A combined experimental and numerical study has been conducted to investigate the downstream interaction between simulated SNG-air premixed flames in fuel composition of 91% $CH_4$ + 6% $C_3H_8$ + 3% $H_2$. In this study, the effects of fuel molar concentration(lean-rich) and strain rate($a_g$) were major parameters. A main focus is to investigate flames behavior and chemical interaction at flames downstream. The numerical results were calculated by OPPDIF application. The reaction mechanism adopted was USC-II model including C3 reaction.

Downstream interactions between lean premixed flames with mutually different fuels of syngas and $CH_4$ have been numerically investigated particularly on and near lean extinction limits. The interaction characteristics between lean premixed (50% $H_2$ + 50% CO)-air and $CH_4$-air flames were shown to be quite different from those between the same hydrocarbon flames. The lean extinction boundaries were of slanted shape, thereby implying strong interactions. The weaker flames had negative flame speeds on the upper extinction boundaries, whereas the weaker flame speeds on the lower extinction boundaries were both negative and positive. The results also showed that the flame interaction characteristics did not follow the general tendency with the dependency of Lewis number in downstream interactions between the same hydrocarbon flames. Importance of chemical interaction in flame characteristics is discussed in the downstream interactions between lean premixed (50% $H_2$ + 50% CO)-air and $CH_4$-air flames.
Numerical study was conducted to clarify effects of added $CO_2$ for the downstream interaction between $H_2$-air and CO-air premixed flames in counterflow configuration. The reaction mechanism adopted was Davis model which had been known to be well in agreement with reliable experimental data. The results showed that both lean and rich flammable limits were reduced. The most discernible difference between the two with and without having $CO_2$ addition into $H_2$-air and CO-air premixtures was two flammable islands for the former and one island for the latter at high strain flame conditions. Even a small amount of $H_2$, in which $H_2$-air premixed flame cannot be sustained by itself, participates in CO oxidation, thereby altering the CO-oxidation reaction path from the main reaction route $CO+O_2{\rightarrow}CO_2+O$ with a very long chemical time in CO-air flame to the (H, O, OH)-related reaction routes including $CO+OH{\rightarrow}CO_2+H$ with relatively short chemical times. This intrinsic nature alters flame stability maps appreciably. The results also showed that chemical effects of added $CO_2$ suppressed flame stabilization. Particularly this phenomenon was appreciable at flame conditions which lean and rich extinction boundary was merged. The detailed discussion of chemical effects of added $CO_2$ was addressed to the present downstream interaction.

