Oxidation process constitute an important and often indispensable measure in the reliable production of safe drinking water. Optimal introduction of oxidation processes into the treatment of drinking water requires an exact knowledge of the reactions taking place and of their interrelationships. It is the aim of this paper to review the necessary knowledge in summarized form.
With drinking water standards becoming more rigorous and increasing demands for additional water quantities, while water resources are becoming more polluted, mathematical models became an important tool to improve water treatment processes performance in the water supply system. Water treatment processes models reflect the knowledge of the processes and they are useful tools for water treatment process optimization, design, operator training for decision making and fundamental research. Unfortunately, in the current practice of drinking-water production and distribution, water treatment processes modeling is not successfully applied. This article presents a review of some existing water treatment processes simulators and the experience of their application and indicating the main weak points of each process. Also, new approaches in the modeling of water treatment are presented and recommendations are given for the work in the future.
Microplastics have become a rising issue in due to its detection in oceans, rivers, and tap water. Although a large number of studies have been conducted on the detection and quantification in various water bodies, the number of research conducted on the removal and treatment of microplastics are still comparatively low. In the current research, the inflow and removal of microplastics were investigated for various drinking water treatment plants around the world. Addition to the investigation of filed research, a survey was also conducted on the current research trend on microplastic removal for different treatment processes in the drinking water treatment plants. This includes the researches conducted on coagulation/flocculation, sedimentation, dissolved air flotation, sand filtration and disinfection processes. The survey indicated mechanisms of microplastic removal in each process followed by the removal characteristics under various conditions. Limitations of current researches were also mentioned, regarding the gap between the laboratory experimental conditions and field conditions of drinking water treatment plants. We hope that the current review will aid in the understanding of current research needs in the field of microplastic removal in drinking water treatment.
A comprehensive fractionation technique was applied to a set of water samples obtained along drinking water treatment process with ozonation and biological activated carbon (BAC) process to obtain detailed profiles of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and to evaluate the haloacetic acid (HAA) formation potentials of these DOM fractions. The results indicated that coagulation-sedimentation-sand filtration treatment showed limited ability to remove hydrophilic fraction (28%), while removal of hydrophobic and transphilic fraction were 57% and 40%, respectively. And ozonation and BAC treatment showed limited ability to remove hydrophobic fractions (6%), while removal of hydrophilic and transphilic fractions were 25% and 18%. The haloacetic acid formation potential (HAAFP)/dissolved organic carbon (DOC) of hydrophilic fraction was the highest along the treatment train and HAAFP/DOC of hydrophilic fraction was higher than hydrophobic and transphilic fraction as 23%~30%, because of better removal for hydrophobic fraction both in concentration and reactivity.
With a belief of high water quality production and less chemical usage, membrane technology including Microfiltration (MF), Ultrafiltration (UF), and Nanofiltration(NF) is being employed more and more in drinking water treatment process. However, due to higher energy consumption of UF and NF, MF is normally used for drinking water treatment especially in a plant of large scale. In this investigation, performance ofsand filtration and membrane filtration was compared regarding removal of various water quality parameters, such as TOC, DOC, KMnO4 consumption, THMFP, and HAAFP. Two lines of pilot plant have been operated, one of which line is a traditional advanced water treatment process which includes sedimentation, sand filtration, ozonation, and activated carbon, and the other line is an alternative treatment process which includes sedimentation with inclined plate, MF membrane, ozonation, and activated carbon. For the first about 4months of period, MF filtration showed similar or little bit higher performance than sand filtration. However, after about 4month later, sand filtration showed much higher performance in removing all parameters monitored in the investigation. It was found that sand filtration is a better option than MF filtration as far as microbial community is fully activated in sand filter bed.
Many advanced treatment processes have been introduced to WTPs, however, the consumer confidence on tap water is still low and the percentage of drinking water directly from the tap is less than 2 %. One of the methods to improve the credibility of tap water is to introduce a drinking water certification system. By introducing the system, water treatment processes can be optimized, which in turn, can significantly improve drinking water quality. In this paper, 6 water quality parameters(i.e., turbidity, CT, residual chlorine, geosmin, 2-MIB, Mn) which have significant influences on tap water quality and consumer confidence were identified, and their recommended guidelines were proposed. 3-Star or 5-Star certification can be awarded to the WTPs which have met the certification criteria. The drinking water certification system can be carried out as a voluntary program among drinking water suppliers.
