The vibration reduction process for the driver comfort of a forklift truck is studied in this study since the related driver comfort is a primary design target in the vehicle design recently. However, the underlying study for a vibration analysis regarding to the driver comfort is still an element stage. Thus, a preceding large work has to be needed to apply the CAE technology for the detail vehicle design, and it prevents the vehicle optimal design. To reduce the proceeding large works, the evaluated process and required data are comply with the accumulated trouble shooting experiences in this study. Since the driver comfort is a human related problem, the human vibration index associated with analysis vibration result is additionally introduced as a driver comfort judgement value.
In this paper, the driver seat comfort of eight automobiles was studied. The joint angles and anthropometric data of eleven subjects sitting on the seating buck were investigated using the instrument devices such as scale, goniometer, vernier calipers, protractor, Martin set. The joint angles of the most comfort posture were found by experiment and compared with previous studies. The anthropometric data of Korean(1992 year surveys) and American(1970∼1974 year) were applied to evaluate the driver seat layout of Korean automobile. The joint angles of the most comfort posture for eleven subjects were obtained with experimental results. The joint angles were agreed with reference angles. The driver seat layout was not suited to seat length and acceleratorseatpan forward distance in 5 percentiles female, pedal separation and seatpan-roof height in 95 percentiles male. Korean automobiles were not suited to seatpan length and steering wheelseatpan clearance, floor-roof height for American 95 percentiles male. The driver anthropometric dimensions were more suitable to middle size than small size automobiles.
In this study, we investigated and evaluated the air conditioning operation of the driver according to the temperature difference between the inside and outside of a car parked outside during the summer. We suggest including a comfort mode to the car air conditioning system to improve the thermal comfort of the driver, in which the comfort can be maintained for a longer time. For the a result of our experiment, in the cases with temperature of above $45^{\circ}C$ inside of the car, the subjects preferred strong air blow with the face and the arms in the direction of the blow. In the cases with temperature of below $40^{\circ}C$ inside of the car, the subjects preferred lower volume of air blow. In the temperature below $28.1^{\circ}C$ inside of the car, the mean temperature on the skin of the driver reached the comfort zone.
This study is about the design and analysis ot a suspension damper for truck driver's seat to improve the ride comfort. Trucks are usually subjected to hostile driving environments. Therefore, many truck driver's seat have suspension seats to isolate the vibration from the cab floor panel. Because the vehicle suspension system can reduce the primary vibration from the ground, only low frequency vibration can be transmitted to the driver's seat. But, this low frequency vibration can be harmful to the driver. The seat damper is very critical element to improve the ride comfort for the driver. In this study, a four-stage damper is designed and analyzed for the vibration capability. The damping coefficient of this damper can lie manually controlled in response to the road and driving environment.
In this study, we investigated the operating method of a driver for an air conditioning system according to the temperature difference between the indoor and outdoor environments of a car parked outside during the summer. Researchers of this study suggest the comfort mode of a car air conditioner to improve the thermal comfort of the driver, thereby maintaining longer comfort. This study separately, analyzed temperatures on a cloudy day and sunny day. The results showed the car indoor heat environment and physiological results (EEG, ECG) of the subject. It showed a difference of the car indoor heat environment by weather with the difference also appearing in the physiological response of the subject. In conclusion, in this paper, on the basis of the physiological response of a subject, a comfortable algorithm of automobile air conditioner is being suggested.
Safety and comfort are importance concepts for designers of vehicle seats and instrument panels. There have been a lot of researches on comfortable sitting postures, however, relatively a few researchers have tried to find a desirable driving posture in consideration of both comfort and safety. This study investigates a relationship between comfort and safety of sitting posture of a driver. Since a seat is closely related to comfort, the angular data of comfortable sitting posture were obtained through the correlation between the seat and the driver. In order to acquire the data of safe sitting posture, computer simulations were performed for various seatback angles. Based on comparing and analyzing the data obtained, the optimal sitting posture is suggested for both comfort and safety aspects.
Driver's cab shall be designed ergonomically to provide the comfort for a driver to gather the information from the equipments and to operate the equipments effectively. The typical three design factors effected on the comfort are the access of driver's cab, freedom of movement inside the cabs and visibility condition. All control equipments shall be arranged so that those which are most often used or are of critical importance are the most convenient to the driver. The layout of driver's cab shall maximize the use of available space to be rugged and easily maintained. The visibility for the running direction along the track shall be secured. The visibility condition apply the seating position of the driver. Not only the environment condition(temperature, humidity, rattle, etc) but also the construction of driver's cab can be ergonomic design factor.
This paper describes autonomous emergency braking systems (AEB) for elderly drivers designed to consider their driving characteristics. With aging, perception-reaction time, and decision-making time increase accordingly. Without being aware of these performance degradations, however, changes in driving patterns due to increased alertness while driving lead to vehicle crashes. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an autonomous emergency braking system by incorporating the characteristics of the elderly driver. In order to enhance the driver acceptance of older people, perception-reaction time, alertness, and ride comfort need to be considered for conventional autonomous emergency braking systems (C-AEB). Proactive AEB(P-AEB) algorithm has been proposed to reflect human factor of elderly driver above. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated through MATLAB simulink simulation studies. It has been shown from the computer simulations that the proposed P-AEB algorithm enhances the driver acceptance of older people by improving ride comfort while ensuring safety of vehicle.
In the present study, a new methodology is presented to study the ride comfort and bridge responses of a long-span bridge-traffic-wind coupled vibration system considering stochastic characteristics of traffic flow and bridge surface progressive deterioration. A three-dimensional vehicle model with 24 degrees-of-freedoms (DOFs) including a three-dimensional non-linear suspension seat model and the longitudinal vibration of the vehicle is firstly presented to study the ride comfort. An improved cellular automaton (CA) model considering the influence of the next-nearest neighbor vehicles and a progressive deterioration model for bridge surface roughness are firstly introduced. Based on the equivalent dynamic vehicle model approach, the bridge-traffic-wind coupled equations are established by combining the equations of motion of both the bridge and vehicles in traffic using the displacement relationship and interaction force relationship at the patch contact. The numerical simulations show that the proposed method can simulate rationally the ride comfort and bridge responses of the bridge-traffic-wind coupled system; and the vertical, lateral, and longitudinal vibrations of the driver seat model can affect significantly the driver's comfort, as expected.
As an important and relatively easy to implement technology for realizing Intelligent Transportation Systems(ITS), Adaptive Cruise Control(ACC) automatically adjusts vehicle speed and distance to a preceding vehicle, thus enhancing driver comfort and safety. One of the key issues associated with ACC development is usability and user acceptance. Control parameters in ACC should be optimized in such a way that the system does not conflict with driving behavior of the driver and further that the driver feels comfortable with ACC. A driving simulator is a comprehensive research tool that can be applied to various human factor studies and vehicle system development in a safe and controlled environment. This study investigated driving behavior with ACC for drivers with different driving styles using the driving simulator. The ACC simulation system was implemented on the simulator and its performance was evaluated first. The Driving Style Questionnaire(DSQ) was used to classify the driving styles of the drivers in the simulator experiment. The experiment results show that, when driving with ACC, preferred headway-time was 1.5 seconds regardless of the driving styles, implying consistency in driving speed and safe distance. However, the lane keeping ability reduced, showing the larger deviation in vehicle lateral position and larger head and eye movement. It is suggested that integration of ACC and lateral control can enhance driver safety and comfort even further.
