were analyzed based on the droplet-to-droplet distance and substrate temperature. The contact line behavior and volume variations were visualized using the shadowgraph method. It was observed that the contact diameter and contact angle exhibited similar behavior for both single and paired droplets regardless of the droplet-to-droplet distance and substrate temperature. The paired droplets demonstrated a longer evaporation time than the single droplet due to the vapor accumulation between the droplets. Furthermore, the scaled lifetime, defined as the ratio of evaporation time between paired and single droplets, increased as the droplet-to-droplet distance decreased and decreased as the substrate temperature increased, attributed natural convection.

  • This paper presents the results of experimental investigation for the effect of heat conduction on the evaporation cooling of water droplet in the process of heat treatment. The experiments are mainly focused on the surface temperature, the surface roughness and the droplet diameter at aluminum. The range of surface temperature is from $80^{\circ}C$ to $140^{\circ}C$, surface roughness is from $R_a=0.18{\mu}m$ to $R_a=1.36{\mu}m$ and droplet diameter is from 2.4 mm to 3.0 mm. The results show that the total evaporation time is shorter for the larger surface roughness, the time averaged heat flux has maximum value for the larger surface roughness and exist the critical heat flux. The total evaporation time has a big influence on the evaporation region for the smaller droplet size, but the total evaporation time has not influence on the nuclear boiling region.

  • Evaporation and ignition characteristics of fuel droplet have major influences on the efficiency and performance of engine. In the present study the experiment of evaporation and self-ignition of single fuel was performed under the various ambient conditions. An individually suspended droplet of n-heptane n-hexadecane ethyl-alcohol and light oil were employed as a liquid droplet. Evaporation and ignition characteristics were measured by using the video-camera and image processing technique under the various ambient temperatures (up to 1000310 OC)and partial pressure of oxigen(up to 60%) The evaporation curve shows that the droplet life time ignition delay time decreases as the ambient temperature and partial pressure of oxigen increase, The temperature variations of droplet were also reported for various fuel and ambient temperatures. The numerical simulations were carried out to predict droplet diameter and temperature with favorable agreement.

  • We experimentally investigate the evaporation characteristics of water droplet on surfaces of various wettabilities in the range of contact angle from 30$^{circ}$ to 150$^{circ}$. When a liquid droplet on a solid surface evaporates, the contact angle generally decreases with time and the evaporation rate varies with the droplet geometry such as the contact angle and the radius of curvature. Experimental data on the contact angle as a function of the droplet volume obtained by digital image analysis techniques cannot be explained by the existing theories. By measuring the temporal evolutions of the droplet radius and contact angle, we find the qualitative difference between the evaporation patterns on the hydrophilic surfaces where the contact radius remains constant initially and those on the superhydrophobic surfaces where the contact angle remains constant. Also, the evaporation rate is observed to depend on the surface material although the currently available models assume that the rate is solely determined by the droplet geometry. Despite the fact that the theory to explain this dependence on the surface remains to be pursued by the future work, we give the empirical relations that can be used to predict the droplet volume evolution for each surface. It is expected that the present study will contribute to interpreting the effect of droplet geometry on the evaporation.

  • This study aims to investigate the influence of the droplet volume on the evaporation characteristics of the sessile droplet. In particular, the effect of the free convection in the vapor domain on the evaporation rate was analyzed through the numerical simulation. The commercial code of the ANSYS Fluent (V.2020 R2) was used to simulate the heat transfer in the liquid-vapor domain. Moreover, we used the diffusion model to estimate the evaporation rate for the different droplet volume under the room temperature. It was found that the evaporation rate significantly increases with the droplet volume because of the larger surface area for the mass transfer. Also, the effect of free convection on the evaporation rate becomes significant with an increment of droplet volume owing to the increase in the droplet radius corresponding to the characteristic length of the free convection.

  • Recently, impinging spray is used for atomization of diesel engine, but it bring on adhesion of fuel. Therefore, we studied about droplet behavior on high temperature plate changing the size of droplet, surface temperatures, and surface roughness of plate. In this study, We studied to confirm experimentally about mechanism of evaporation and ignition process of single fuel droplet. We observed evaporation time, evaporation appearance and ignition delay time by the photopraphs of 8mm video camera. Experimental results are summarized as follows: 1. The boiling point of fuel affect a evaporation and ignition process. 2. The surface roughness affect a evaporation time. 3. The ignition delay time relate to evaporation characteristic.
