Application of SBR Process to Treat Pickling Wastewater including the High Nitrate and Ca+2 (고농도 질산성질소와 Ca+2을 함유한 산세폐수의 효과적인 처리를 위한 SBR 공정의 적용)

  • This research presents results from laboratory and pilot-scale experiments to remove high-nitrate in pickling wastewater using the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) as a biological method. During the experimental periods, the influent concentrations of NOx-N and $Ca^{+2}$ were analyzed to be 350-1,600 and 700-800 mg/L, respectively. In order to provide carbon source for denitrification, methanol has been added in proportion to the influent nitrate loading. The mean concentrations of MLSS and MLVSS, the fraction of volatile solids in sludge and the sludge volume index were measured to be 27 g/L, 5 g/L, 18.5% and 7.5, respectively. The solid retention time was kept in the range of 18 to 22 days, specific denitrification rate ($U_{dn}$) was $0.301g{NO_3}^--N/gVSS/day$. The oxidized nitrogen concentration of effluent ranged 2-34 mg/L with an average of 5.2 mg/L, the overall reduction in total nitrogen was more than 99.2%. In order to treat the pickling wastewater including the high concentration of nitrate and $Ca^{+2}$, the continuous flow process is not suitable because the specific gravity of the sludge is considerably increased by $Ca^{+2}$, thus the SBR process is shown to be very effective to treat the pickling wastewater.

Health-Related Behavioral Factors Associated with Nutritional Risks in Korean Aged 50 years and Over (50세 이상 중년 및 노인의 건강행위 요인에 따른 영양위험 연구)

  • Undernutrition could be a significant deterrent to healthy aging and could negatively affect health outcomes in elderly. This study aimed to assess health-related factors which are associated with nutritional risks in middle-aged and elderly individuals by a cross-sectional study. Interviews were conducted with 2660 subjects (847 males, 1813 females), aged 50 years and over, in 15 cities in Korea. Data on food intake were obtained through a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires. Nutritional status were analyzed according to health-related factors including cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, exercise, stress and depression level. Less regular exercise was associated with a higher likelihood of a poor nutrition [odds ratio (OR) 1.94; 95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.43-2.65] of middle-aged and elderly male subjects. Cigarette smoking (OR 1.84; 95% CI 1.24-2.71), less exercise (OR 2.58; 95% CI 2.07-3.21), stress (OR 1.73; 95% CI 1.36-2.22), and depression (OR 1.34, 95% CI 1.08-1.67) of middle-aged and elderly female subjects was associated with a higher likelihood of a poor nutrition. The results of the multiple regression analysis showed that less exercise proved to be the strongest predictors for the poor nutrition, followed by stress, smoking, and depression (model $R^2= 9.0%$). It suggests that guidance to promote regular exercise, to quit smoking, to minimize stress and depression level might help to improve nutritional status of middle-aged and elderly in Korea. These findings also suggest that having recommendable health behaviors are beneficial to the good nutrition of subjects aged 50 years and over.

Consumption of Health Functional Foods and Related Factors in Male Workers in Gyeongnam (경남 일부지역 남성 근로자들의 건강 기능 식품 섭취 실태 및 관련 요인)

  • This study was carried out to investigate consumption patterns of health functional foods (HFF) and analyze their related factors in male workers in order to provide basic data for appropriate understanding and optimal use of HFF. The subjects were 325 shipbuilding workers aged 20~50 in the Geoje area. About 84% of subjects reported that they were currently consuming or had experience of consuming HFF. The most commonly used type of HFF was vitamins (53.5%), followed by red ginseng (28.9%) and vegetable extract (15.4%). The major reasons for consuming and not-consuming HFF were 'to recovery from fatigue' (49.5%) and 'can not trust the effects' (39.4%), respectively. The intake period was 'less than 3 months' (35.5%), average monthly expense was 'less than 50,000 won' (49.1%), and purchase place was 'store of health functional foods' (32.2%) as the most common answers. The effects after consuming HFF were 'moderate' (51.3%) as the most common answer, and 16.1% of subjects experienced side effects, such as diarrhea, indigestion and nausea. Contributing factors for selecting and desire for future use of HFF were 'effectiveness' (52.2%) and 'when necessary' (67.8%) as the most common answers. Experience of using HFF was positively correlated with age (p<0.05), marital status (p<0.05), unbalanced diet (p<0.01), concern about health (p<0.05), and fear for disease (p<0.05). Purchase of HFF was positively correlated with fear of disease (p<0.01), whereas it was negatively correlated with frequency of exercise (p<0.05). The desire for future use of HFF was positively correlated with concern about health (p<0.05), fear of disease (p<0.01) and drinking (p<0.05). In conclusion, factors affecting consumption patterns of health functional foods (HFF) were age, marital status, unbalanced diet, concern about health, fear of disease and drinking.

