Laminar flows over a cube and a cuboid (cube extended in the streamwise direction) are numerically investigated for the Reynolds numbers between 50 and 350. First, vortical structures behind a cube and lift characteristics are scrutinized in order to understand the variation in vortex shedding characteristics with respect to the Reynolds number. As the Reynolds number increases, the flow over a cube experiences the steady planar-symmetric, unsteady planar-symmetric, and unsteady asymmetric flows. Similar to the sphere wake, the planar-symmetric flow over a cube can be divided into two different regimes: single-frequency regime and multiple-frequency regime. The former has a single frequency due to regular shedding of vortices with the same strength in time, while the latter has multiple frequency components due to temporal variation in the strength of shed vortices. Second, the effect of the length-to-height ratio of the cuboid on the flow characteristics is investigated for the Reynolds number of 270, at which planar-symmetric vortex shedding takes place behind a cube. With the ratio smaller than one, the flow over the cuboid becomes unsteady asymmetric flow, whereas it becomes steady flow for the ratios greater than one. With increasing the ratio, the drag coefficient first decreases and then increases. This feature is related to the flow reattachment on the side faces of the cuboid.

Pumping performances of a helical molecular drag dump(MDP) and of a radial MDPs are numerically analyzed by using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. A helical- and radial-MDP have rotating pumping channels cut on a cylinder and on a disk, respectively. For a helical MDP, the present results agree quantitatively with the previously known numerical results. For radial MDPs, both of the Type 1 (having pumping channels cut on the stationary disk) and of the Type 2 (having pumping channels cut on the rotating disk) are analyzed to predict their performances for various parameters, i.e., the radius of curvature center of the channel wall, the depth of the channel, the clearance between housing and disk, and the rotating speed. The results show that the performance of the Type 2 is superior to that of the Type 1, and that for all types the pumping efficiency decreases as the clearance increases. Also, the radial type MDP has larger leakage losses in the direction of pumping channel than does the helical one.
Laminar flow over a cube near a plane wall is numerically investigated in order to understand the effects of the cube-wall gap on the flow characteristics as well as the drag and lift coefficients. The main focus is placed on the three-dimensional vortical structures and its relation to the lift force applied on the cube. Numerical simulations are performed for the Reynolds numbers between 100 and 300, covering several different flow regimes. Without a wall nearby, the flow at Re=100 is planar symmetric with no vortical structure in the wake. However, when the wall is located close to the cube, a pair of streamwise vortices is induced behind the cube. At Re=250, the wall strengthens the existing streamwise vortices and elongates them in the streamwise direction. As a result, the lift coefficients at Re=100 and 250 increase as the cube-wall gap decreases. On the other hand, without a wall, vortex shedding takes place at Re=300 in the form of a hairpin vortex whose strength changes in time. The head of hairpin vortex or loop vortex, which is closely related to the lift force, seems to disappear due to the nearby wall. Therefore, unlike at Re=100 and 250, the lift coefficient tends to decrease more or less as the cube approaches the wall.

A numerical method is presented which can solve the steady flow and heat transfer from a rotating and heated circular cylinder in a uniform flow for a range of Reynolds number form 5 to 100. The steady response of the flow and heat transfer is simulated for various spin parameter. The effects on the flow field and heat transfer characteristics known as lift, drag and heat transfer coefficient are analyzed and the streamlines, velocity vectors, vorticity, temperature distributions around it were scrutinized numerically. As spin parameter increases the region of separation vortex becomes smaller than upper one and the lower region will vanish. The lift force, a large part is due to the pressure force, increases as the Reynolds number and it increases linearly as spin parameter increases. The pressure coefficient changes rapidly with spin parameter on the lower surface of the cylinder and the vorticity is sensitive to the spin parameter near separation region. As spin parameter increases the maximum heat coefficient and the thin thermal layer on front region are moved to direction of rotation. However, with balance between the local increase and decrease, the overal heat transfer coefficient is almost unaffected by rotation.

