  • In this study, with the finite element method we numerically investigate the deformation of liquid drops surrounded by Newtonian or non-Newtonian viscous medium in the axisymmetric contraction flow. 1, 2 or 4 Newtonian or non-Newtonian drops are considered and the truncated power-law model is applied In order to describe non-Newtonian viscous behavior for both fluids. In this type of flow the drop exhibits considerably large deformation, and thus techniques of unstructured mesh generation and auto-remeshing are employed to accurately express the fluid mechanical behavior. We examine the deformation pattern of liquid drops with viscosity dependence different from that of the surrounding medium and also explain their interactions by comparing relative position or speed of drop front.

  • In this study, pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of plain finned heat exchangers having 5.0 mm diameter (fin collar 5.3 mm) tubes were investigated. Six samples having different fin pitches (1.1 to 1.3 mm) and tube rows (1 and 2 row) were tested. The fin pitch had a negligible effect on j and f factors. Both j and f factors decreased as the number of tube row increased, although the difference was not significant for the f factor. When compared with the j and f factors of the samples having 7.3 mm diameter tubes, the present j and f factors yielded lower values. However, the j/f ratio was larger at low Reynolds numbers. Possible reasoning is provided from the flow pattern consideration. Comparison with existing correlations were made.

  • This study was performed to analyze the cooling effect of heated ribs which are frequently used for cooling of electronic parts, using the numerical method. To prevent the excessive pressure drop due to turbulence promoters for the enhancement of heat transfer rate especially, the effect of the angle of turbulence promoter was investigated by the numerical analysis. Heat transfer rate with turbulence promoters with rectangular cross-section increased by 13% in average, but the coefficient of pressure drop increased by 1.68 times than that without them. In the present study, triangular cross-sectional shape turbulence promoters were suggested and numerically tested. Pressure drop of turbulence promoter with the 30 degree triangular cross-sectional shape decreased by 30% from that of rectangular cross-section promoters while heat transfer rate was almost the same. While with 4 turbulence promoters, the heat transfer rate increased by 21%, the pressure drop increased 4 times. It means that the higher capacity of cooling fan should be needed. With the triangular cross-sectional shape, the size of vortex region at the rear of promoters became considerably smaller, so pressure drop became smaller. The effect of the change of cross-sectional shape was not found in the flow pattern near the ribs, so that heat transfer characteristics in the ribs were not changed.

  • In this paper, we compared and analyzed two new models of cyclic packet dropping algorithm, Adaptive Cyclic Packet Dropping algorithm (ACPD), and Non-adaptive Cyclic Packet Dropping algorithm (NCPD) with RIO. The ACPD algorithm drops adaptively packets for the congestion control, as predicting traffic pattern between each cycle. Therefore the ACPD algorithm makes up for the drawback of RIO algorithm and minimizes the wastes of the bandwidth being capable of predicting in the NCPD algorithm. We modelled two cyclic packet drop algorithms and executed a simulation and analyzed the throughput and packet drop rate based on Sending Priority changing dynamically depending on network traffic. In this algorithm, applying the strict drop precedence policy, we get better performance on priority levels. The results show that two new algorithms may provide more efficient and stricter drop precedence policy as compared to RIO independent of traffic load. The ACPD algorithm can provide better performance on priority levels and keep stricter drop policy than other algorithms.