The Degree of Fatigue Depending on Constitution in Middle-Aged Women (중년 여성의 체질별 피로 - 한방병원 내원환자를 중심으로 -)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the subjective degree of fatigue, the degree of fatigue depending on constitution, and the factors related to fatigue in middle-aged women. Method: Data were collected from 51 patients, registered at Oriental Medicine Hospital in J-city and K-city respectively. The instrument used in this study were the Multidimensional Assessment of Fatigue and the Questionnaire of Sasang Constitution Classification Ⅱ. Data analysis was done SPSS Result: The characteristics of constitution in middle-aged women could be divided into three: twenty six people of Soeumin, thirteen people of Taeumin, and twelve people of Soyangin. The degree of fatigue in middle-aged women: the average score 30.61 out of the total score 40. Subdivision of fatigue scores: common fatigue degree 7.71, distress due to fatigue 7.67, degree of daily activity fatigue 7.43, and fatigue frequency in the previous week 7.84. There were significant differences in the degree of fatigue depending on constitution in middle-aged women(p=.033). This study revealed weight, exercise, and drinking are important factors that can exert influence on the degree of fatigue. Also, there was a big difference in the degree of fatigue depending on constitution. Conclusion: In conclusion, fatigue is one of the difficult problems with middle-aged women. And this study revealed that change in the weight(especially loss of weight), physical exercise, and drinking are important factors that can exert influence on the degree of fatigue. Also, there was a big difference in the degree of fatigue depending on constitution. Therefore it is necessary to develop Korean nursing intervention to providing an appropriate environment where there is the harmony of the dual principles of the negative and positive, and patients can be taken care of properly.

Evaluation of Dietary Risk Factors for Abnormal Serum Cholesterol in Korean Sedentary Male Adults

  • This study investigated whether dietary factors are more influential factor than other health behavior such as drinking, smoking and exercise on abnormal serum cholesterol level inspite of Korean dietary pattern differences compared to Europeans and Americans. A double case control study model has been used for the study design. One model consisted of high blood cholesterol cases and control. the other model consisted of low blood cholesterol cased and controls. 5.398 sedentary male workers who had taken medical examinations at a university hospital were used as the study subjects. Out of the study subjects, 36individuals with high blood cholesterol cases and 30 individuals with low blood cholesterol cases were selected. For the 66 individual control selection, the individual control selection, the individuals matching method was adopted. The food frequency method was used to collect the data for assessment of the dietary factors. A standardized questionnaire was used to investigate other health behavior. logistic regression analysis was employed to measure the relative importance between the factors considered. There were no statistically significant differences observed in nutrients consumption or other health behavior among the low, normal and high blood cholesterol groups, An overmatching effect had been suspected as the cause of those findings. However, the results of logistic regression analysis to identify the factors influencing high serum cholesterol showed that odd ratios of dietary factors such as tocopherol(3.0) and saturated fatty acid(1.6) were higher than I. I of smoking and 1.2 of drinking. Similar results were also observed incases of low serum cholesterol. The above findings imply that although the dietary pattern is quite different from that of Europeans and America, the dietary factor is still a significant factor for abnormal blood cholesterol in Koreans. Therefore, the dietary risk factor identified in high fat consumption populations are still relevant for the relatively healthy Korean as guideline for preventive health practices. Health Behavior Factors Associated with Sugar-sweetened Beverage Intake among Adolescents (한국 청소년의 가당음료 섭취 관련 건강 행동 요인 분석)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to measure the intake rate of SSBs (sugar sweetened beverages) and examine the relationship between health behavior factors and SSBs intake by adolescents. Methods: This study used data from the 2016 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, which included 65,528 study participants. SSBs intake frequency was measured by asking respondents if they consumed soda, high-caffeinated beverages, and sugary drinks during the previous week. Type of intake was categorized into three groups according to the number of consumed drinks [SSBs (0): None; SSBs (1-2): 1 or 2 consumed; SSBs (3): 3 consumed]. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to examine health behaviors that affected SSBs consumption. Results: Increased SSBs intake was significantly correlated with current smoking (OR=2.4, 95% CI=1.82-3.17), current drinking (OR=2.13, 95% CI=1.82-2.51), sedentary time increase (OR=1.31, 95% CI=1.15-1.49), three days or more physical activity per week (OR=1.12, 95% CI=1.02-1.24), <8 hours sleep (OR=1.6, 95% CI=1.43-1.78), increased internet usage time (OR=1.44, 95% CI=1.25-1.65). Conclusions: Sugar-sweetened beverages intake by Korean adolescents was associated with health behaviors such as smoking, drinking, sedentary time increase, more physical activity, poor sleeping time, and increased internet use time. Based on these results, it is necessary to recognize the influence of SSBs intake and to intervene to reduce consumption of SSBs.

