Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV's) provide an important means for collecting detailed scientific information from the ocean depths. The hull resistance of an AUV is an important factor in determining the power requirements and range of the vehicle. This paper describes a design method that uses Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to determine the hull resistance of an AUV under development. The CFD results reveal the distribution of the hydrodynamic values (velocity, pressure, etc.) of an AUV with a ducted propeller. This paper also discusses the optimization of the AUV hull profile to reduce the total resistance. This paper demonstrates that shape optimization in a conceptual design is possible by using a commercial CFD package. Optimum design work to minimize the drag force of an AUV was carried out, for a given object function and constraints.

The three-dimensional unsteady compressible Euler equation solver with ALE, CFD code, PAM-FLOW based on FEM method has been applied to analyze the flow field around the high speed train which is entering into a channel. From the present study, the pressure and flow transients were calculated and analyzed. The generation of compression wave was observed ahead of train and the high pressure in the gap between the train and the tunnel was also found due to the blockage effects. It was found that abrupt fluctuation in pressure exists in the region from train nose to shoulder of train corresponding to 10% of total length of train during tunnel entry. Computed time history of aerodynamic forces of train during tunnel entry show that drag coefficient rapidly rises and saturates at about non-dimensional time 0.31. The total increase of drag coefficient before and after tunnel entry is about 1.1%. Transient profile of lift force shows similar pattern to drag coefficient except abrupt drop after saturation and lift force in the tunnel increases 0.08% more than that before tunnel entry.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) provide a useful means of collecting detailed oceano-graphic information. The hull resistance of an AUV is an important factor in determining the power requirements and range of the vehicle. This paper describes a procedure using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for determining the hull resistance of an AUV under development, for a given propeller rotation speed and within a given range of AUV velocities. The CFD analysis results reveal the distribution of the hydrodynamic values (velocity, pressure, etc.) around the AUV hull and its ducted propeller. The paper then proceeds to present a methodology for optimizing the AUV profile in order to reduce the total resistance. This paper demonstrates that shape optimization of conceptual designs is possible using the commercial CFD package contained in Ansys$^{TM}$. The optimum design to minimize the drag force of the AUV was identified for a given object function and a set of constrained design parameters.

To remove insoluble fission products, which could possibly cause reactor instability and significantly reduce heat transfer efficiency from primary system of molten salt reactor, a helium bubbling method is employed into a passive molten salt fast reactor. In this regard, two-phase flow behavior of molten salt and helium bubbles was investigated experimentally because the helium bubbles highly affect the circulation performance of working fluid owing to an additional drag force. As the helium flow rate is controlled, the change of key thermal-hydraulic parameters was analyzed through a two-phase experiment. Simultaneously, to assess the applicability of numerical model for the analysis of two-phase flow behavior, the numerical calculation was performed using the OpenFOAM 9.0 code. The accuracy of the numerical analysis code was evaluated by comparing it with the experimental data. Generally, numerical results showed a good agreement with the experiment. However, at the high helium injection rates, the prediction capability for void fraction of helium bubbles was relatively low. This study suggests that the multiphaseEulerFoam solver in OpenFOAM code is effective for predicting the helium bubbling but there exists a room for further improvement by incorporating the appropriate drag flux model and the population balance equation.
This paper investigates the resistance performance of drag anchors used for aqua farms installed in southwestern offshore wind farms in Korea. These anchors have been employed for a long time without any quantitative evaluation. Experimental campaigns were performed at the target site and the results were used to validate the numerical model by changing the penetration depths in the uniformly distributed seabed (i.e., flat). Based on the validated model with good agreement with the experiments (ARE 1.8 %), the resistance of the anchor with different pullout angles was thoroughly examined. It is worth noting that the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) technique was applied to account for the large deformation of the anchor; Eulerian for the seabed and Lagrangian for the structure. The numerical results indicated that the pullout resistance is vulnerable to horizontal inclined force rather than vertical inclination, implying that the optimum performance is ideally expected to be 0-degree force applied.