  • Adaptive Cyclic Packet Dropping algorithm (ACPD), and Non-adaptive Cyclic Packet Dropping algorithm (NCPD) are applying stricter drop precedence than that of RIO algorithm. Especially, the ACPD algorithm drops adaptively packets for the congestion control, as predicting traffic pattern between each cycle. Therefore the ACPD algorithm makes up for the drawback of RIO algorithm and minimizes the wastes of the bandwidth being capable of predicting in the NCPD algorithm. And we executed a simulation and analyzed the throughput and packet drop rate based on Sending Priority changing dynamically depending on network traffic. In this algorithm, applying strict drop precedence policy, we get better performance on priority levels. The results show that the proposed algorithms may provide more efficient and stricter drop precedence policy as compared to RIO independent of traffic load. • Adaptive and Strict Packet Dropping mechanism we proposed in this paper drops adaptively packets for the congestion control, as predicting traffic pattern between each cycle. Therefore the proposed mechanism makes up for the drawback of RIO mechanism and minimizes the wastes of the bandwidth being capable of predicting in Dynamic and Strict Packet Dropping (DSPD) mechanism. And we executed a simulation and analyzed the throughput and packet drop rate based on the Sending Drop Precedence changing dynamically depending on the network traffic and compared RIO and the DSPD. • Internal flow characteristics within Y-jet atomizers and the local drop size distribution and cross-sectional averaged drop size at the outside were investigated with the liquid and air injection pressures, mixing port length of atomizers, and the liquid properties taken as parameters. To examine the effect of the liquid viscosity, glycerin-water mixtures were used in this study. The liquid viscosity plays only a minor role in determining the internal flow pattern and the spatial distribution shape of drops, but the drop sizes themselves generally increase with increasing of the liquid viscosity. An empirical correlation for the liquid discharge coefficient at the liquid port was deduced from the experimental results; the liquid discharge coefficient strongly depends on the liquid flow area at the mixing point which is proportional to the local volumetric quality(.betha.$_{Y}$), and the volumetric quality was included in the correlation. Regardless of the value of the liquid viscosity, the compressible flow through the gas port was well represented by the polytropic expansion process(k=1.2), and the mixing point pressure could be simply correlated to the aspect ratio( $l_{m}$/ $d_{m}$) of the mixing port and the air/liquid mass flow rate ratio( $W_{g}$/ $W_{f}$) as reported in the previous study.udy.udy.y.

  • Horizontal two-phase flow pressure drop within rectangular channels with small gap heights have been examined experimentally. The gap heights range from 0.4mm to 4mm corresponding to aspect ratios(the channel height divided by the width) from 0.02 to 0.2. Water and air were used as the test fluids with the superficial velocity ranges being 0.03-2.39m/s and 0.05-18.7m/s, respectively. The experimental results In rectangular channels were compared with the Lockhart-Martinelli correlation, which are widely used for conventional round tube. The Lockhart-Martinelli correlation turned out to be Inappropriate to represent the present experimental data. In this respect, considering the aspect ratio and gap-height effects, an empirical correlation on two-phase flow pressure drop was proposed. The proposed correlation successfully covers the bubbly, plug, slug and annular flow regimes.

  • Many investigations have been made to determine the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics for single phase flow in tape generated swirl flow. But few studies have been carried out to investigate the heat transfer in two component, two phase swirl flow with non-boiling. An experimental study has been conducted to determine the effects of tape twist ratios on two phase convective heat transfer coefficients, pressure drop, and void fraction distribution in a non-boiling, air-water, two phase flow. The flow conditions were both swirl and non swirl flows. The internal diameter of the test section is 42.5mm. The tape twist ratios of pitch to diameter ratio varied from 4.0 to 10.6. The heating conditions were isothermal and nonisothermal. The flow patterns identified with experiments were bubbly, bubbly-slug, slug, and slug-annular flow in up-flow. This study has concluded that no significant difference in void fraction distribution were observed both isothermal and nonisothermal conditions, the pressure drop for two phase flow with twisted tape swirler increase as the tape twist ratio decrease, and that values of two phase heat transfer coefficient increase when the tape twist ratio decreases.

  • This experimental study measured and analyzed the heat transfer and pressure drop performance of brazed plate heat exchangers. Heat exchangers with different plate numbers of 10, 20, 30, and 40 were used for measurement, and their plate pattern was identical. The experiment was performed with distilled water, by changing the hot-side flow rate, with the cold-side flow rate fixed. The experimental results were compared with the calculated values by correlations based on gasketed plate heat exchangers, and showed that the heat transfer performance and pressure drop of brazed plated heat exchangers were higher than those of gasketed plate heat exchangers. From the variation of the friction factor, it could be inferred that in the flow channels of brazed plate heat exchangers, turbulent flow occurred at Reynolds numbers higher than 500. A new correlation to predict the Nusselt number was developed, and its absolute average deviation was 2.62%, compared with the values from the experimental data.
