This study was carried out to research and develop a shallow green rooftop system which would require low maintenance and therefore could be used for existing rooftops. To achieve these goals, the conceptual model was induced by past studies and the experimental systems were deduced from the conceptual model. On the growth of Sedum sarmentosum grown in these rooftop systems, the effects of artificial substrate type, soil depth, and drainage type were investigated from 3 April to 11 October 2002. Artificial substrates were an alone type and a blending type. The alone type was an artificial substrate formulated by blending crushed porous glass with bark(v/v, 6:4). The blending type was formulated by blending the alone type with loam(v/v, 1:1). Soil depths were 5cm, loom, and 15cm. Drainage types were a reservoir-drainage type and a drainage type. The reservoir-drainage type could keep water and drain excessive water at the same time. The drainage type could drain excessive water but could not keep water. Covering area, total fresh and dry weight, visual quality, and water content per 1g dry matter were measured. All the variables were analyzed by correlation analysis and factor analysis. The results of the study are summarized as follows. The growth increment was higher in the blending type than in the alone type, the highest in loom soil depth and higher in the reservoir-drainage type than in the drainage type. The growth quality was higher in the blending type than in the alone type, the highest in l0cm soil depth, and higher in the drainage type than in the reservoir-drainage type. In consideration of the permissible load on the existing rooftops and the effects of the treatments on the growth increment and quality, the system should adopt the blending type in artificial substrate types, 5~10cm in soil depths, and the drainage type in drainage types. This system will be well-suited to the growth of Sedum sarmentosum, and when the artificial substrate was in field capacity, the weight will be 75~115kg/$m^2$.

In this study, laboratory pull-out tests and finite element modeling are carried out focused on the grid effects of geogrid and the analyses of friction characteristics associated with interaction behaviors of the composite reinforcement composed of geogrid with a superior function in tensile resistance and geotextile with sufficient drainage effects. In addition, drainage effects of the geotextile below geogrid are examined based on the analysis of finite difference numerical modeling. From the present investigation, it is concluded that the geosynthetic composite reinforcement in the weathered granite backfills may possibly be used to achieve effects on both a reduction of deformations and an increase of the tensile resistance, together with drainage effects due to the geotextile.

The effects of drainage system on evapotranspiration and drainage flows are studied. Data from drainage field experiment at Castalia in North Central Branch, Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center were used in this study. A water table management model, ADATP (Agricultural Drainage and Pesticide Transport), which was developed by combining the GLEAMS and the subsurface drainage part of the DRAINMOD model with several modifications, was evaluated and used to predict hydrologic components. The ET is very much affected by the presence of tile drainage system but not significantly affected by the surface drainage system. The combined surface and subsurface drainage system gives the largest total outflow values while the surface drainage only system gives the smallest. Comparisons of model predicted and measured values of surface runoff only, subsurface drainage only, and combined surface runoff and subsurface drainage system are in satisfactory agreement. The model predicted values are within the range of the variations of the observed replications in general. Based on the results of the model evaluation study, it is concluded that ADAPT model can be used to design water table management systems.

