  • Drill and blast method has been most widely used in tunnel excavation, after NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method) was introduced in 1983. The NATM method utilized mass of shotcrete to secure the bearing capacity of tunnels. Overbreak defined how much larger the actual excavation was than the planned. When it became larger, more shotcrete was required to fill in it Here, payline fixed allowable overbreak, referring to payable amounts of shotcrete. Since owner was not responsible for shotcrete exceeding payline, it was important to properly establish the standards for payline. Although the standards were provided in 'Poom-sam'(standardized quantity per unit), they did not properly reflect the actual conditions for excavation. Thus, this study reviewed existing domestic and foreign standards for overbreak, and estimated overbreak for each type of support using survey data, and finally provided the improvements on the current standards.

  • Shield TBM is a tunnelling method that has a wider range of applications in the poor ground condition compared to conventional tunnels (Drill and Blast). Currently, a 13.3 m large-diameter slurry shield TBM is preparing for construction to pass under the Han River. Shield TBM is divided into slurry and EPB shield TBM, and management items during construction are different depending on each characteristic. In this paper, the equipment type, origin, application case and trouble case were analyzed for slurry shield TBM, which is mainly constructed in soft ground. In addition, 2D and 3D model tests were conducted on the condition of soil depth for the possibility of slurry leakage into front of the equipment, with appropriate chamber pressure. Based on this paper, it proposed to provide basic and reference data for proper excavation surface pressure and chamber pressure during construction of slurry shield TBM under soft ground conditions, and proposed measures to minimize stability and environmental decline due to slurry ejection.

  • Anomalies and/or fractured grounds not detected by the surface geophysical and geological survey performed during design stage may cause significant problems during tunnel excavation. Many studies on prediction methods of the ground condition ahead of the tunnel face have been conducted and applied in tunneling construction sites, such as tunnel seismic profiling and probe drilling. However, most such applications have focused on the drill and blast tunneling method. Few studies have been conducted for mechanized tunneling because of the limitation in the available space to perform prediction tests. This study aims to predict the ground condition ahead of the tunnel face in TBM tunneling by using an electrical resistivity tomography survey. It compared the characteristics of each electrode array and performed an investigation on in-situ tunnel boring machine TBM construction site environments. Numerical simulations for each electrode array were performed, to determine the proper electrode array to predict anomalies ahead of the tunnel face. The results showed that the modified dipole-dipole array is, compared to other arrays, the best for predicting the location and condition of an anomaly. As the borehole becomes longer, the measured data increase accordingly. Therefore, longer boreholes allow a more accurate prediction of the location and status of anomalies and complex grounds.

  • Construction vibration such as explosive blast, hydraulic breaker, vibratory roller, pile driving noise and so on, injuries in areas around the construction sites. In particular, underwater sound caused by ground vibration is propagation such as structure borne noise. Vibration and underwater sound due to construction activities may cause injury to river, sea or land fish farms near construction sites. The purpose of present study is to measure the sound pressure level and frequency analysis of the underwater noise generated by ground vibration(Blasting, hydraulic crawler drill, hydraulic breaker, vibratory roller). Underwater noise were monitoring by a hydrophone (TC 4013) and recorded, analysis were made using a by software (Prosig).

  • In the applications of rock mechanics or rock engineering including drill and blast, drilling and mechanical excavation, the fracture toughness is an important factor. Several methods have been proposed to measure the fracture toughness of rocks. In this study, wedge splitting test specimen which is prepared with ease and tested under compression loading was used to obtain mode I fracture toughness of rocks. The equation of stress intensity factor through numerical analysis is proposed from the stress state of crack tip considering both vertical and horizontal loads due to the vertical load acting on the wedge. The validity of the wedge splitting test method was confirmed by comparing the mode I fracture toughness values obtained by the GD and SENB test specimens.

  • With increase of the extension of long tunnels and urban tunnelling, demands on the new tunnelling technologies are raised. Currently, drilling and blasting tunnel construction method is mostly used, however, because of sever blast vibration for some occasions, complaints from local residents and rock damages are inevitable. Accordingly, TBM tunnelling is more efficient and effective for such conditions. Nevertheless, tunnel construction costs of TBM cannot compete that of the drill and blasting method in Korea. To overcome such limitations, various TBM equipments and construction technologies are required. In addition, continuous revision of the design standard and specification are required. In this study, a detailed explanation regarding the revised version of TBM section in the tunnel standard specification at 2015 is shown.

  • Jook-Ryung roadway tunnel was constructed by drill-blast after pilot tunnelling by 2 TBMS. nis report analyzes the data for TBM performance in the total length of 7.3 km for the two pilot tunnels. Net penetration rates were recorded as high as 2.3 m/h and 2.0 m/h for the two different directions while degrees of operation were $31.4\%$ and $33.3\%$, respectively. The cutter lives for No.2 tunnel were evaluated $200\~280\;m^3/c$ and around 400 m/set as high as for Meraker 10 km tunnel in Norway. The relationship between net penetration rate and characteristics of rock mass which were obtained by RMR and TSP measurement, coincides with the prior studies. This kind of evaluation is expected to be used to design TBM tunnelling and to help to perform the TBM operation effectively

  • This paper presents the results of reduced scale model tests on the effect of fault zone characteristics on the tunnel deformation behavior. A series of model tests were carried out on deep tunnels considering different fault zone orientations and offset distance. The tunnelling process was simulated in the model tests using compressed air technique. During the tests, the tunnel and ground deformation were mainly monitored while reducing the pressure inside the tunnel and the relationship between the pressure level and the tunnel deformation were established. The results indicate that for a given offset distance the tunnel behavior is influenced the most when the fault zone dips vertically while smallest influence occurs when the fault zone dips 45 degrees.