In this study, three pilot-scale plants with the capacity 30 $m^3$/day were designed and set up to treat reservoir water for the production of drinking water. Three treatment processes were compared in the pilot testing: process 1 (coagulation- flocculation- sedimentationsand filtration- ozone- BAC); process 2 (coagulation- flocculation- sedimentation- microfiltration-ozone- BAC); and process 3 (coagulation- flocculation- sedimentation- sand filtration- GAC). The quality of water has been evaluated on the basis of selected parameters such as turbidity, color, consumption of $KMnO_4$, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP), geosmin and 2-MIB. A detailed assessment of performance was carried out during a five months operation. Process 2 was found to have better removal efficiency of DOC, THMFP, geosmin and 2-MIB than process 1 and process 3 under identical conditions, although the removal rate of color was found to be the same in the three cases.
The application of the membrane filtration process has been increased for the drinking water treatment system because of excellent quality of treated water compared with the sand filtration process. The selection of suitable pre-treatment processes and optimum flux according to the characteristics of raw water are important factors for the design of membrane processes. In this study, the most efficient pre-treatment processes for drinking water was selected by investigating the effects of pre-treatment processes on the operational stability of the membrane filtration process. Both lab-scale and pilot-scale experiments were conducted. In the lab-scale test, the effect of pre-treatment processes on the stability of the membrane filtration process was investigated indirectly by comparing the performance of membrane flux for raw water, pre-treated water, and membrane permeated water. In the pilot-scale test, the usefulness of prefiltration processes was assessed by comparing the performance of single membrane process and hybrid coagulation-membrane process. The results indicated that the coagulation process contributed to the stabilization of trans-membrane pressure (TMP) by removing contaminants on membranes, though the pre-filtration process had little effect on the TMP.
Recently water demand is increasing as the industry prospers. The increase of water demand is followed by the increase of wastewater discharge which pollutes rivers and ground water extensively. These rivers, reservoirs and ground water are sources for drinking water and their contamination affects the quality of water supply and other potable water. In Korea there are 776 water treatment plants which supply drinking water from main rivers or reservoirs. Rivers are the biggest water source for drinking water is being contaminated, the innovation of treatment process is needed. The construction and operation of water supply facilities is under the control of the Ministry of Construction and the water supply offices of cities and provinces. However, drinking water quality is under the control of the bureau of sanitation in the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. There are 33 items in drinking water quality standards of Korea. Trihalomethanes, Selenium, Diazinone and other three of pesticides have been included lately, The Ministry of Health and Social Affairs is planning to enhance. the level of $VOC_S$(Vola-tile Organic Compounds) standard. Drinking water quality standard is the goal to protect the quality of supply water and ground water. In order to protect the source water from domestic or industrial water, technological improvement and adequate investment should be urgently made. The ultimate goal of drinking water quality is safety and health of consumers. The more stringent the standard are, the better the water quality will be. As the drinking water quality standards become more stringent this year, various and positive solutions by the authorities concerned must be prepared.
Perchlorate, which is still unregulated, is found in tap water, posing a threat to public health. In and out of Korea, there is no clear standard for drinking water quality or discharge. To make matters worse, Perchlorate study is in its infancy in Korea. This research tracked fresh water and purified water of water purification facility A and B located at the city of D, where Nak-dong River is being utilized as the purified water. And it was found that purified water shows no particular pattern in Perchlorate concentrations but represented a higher level of concentration compared to fresh water. With utilizing the research results, the study sought the impact of activated-carbon treatment process on Perchlorate elimination and found out that Perchlorate concentrations increased 38% after the process. The result proves that conventional water purification process can't eliminate Perchlorate. Therefore, it is reasonable that Perchlorate discharge from sources should be minimized.
