Differences of Driving Performance and Physiological Responses Between Young Male and Female Drivers for Unexpected Situation Using a Ggraphic Vehicle Ssimulator (화상 자동차 시뮬레이터를 이용한 돌발 상황 발생 시 젊은 남녀 운전자의 운전 수행 능력과 생리 반응의 차이에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of driving performance and physiological responses between young male and female drivers for unexpected situation using a graphic vehicle simulator. The participants included 20 college graduates; 23 males aged $24.3\;{\pm}\;1.4$ with $2.3\;{\pm}\;1.5$ years of driving experiences and 23 females aged $23.2\;{\pm}\;2.1$ with $2.2\;{\pm}\;1.7$ years of driving experience. The participants were instructed to drive the vehicle simulator which was programed unexpected situation for two minutes. The physiological measurements used were autonomic responses of electrocardiogram (ECG) and skin conductance response (SCR), and the driving performance measurements used were the reaction time of break and the rate of collision for unexpected situation. Results showed that there were no significant differences between male and female drivers in the reaction time of break and the rate of collision for unexpected situation. Averaged R-R interval decreased and LF IHF and SCL amplitude increased for unexpected situation. There were no significant differences between male and female in the averaged R-R interval and LF/HF for unexpected situation. On the other hand, SCL amplitude of female was higher than male. Rising time to maximum SCL amplitude of female was longer than male.

  • For professional drivers, there is a possibility to have musculoskeletal disorders on ankle joint due to repetitive pedaling operation. Therefore, this study have focused to examine ankle active range of motion (AROM), dorsiflexor strength, and pressure pain threshold (PPT) of tibialis anterior muscle (TA) in taxi drivers compared to a age-matched control group. Thirty male taxi drivers with at least 10 years of driving experience and thirty male sedentary workers were evaluated for ankle AROM, dorsiflexor strength, and PPT of TA. Multiple independent t-tests were used to identify significant differences between two groups. For the results, taxi drivers had significantly less AROM in dorsiflexion and greater AROM in external tibial rotation compared to the control group. Also, dorsiflexor strength and PPT of TA in taxi drivers was significantly lower than in the control group. This study indicates that the repetitive ankle movements associated with driving have an effect on ankle AROM, dorsiflexor strength, and PPT of TA and may lead to work-related musculoskeletal disorders on ankle. Professional drivers may need to be educated to prevent a potential musculoskeletal disorders associated with repetitive movement.

Empirical Study on the Risk Analysis of Young Driver Utilizing Integrated Data Base(DB) (통합DB를 활용한 청년운전자의 위험도 실증분석)

  • Traffic accident risk of young drivers(less than 25) is reported to have 8 times as high as that of middle aged drivers(between 30 and 49). Despite the rise of traffic accident risk, few have been attempted to take a look into driving characteristics of young drivers. The purpose of this paper is to analyze age-specific risks of young driver by means of database of insurance and vehicle inspection, thereby collecting data such as age, vehicle mileage, injuries and so on. We conducted Data-Mining(CART) and Portfolio analysis according to age groups(every 10 years). The conclusions which can be drawn from this empirical study are as follows: (1) Despite the fact that young drivers have low vehicle mileage, the rate of fatality is relatively high. (2) Being concerned of vehicle mileage, 24,000km of driving experience is thought to be critical in differing in fatality rate. Having annual average mileage fewer than 24,169 km, accident frequency is relatively lower than that exceeding 24,169 km(1,571 cases). Backed upon these, some recommendations about driver's license system for young driver to improve are given.

  • PURPOSES : The effects on traffic accidents change with the changing environment. Accordingly, this study analyzes the characteristics of traffic accidents based on the personal characteristics (gender and age) of drivers, and those of 25 autonomous districts in Seoul, and suggests improvements. METHODS : Based on data pertaining to traffic accidents in Seoul, the analysis of accident characteristics was conducted by categorizing the types of traffic accidents according to the drivers' gender and age, and characteristics of 25 autonomous districts in Seoul. Further, for statistical verification, the SPSS software was used to derive influence variables through a multinomial logistic regression analysis, and a method for reducing traffic accidents was proposed. RESULTS : Analysis results show that males tend to be more involved in speed-related accidents and females in low-experience driving-related accidents such as those during parking and alleyway driving. In addition, variables such as age, automobile type, district, and day of the week are found to influence accident types. CONCLUSIONS : This study analyzed the accident characteristics based on personal and city characteristics to reflect the sociological characteristics that influence traffic accidents. The number of traffic accidents in Korea could be decreased drastically by implementing the results of this study in customized safety education and traffic maps.

Area Identification for Road Design (도로 설계 지역 구분)

  • PURPOSES : Ambiguous decision on whether rural or urban area for road design can increase the construction cost and restrict the land use of surrounding area. However, administrative classification on rural and urban area is not directly related to road design because of this classification is not based on the engineering viewpoint, so method which can explain the road design context is required. METHODS : Method which enables to identify the area for road design is suggested based on the deceleration expected to be experienced by drivers who use the road section concerned. Deceleration rate corresponding to the area such as rural or urban suggested in Road Design Guideline is used as the criteria to identify the area by comparing this value with the estimated deceleration rate at the road section concerned. Speed profile method is utilized to derive the deceleration rate, and speed estimation way for reflecting both road geometry and intersection is suggested using stopping sight distance concept. RESULTS : The procedure of the method application is suggested, and the design example utilizing the method is provided. CONCLUSIONS : The method is expected to be used to identify the area for road design with engineering viewpoint, and design consistency among the roads with similar driving environment can be made.