Factors Associated with Sexual Experience among Adolescents (청소년의 성경험 영향요인)

  • This study was conducted in order to figure out sexual experience among in Korean adolescents and its affecting factors. For the research method, it was a secondary analysis using raw data from the 13th(2017) Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey Data and the data from 62,276 adolescents were used for the analysis in this study. For the data analysis, frequency analysis, ${\chi}^2$-test, and logistic regression analysis were conducted by using SPSS 23.0 program, As a result of the research, the factors on sexual experience in male students included grade, school record, living type, economic state, depression, perceived stress, suicidal ideation, drinking, smoking, drug, and experience of sex education(p<.001) while those in female students included grade, living type, father's education, economic state, depression, suicidal ideation, drinking, smoking, drug, and experience of sex education(p<.001). Therefore, it is necessary to approach for helping from clinical settings, communities, and school healthcare through effective education and programs for preventing sexual problems, which reflect the factors associated with sex experience among adolescents in future.

Association of Sleep Duration and Depression with Periodontitis in Older People Aged 65 Years and Older

  • Background: Sleep disorder is a precursor to depression, which is one of the psychological factors associated with periodontal disease that, in turn, affects general and periodontal health. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep duration, depression, and periodontitis in older people aged over 65 years. Methods: A total of 2,002 older adults aged 65 years or older were included in the study. Their general and health aspects, including smoking, drinking, diabetes, hypertension, and depression, were investigated. Periodontitis was examined using the Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Data were analyzed through a complex sampling design method. Frequency and crossover analyses were conducted to investigate the relationship between depression and periodontitis. To investigate the effect of depression on periodontitis, a logistic regression analysis was performed. Results: Regarding depression and participants' general characteristics, statistically significant differences were found in sex, economic activity, smoking habit, and CPI (p<0.05). In the presence of depression, the odds ratio for periodontitis was 1.84, and the adjusted odds ratio for age, sex, economic activity, residence type, household income, education level, smoking habit, drinking, hypertension, and diabetes was 1.72, representing a significant difference (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study examined the relationship between depression and periodontitis in older persons and confirmed a significant correlation. As the population of older adults increases, we should pay attention to their mental and oral health as well as systemic diseases. Various programs for the health promotion of older persons need to be implemented to improve the quality of life of older people.

The relationship between body mass index and health behavior, oral health behavior and oral health knowledge in some university student (일부 대학생의 비만도와 건강행동, 구강건강행동 및 구강보건지식과의 관계)

  • Objectives: We would like to manage university student's health factors by researching the connection between BMI and oral health and behavior of university students. And provide basic data by integrating for weight management programs that target overweight people can improve oral health. Methods: Self-evaluation questionnaires were surveyed for 315 students who agreed to participate in the survey, using questionnaires used in the preceding study were modified and complemented. We analyzed the data with frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, chi-square test와 ANOVA, Spearman correlation coefficient by using IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0 (IBM Co., Armonk, NY, USA). The significance level for significance was set at 0.05. Results: People who smoke and alcohol drink have a lower score in their oral health behavior and oral health knowledge than those who do not. There was a significant difference between the BMI group, in the oral health behavior and oral health knowledge scores. BMI and smoking (r=0.230, p<0.001), alcohol drinking (r=0.121, p<0.05) were significant positive correlation. BMI and sleep time (r=-0.127, p<0.05), oral health behaviors (r=-0.133, p<0.001) were significant negative correlation. oral health behaviors and oral health knowledge (r=0.344, p<0.001) were significant positive correlation. Conclusion: Schools and communities will need to be educated about smoking and drinking, while at the same time developing programs that can improve oral health by integrating weight management programs.

Assessing Life Surveys of Medical Students and Need-Based Student Services (의과대학 학생들의 생활실태 및 학생지원 방안)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the results of a study on the psychological state, lifestyle, self-management ability, and academic adaptation of medical students, and to present examples of improvement of a student support center based on the results. A medical school in Daegu has been surveying the living conditions of students every year for 6 years since 2016. More than 60% of medical students experienced depression and more than 70% experienced stress, but these rates have significantly improved over the past 5 years. There were many cases of drinking or smoking to relieve stress, but the frequency of drinking recently decreased substantially. Some students had difficulties in emotional regulation (11.5%) and time management (16.6%), and challenges in planning and self-management increased significantly during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The satisfaction and adaptability of medical students are high, but the number of students who are not satisfied with but negative response rate is 2%-3% in every year. However, satisfaction has significantly increased in tandem with curriculum changes and COVID-19. Based on these data, the counseling system was reorganized to support psychological stability, the medical humanities curriculum was improved, and changes in actual quality of life were induced by developing and operating non-curricular programs. Furthermore, standardized questionnaires will be developed and data from many medical schools will be shared, which is expected to support medical students more effectively.