The regional-scale transient groundwater-river interaction model is developed to gain a better understanding of the regional-scale relationships and interactions between groundwater and river system and quantify the residual river flow after groundwater abstraction from the aquifers with climate variability in the Waimea Plains, New Zealand. The effect of groundwater abstraction and climate variability on river flows is evaluated by calculating river flows at the downstream area for three different drought years (a 1 in 10 drought year, 1 in 20 drought year, and 1 in 24 drought year) and an average year with metered water abstraction data. The effect of future water demand (50 year projection) on river flows is also evaluated. A significant increase in the occurrence of zero flow, or very low flow of 100 L/sec at the downstream area is predicted due to large groundwater abstraction increase with climate variability. Modeling results shows the necessity of establishing dynamic cutback scenarios of water usage to users over the period of drought conditions considering different climate variability from current allocation limit to reduce the occurrence of low flow conditions at the downstream area.
Experimental and numerical studies were conducted to investigate flame behaviors near flammable limits for downstream-interacting SNG-air premixed flames in a counter-flow configuration. The SNG fuel consisted of a methane, a propane, and a hydrogen with volumetric ratios of 91, 6, and 3%, respectively. The most appropriate priority for some reliable reaction mechanisms examined was given to the mechanism of UC San diego via comparison of lean extinction limits attained numerically with experimental ones. Flame stability map was presented with a functional dependencies of lower and upper methane concentrations in terms of global strain rate. The results show that, at the global strain rate of $30s^{-1}$, lean extinction boundary is slanted while rich extinction one is relatively less inclined because of the dependency of such extinction boundary shapes on deficient reactant Lewis number governed by methane mainly. Further increase of global strain rate forces both extinction boundaries to be more slanted and to be shrunk, resulting in an island of extinction boundary and subsequently one flame extinction limit. Extinction mechanisms for lean and rich, symmetric and asymmetric extinction boundary were identified and discussed via heat losses and chemical interaction.
Flow through compliant tubes with linear taper in wall thickness is numerically simulated by finite element analysis. Two models are examined: a planar two-dimensional channel, and an axisymmetric tube. For verification of the numerical method, flow through a compliant stenotic vessel is simulated and compared to existing experimental data. Computational results for an axisymmetric tube show that as cross-sectional area falls with a reduction in downstream pressure, flow rate increases and reaches a maximum when the speed index (mean velocity divided by wave speed) is near unity at the point of minimum cross-section area, indicative of wave speed flow limitation or "choking" (flow speed equals wave speed) in previous one-dimensional studies. For further reductions in downstream pressure, flow rate decreases. Cross-sectional narrowing is significant but localized. When the ratio of downstream-to-upstream wall thickness is ${\le}$ 2 the area throat is located near the downstream end; as wall taper is increased to ${\ge}$ 3 the constriction moves to the upstream end of the tube. In the planar two-dimensional channel, area reduction and flow limitation are also observed when outlet pressure is decreased. In contrast to the axisymmetric case, however, the elastic wall in the two-dimensional channel forms a smooth concave surface with the area throat located near the mid-point of the elastic wall. Though flow rate reaches a maximum and then falls, the flow does not appear to be choked.
The effect of vortex impingement on the fluid dynamics around a cylinder submerged in the wake of another of different diameters is numerically investigated at a Reynolds number Re = 200. While the diameter (D) of the downstream cylinder is fixed, impinging vortices are produced from the upstream cylinder diameter (d) varied as d/D = 0.24, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0, with a spacing ratio L=5.5d, where L is the distance between the center of the upstream cylinder to the front stagnation point of the downstream cylinder. Two-dimensional simulations are carried out using the finite volume method. Fluid forces acting on the two cylinders are correlated with impinging vortices, vortex shedding, and wake structure. Different facets of wake formation, wake structure, and flow separation and their connections to fluid forces are discussed.

An experimental investigation has been made to study the interaction between and incident oblique shock wave and an unstabilized turbulent boundary layer on a solid surface downstream of a porous surface with air injection through the porous surface. The boundary layer upstream of the interaction is unstabilized by the injection and provokes a shock wave which eventually interacts with the unstabilized boundary layer after reflecting from the upper wall of the test section. Three cases having diferent upstream Mach numbers and different shock strengthes are studied. According to the level of the unstabilization, two cases are of attached boundary layers and the other one is of a separated boundary layer. The result shows that the reflected wavey system is composed of the compression wave, expansion wave fan, and recompression wave like the ordinary interaction while the separated boundary layer strengthens the reflected expansion waves. The interactions of the attached boundary layers show a similar tendency of the upstream wall pressure distribution as that of the ordinary interacton but the pressure rise rather decays in the downstream region. In case of the separated boundary layer, the wall pressure continues to rise in the downstream as opposed ot the former cases. This indicates that the interaction region spreads out widely adn the viscous effect of the separated boundary layer smoothens the abrupt pressure increase due to the shock inpingement.

Passive control of the shock wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction utilizing slotted plates and a porous plate over a cavity has been carried out. Effect of various slot configurations on the characteristics of the interaction has been observed. Pitot/wall surface pressure distributions and flow visualizations including Schlieren images, kerosene-lampblack tracings and interference fringe patterns over a thin oil-film have been obtained at the downstream of the shock interactions. For the streamwise-slot configuration, a local higher pitot pressure was noticed at the downstream of the interaction as compared with the case of no control, however, not much improvement in pitot pressure was observed for the spanwise-slot configuration.