A number of passive aerodynamic drag reduction methods were applied separately and then in different combinations on an intercity bus model, through wind tunnel studies on a 1:20 scale model of a Mercedes Benz Tourismo 15 RHD intercity bus. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling was also conducted in parallel to assist with flow visualisation. The commercial CFD package $CFX^{TM}$ was used. It has been found that dramatic reductions in coefficient of drag ($C_D$) of up to 70% can be achieved on the model using tapered and rounded top and side leading edges, and a truncated rear boat-tail. The curved front section allows the airflow to adhere to the bus surfaces for the full length of the vehicle, while the boat-tails reduce the size of the low pressure region at the base of the bus and more importantly, additional pressure recovery occurs and the base pressures rise, reducing drag. It is found that the CFD results show remarkable agreement with experimental results, both in the magnitude of the force coefficients as well as in their trends. An analysis shows that such a reduction in aerodynamic drag could lead to a significant 28% reduction in fuel consumption for a typical bus on intercity or interstate operation. This could translate to a massive dollar savings as well as significant emissions reductions across a fleet. On road tests are recommended.
The turbulent flow resistance of water solution with polymer is reduced as compared with that of pure water. This effects is named th drag reduction and offers the significant reduction of the pumping power and the energy consumption. But the intense shear forces and the high temperature experienced by the polymer solution when passing through the pipes cause the degradation a loss of drag reduction effectiveness. Especially, the degradation behavior is found to be strongly dependent on temperature. This mechanical and thermal degradation can be avoided by adding materials such as surfactant to the polymer solution, which enhance the bonding force between molecules. In the present study, Copolymer and SDS were utilized and they were mixed in 10 different mixture ratios, while total concentration was fixed as 100wppm. Degradation of Copolymer-SDS mixture solutions was investigated experimentally in closed loop at the temperature of $10^{\circ}C\; and\; 80^{\circ}C$ with various flow average velocities of 1.5 m/sec, 3.0m/sec, and 4.5m/sec. Degradation characteristics of polymer solution without surfactant show a radical loss of drag reduction effectiveness at high temperature. Degradation alleviation ability of surfactant is especially effective at high temperature. Consequently, this results show that the addition of surfactant to the polymer solution can control unfavorable degradation phenomena for high temperature systems.
Control of drag force on a circular cylinder using multiple detached splitter plates is numerically studied for laminar flow Two splitter plates with the same length as the cylinder diameter (d) are placed horizontally in the upstream of the cylinder and in the near-wake region, respectively. Their positions are described by the gap ratios (G$_1$/d, G$_2$/d), where G$_1$ represents the gap between the cylinder stagnation point and the rear edge of the upstream splitter plate, and G$_2$ represents the gap between the cylinder base point and the leading edge of the rear splitter plate. The drag varies with the two gap ratios; it has the minimum value at a certain set of gap ratios for each Reynolds number The upstream splitter plate decreases the stagnation pressure, while the rear splitter plate increases the base pressure by suppressing vortex shedding. This combined effect causes a significant drag reduction on the cylinder Particularly, the drag sharply increases past an optimum G$_2$/d; this seems to be related to a sudden change in bubble size in the wake region.
The Characteristics of the drag reduction of a square prism having a detached splitter plate at the wake side was investigated by measuring of fluid force on the square prism and by visualization of the field using PIV. The experimental parameters were the width ratios(H/B=0.5~1.5) of splitters to the prism width and the gap ratios (G/B=0~2) between the prism and the splitter plate. The drag reduction rate was increased with H/B, and was increased and decreased with G/B. The maximum drag reduction rate was represented by 24.2% at H/B=1.5 and G/B=0.5. The two vortices were generated by the splitter plate at the wake region of the prism. The direction of the vortex was clockwise at the upside of the splitter plate and counterclockwise at the downside.