A Study on Native Wildflower Planting Programs for Sustainable Roadside Vegetation in USA (환경친화적 도로녹화를 위한 미국 야생화 식재 정책에 관한 연구)

  • Roadside native vegetation provides important habitat for plants and animals, and provides visual amenity and beauty for drivers and rural areas. In particular, native wildflowers create and maintain attractive landscaping and scenic vistas while help protect and restore the natural environment. However, it is lacking in government policies and guidelines about using native wildflowers for roadside vegetation and alien invasive plants are a major threat to our environment. The purpose of this study is to review the regulations and programs for roadside vegetation, especially native wildflowers in USA in order to learn lessons about developing wildflower policies in Korea. A summary of results follows: (1) the goals of roadside vegetation have been shifted from beautification for pleasant driving experience to sustainable and economical maintenance. (2) Various funds and laws by federal and local government are essential for native wildflower planting and roadside enhancement. (3) Ongoing projects on seed collection and seed banking of native plants are conducted by wildflower research centers to conserve and propagate endangered plants. (4) Recognizing that wildflower viewing holds tremendous potential, increasing local governments try to grow wildflower tourism for economic benefits. In conclusion, we should establish a long-range plan and regulations on roadside wildflowers planting in order to create safe and sustainable transportation corridors in Korea. In addition, more research on wildflower habitat and propagation should be warranted and landscape architects should play a definitive role in providing pleasant driving experiences and promoting wildflower tourism.

Experimental Method for the Identification of the Propeller Blade Vibration Characteristics (프로펠러 날개의 진동특성에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • An experiment method has been developed to analyse the vibration characteristics of marine propeller blades, and vibration tests have been carried out on the model scale propeller in air and in water. The driving point transfer function(acceleration/excitation force) has been measured and modified by compensating the attachment effect of the impedance head. The measured natural frequencies in air have been compared with the theoretical results by an in-house FEM code PROSTEC. The added masses have been derived by comparing the measured natural frequencies in air and in water, and the results have been compared to the results using existing formula based on experience.

A Study on the Prevention Measures of Human Error with Railway Drivers (열차 운전 종사자를 대상으로 한 인적오류의 개선 방안 연구)

  • In this study, the causes of human error were identified through the survey of the drivers of the three organizations: Seoul Metro, Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation, and Korail. It was started with the aim of finding and eliciting causes in various directions including human factors, job factors, and environmental factors. The Cronbach alpha value was 0.95 for the reliability significance of the stress-induced factors in the operational area. The significance probability for organisational factors was shown to be 0.82, and the significance of the sub-accident experience and the driving skill factors in operation was 0.81 In addition, the analysis results showed that stress-induced in the field of driving is higher than the human factors in the reliability analysis. The results of the analysis confirmed that the reliability of the organizational and operational stress-induced factors was higher than other causes. In order to reduce urban railroad accidents, this paper suggests a method for operating safe urban railroad through the minimization human errors.

Emotion-aware Task Scheduling for Autonomous Vehicles in Software-defined Edge Networks

  • Autonomous vehicles are gradually being regarded as the mainstream trend of future development of the automobile industry. Autonomous driving networks generate many intensive and delay-sensitive computing tasks. The storage space, computing power, and battery capacity of autonomous vehicle terminals cannot meet the resource requirements of the tasks. In this paper, we focus on the task scheduling problem of autonomous driving in software-defined edge networks. By analyzing the intensive and delay-sensitive computing tasks of autonomous vehicles, we propose an emotion model that is related to task urgency and changes with execution time and propose an optimal base station (BS) task scheduling (OBSTS) algorithm. Task sentiment is an important factor that changes with the length of time that computing tasks with different urgency levels remain in the queue. The algorithm uses task sentiment as a performance indicator to measure task scheduling. Experimental results show that the OBSTS algorithm can more effectively meet the intensive and delay-sensitive requirements of vehicle terminals for network resources and improve user service experience.

Work-Family Compatibility Experience of Married Nurse: Focusing on the Expanding Stage of the Family Life Cycle (기혼간호사의 일-가정양립경험: 가족확대기 간호사를 중심으로)

  • This study examined the work-family compatibility experience of married nurses. The participants of this research were 7 registered nurses who are on the expanding stage of their family life cycle. Data were collected by individual in-depth interviews from June 10 to November 30, 2015 and analyzed using phenomenological methodology by Colaizzi (1978). The results showed that the work-family compatibility experience of married nurses may be categorized into 4 categories, 'the reality of work and parenting', 'external and internal conflicts about the compatibility of work and parenting', 'compromise with reality for solving the difficulty of compatibility', 'growing desire and efforts for compatibility', and may be identified with 12 theme clusters and 29 themes. The worthiness as a professional woman and happiness in child rearing are the driving force of the compatibility of work and family in married nurses. Therefore, the continued support of government policies and family is important for married nurses to maintain work and family balance.