The effects of soil percolation rate on $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ emissions were investigated from paddy fields with different drainage systems. Subsurface tile drainage plot of soil percolation rate $11.9mm\;d^{-1}$ and non-subsurface drainage plots of soil percolation rate $7.4mm\;d^{-1}$ and $6.9mm\;d^{-1}$ were designed. The effects of rice straw application were measured at each drainage plots. The subsurface tile drainage plot of soil percolation rate $11.9mm\;d^{-1}$ showed the lower emission amount both of $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ among treatments. In the subsurface tile drainage plot of $11.9mm\;d^{-1}$ percolation rate, 46% of $CH_4$ and 33% of $N_2O$ emission amounts were reduced in comparison of non-subsurface drainage plot of $6.9mm\;d^{-1}$ percolation rate. With rice straw application, the $CH_4$ emission amount was 2.1 times to that from no-applied plot, the $N_2O$ emission amount was not affected by rice straw application.
The objectives of this study wre to investigate the effects of two synthetic pyrethroids, bifenthrin(BF) and permethrin(PM), in runoff and to evaluate the effects of suspended solids (SS) in the transport of pyrethroid along the drainage channel. Monitoring of BF and PM was conducted with the runoffs as well as in sediments existing along the drainage channel at a nursery site located in southern California, USA. This study also suggests Best Management Practices (BMPs) to alleviage the pollution caused by heavy usage of pyrethroid insecticides at nursery sites. Due to a high affinity to solid particles of pyrethroid insecticides, the concentrations of BF and PM were proportional to the SS contents along the drainage channel. This study suggests that alleviation of pyrethroids existing in runoffs could be controlled by the removal of suspended solids in runoffs and potential implications of current drainage channels for mitigation of pesticides associated with runoffs.
The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model has been widely used in hydrology and sediment simulation worldwide. In most cases, the SWAT model is first calibrated with adjustments in model parameters, and then the validation is performed. However, very little study regarding the effects on SWAT estimation of subwatershed delineation was performed. Thus, the SWAT model was applied to the Doam-dam watershed with various threshold values in subwatershed delineation in this study to examine the effects on the number of subwatershed delineated on SWAT estimation. It was found the flow effect of subwatershed delineation is negligible. However there were huge variations in SWAT estimated sediment, T-N, and T-P values with the use of various threshold value in watershed delineation. Sometimes these variations due to watershed delineation are beyond the effects of parameter adjustment in model calibration and validation. The SWAT is a semi-distributed modeling system, thus, the subwatershed characteristics are assumed to be the same for all Hydrologic Response Unit (HRU) within that subwatershed. This assumption leads to variations in the SWAT estimated sediment and nutrient output values. Therefore, it is strongly recommended the SWAT users need to use the HUR specific slope length and slope value in model runs, instead of using the slope and the corresponding slope length of the subawatershed to exclude the effects of the number of subwatershed delineated on the SWAT estimation.

Analyses of subsurface drainage effects of farmland with respect to pipe and envelop material are made by the laboratory experiments using soil box to give basic information for the subsurface drainage system planning and design. Three different diameter PVC perforated pipes and a mesh pipe are used with envelop materials such as sand, rice bran, and crushed stone. Steady state subsurface drainage flow rate increased as envelop material changed from sand to rice bran and crushed stone. This indicates that as the hydraulic conductivity of the envelop material increases, the drainage flow rate increases. On the other hand, for a given envelop material, the mesh pipe which has the largest openning area shows the largest flow rate while small diameter PVC pipes show small flow rates. This tells that as the openning area and pipe diameter increase, the flow rate increases, too. Therefore, selection of pipe and envelop material should be made in accordance with the design drainage flow rate. Unsteady state subsurface drainage flow rate with respect to time differs for different envelop material. In case the sand was used as an envelop material, the small diameter PVC pipes show larger flow rates than the large diameter PVC pipe and mesh pipe. When the rice bran was used, the mesh pipe shows the largest flow rate, while small diameter pipes show smaller flow rates. In case the crushed stone was used as an envelop material, the large diameter PVC pipe and mesh pipe show larger flow rates, while small diameter pipes show a little bit smaller flow rates. However, the variation of flow rates among different pipes is the smallest when the crushed stone is used. The flow rate curve with respect to the pipe changes little for the crushed stone envelop which has a large hydraulic conductivity, while that changes much for the sand and rice bran envelops. However, it is difficult to draw a consistent relationship between the drainage flow rate and pipe for all the envelop materials. Since the subsurface drainage experiments are made only under the restricted laboratory condition in this study, further study including field experiment is required.

Contamination in the drainage channels and creeks with pesticides used in agriculture is of a major concern in many countries. In this study the stream pesticide model RIVWQ (chemical transport model for riverine environments) was assessed for its applicability in simulating pesticide fate in drainage channels. The model was successfully calibrated against field data collected on flows and pesticide concentrations for a drainage channel from a small catchment in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area of southwestern New South Wales. The effects of different pesticide loading scenarios from farm fields on channel water quality were analysed by the calibrated model. The model simulated the flow rates and the pesticide concentrations in the drainage channel well. The results of the model simulation suggest that the RIVWQ model can be effectively used for predicting pesticide fate in the drainage channels and exposure assessment of pesticide in the agricultural environment.

The MDDA (Modified Dynamic Drainage Analyzer) was developed to evaluate the drainage characteristics on paper machine. The initial forming vacuum velocity was decreased with the increase of stock consistency and there were no significant effects of the applied vac-uum. On the other hand the initial forming drainage velocity was rapidly decreased with the increase of stock consistency above the 0.35 bar of applied vacuum. The final drainage time and wet web permeability showed similar trends under 0.075% consistency but increased rapidly at the higher consistencies. SFR(Specific Filtration Resistance) and drainage obtained for different vacuum level applied and deposited weights measured by using MDDA showed the linear relationship.