We conducted a comprehensive review on artificial reefs (ARs) including seaweed reefs for marine afforestation in relation to their development and research from 1972 to 2016, and then systematically analyzed their current a state-of-the-art and practice. From the review, the followings conclusions are made. First, the objectives of AR projects in the Southeast Asia can be classified into three, i.e. protection and increase of fishery resources, local community's profits, and ecological tourism. Second, fish gathering effects by ARs can be determined in terms of wake region or wake length that tends to increase with the K-C (Keulegan-Carpenter) number. Third, ARs are desirable to deploy across a direction of the main flow but it is essential to keep the deployment interval two to four times the length of a single reef. Fourth, stability of ARs depends on how to evaluate drag coefficient, and Morison formula turns out to be practical. Fifth, local scours of ARs are likely to occur due to a downward flow around the center of the front surface. Finally, it is natural for ARs to positively contribute to the marine ecosystem but it is imperative to develop an evaluation method for the effects of ARs on the marine ecosystem.
Foraging behaviour of false dace, Pseudorasbora parva, was investigated in water flowing at various velocities with the existence of a cavity for rest. The pursuit comprised three succeeding processes such as, approaching, chasing and attacking. Angles between the fish body and the water flow direction and swimming speeds increased in the latter stages of approaching, chasing and attacking. All pursuit angles, swimming speeds and distances increased with flow velocity and peaked at the flow velocity of 7 cm/sec. At higher velocities, however, the fish avoided the use of much energy against the large drag force. The probability of capture and the feeding rate steadily decreased with increasing flow velocity. Under the fast flow, the fish adjusted their swimming speed to get the optimum velocity relative to the flowing water for the energetic budget. Fish spent more time in the cavity as flow velocity increased to avoid the energy expenditure necessitated by the high velocity.
Direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of spatially developing turbulent boundary layers (TBLs) over two-dimensional (2-D) and rod and three-dimensional (3-D) cube rough walls were performed to investigate the effects of streamwise spacing on the properties of the TBL The 2-D and 3-D roughness were periodically arranged in the downstream direction with pitches of px/k=2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10 and for the cube, the spanwise spacing is fixed to pz/k=2 with staggered array, where px and pz are the streamwise and spanwise spacings of the roughness and k is the roughness height. Inspection of the Reynolds stresses showed that except for px/k=2 and 3 over the 2-D rough walls, the effects of the surface roughness extend to the outer layer over the 2-D and 3-D rough walls and the magnitude of the Reynolds shear stress in the outer layer is increased with proportion to px/k. However, such results are contrary to the trends of form drag, roughness junction and roughness length against px/k, which showed the maximum values at px/k=8 and 4 over the 2-D and 3-D rough walls respectively.
This paper is concerned with the viscous interaction between rotor and stator. The viscous interaction is caused by wakes from upstream blades. The rotor cascade in the experiment was composed with five blades, and cylinders were placed to make the stator wakes and their locations were about 50 percent upstream of blade chord. The locations of cylinders were varied in the direction of cascade axis with 0, 12.5, 25, 50, and 75 percent of pitch length. The static pressure distributions on the blade surfaces and the velocity distributions in the cascade flow were measured. From the experimental result it was found that the value of velocity defect by a cylinder wake might vary depending on the wake position within the cascade but the value at the cascade exit approached to some constant value regardless of the difference of wake locus. The momentum defect at the downstream from the cascade and the pressure distribution on the blade surfaces showed that the wake flowing near the blade surfaces caused the decrease of lift and the increase of drag regardless of the disappearance of flow separation.

This paper describes aerodynamic characteristics of an Archimedes spiral wind turbine with various angles of attack. The range of angles was controlled from $-30^{\circ}$ (clockwise) to $+30^{\circ}$ (clockwise). The rotating speed of wind turbine at the same angle of attack in both directions was different. The reason why the-maximum rotational speed was observed at $15^{\circ}$ in clockwise direction can be explained based on angular momentum conservation. Quantitative flow visualization around Archimedes wind turbine blade was carried out between $-15^{\circ}$ (clockwise) and $+15^{\circ}$ (counter clockwise) using high resolution PIV method. The relationship between drag force and rotating speeds was discussed. From these results, optimum design on yawing system of Archimedes spiral wind turbine may provide high efficiency on small wind power system.

In this paper, effects of free surface on viscous flow is investigated. Continuity equation coupled with Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically by using an artificial compressibility method[1, 2]. The body-fitted generalized curvilinear coordinate system is employed to deal with arbitrary body shape. The IAF scheme with finite difference method is used to solve the equations, and a diagonal algorithm is applied to time-varying Jacobian matrices for the computational economics. Free surface shape is obtained by applying zero pressure condition to still water surface at each time step. A numerical test is made for larminar flow around a circular cylinder vertically piercing the free surface. Computed flow patterns are largely affected by the existance of free surface in low Reynolds number flows treated in this paper. Free surface causes viscous pressure drag to vary much in depth direction in accordance with the variations of flow pattern.
