  • Doubly Fed Induction Generator(DFIG) systems occupy the largest proportion of worldwide wind energy generation market. DFIG systems are very sensitive to grid disturbances especially to voltage dips due to the structure of the stator connected to grid. In the past, when a grid fault occurs generators are separated from grid(trip method) in order to protect the systems. Nowadays, due to the growing penetration level of wind power, many countries have made some requirements that wind turbines are required to have Low Voltage Ride Through(LVRT) capability during grid faults. In this paper, a flux tracking LVRT control strategy based on system modeling equations is proposed. The validity of the proposed strategy is verified through computer simulations.

  • This paper proposes a power smoothing scheme of a doubly-fed induction generator. The proposed scheme aims to mitigate system frequency deviation caused by the variable wind. To achieve this, a dynamic droop loop is used and its gain changes with rate of change of frequency so that it can release a large amount of kinetic energy at the initial stage of a frequency event. The performance of the proposed scheme was investigated in a model system with high wind penetration using EMTP-RV simulator. The test results indicate that the scheme can smooth the output power by absorbing or releasing the output power under a varying wind condition.

  • This paper investigates control algorithms for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) with back-to-back converter in medium-voltage wind power system under unbalanced grid conditions. Operation of DFIG under unbalanced grid conditions causes several problems such as overcurrent, unbalanced currents, active power pulsation and torque pulsation. Three different control algorithms to compensate for the unbalanced conditions have been investigated with respect to four performance factors; fault ride-through capability, efficiency, harmonic distortions and torque pulsation. The control algorithm having zero amplitude of negative sequence current shows the most cost-effective performance concerning fault ride-through capability and efficiency. The control algorithm for nullifying the oscillating component of the instantaneous active power generates least harmonic distortions. Combination of these two control algorithms depending on the operating requirements presents most optimized performance factors under the generalized unbalanced operating conditions.

  • This paper proposes a reactive current assignment and control strategy for a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind-turbine generation system under generic grid voltage sag or swell conditions. The system's active and reactive power constrains during grid faults are investigated with both the grid- and rotor-side convertors (GSC and RSC) maximum ampere limits considered. To meet the latest grid codes, especially the low- and high-voltage ride-through (LVRT and HVRT) requirements, an adaptive reactive current control scheme is investigated. In addition, a torque-oscillation suppression technique is designed to reduce the mechanism stress on turbine systems caused by intensive voltage variations. Simulation and experiment studies demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control scheme to enhance the fault ride-through (FRT) capability of DFIG-based wind turbines during violent changes in grid voltage.

  • This paper presents an effective rotor current controller for variable-speed stand-alone doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) systems feeding an unbalanced three-phase load. The proposed current controller is developed based on proportional plus two resonant regulators, which are tuned at the positive and negative slip frequencies and implemented in the rotor reference frame without decomposing the positive and negative sequence components of the measured rotor current. In addition, the behavior of the proposed controller is examined in terms of control performance and stability with respect to rotor speed variations, i.e., slip frequency variations. Simulations and experimental results are shown to validate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed control method.

  • As the number of wind turbines installed increase, the power from wind energy starts to replace conventional generation units and its influence on power system can not be neglected. Because of the intermittent nature of wind resource, the output power of wind turbine fluctuates according to wind speed variation. In this point of view, it is necessary for wind turbines to be equipped with power regulation ability. The doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) is one of the main techniques used in variable speed wind turbines. This thesis focuses on the development of modified control scheme of DFIG to regulate output power. The proposed control scheme achieves active power output regulation so as to stabilize the power system.

  • Upon detecting a frequency event in a power system, the stepwise inertial control (SIC) of a wind turbine generator (WTG) instantly increases the power output for a preset period so as to arrest the frequency drop. Afterwards, SIC rapidly reduces the WTG output to avert over-deceleration (OD). However, such a rapid output reduction may act as a power deficit in the power system, and thereby cause a second frequency dip. In this paper, a hybrid reference function for the stable SIC of a doubly-fed induction generator is proposed to prevent OD while improving the frequency nadir (FN). To achieve this objective, a reference function is separately defined prior to and after the FN. In order to improve the FN when an event is detected, the reference is instantly increased by a constant and then maintained until the FN. This constant is determined by considering the power margin and available kinetic energy. To prevent OD, the reference decays with the rotor speed after the FN. The performance of the proposed scheme was validated under various wind speed conditions and wind power penetration levels using an EMTP-RV simulator. The results clearly demonstrate that the scheme successfully prevents OD while improving the FN at different wind conditions and wind power penetration levels. Furthermore, the scheme is adaptive to the size of a frequency event.

  • An enhanced control strategy for variable-speed unbalanced stand-alone doubly-fed induction generator-based wind energy conversion systems is proposed in this paper. The control scheme is applied to the rotor-side converter to eliminate stator voltage imbalance. The proposed current controller is developed based on the proportional-resonant regulator, which is implemented in the stator stationary reference frame. The resonant controller is tuned at the stator synchronous frequency to achieve zero steady-state errors in rotor currents without decomposing the positive and negative sequence components. The computational complexity of the proposed control algorithm is greatly simplified, and control performance is significantly improved. Finally, simulations and experimental results are presented to verify the feasibility and the robustness of the proposed control scheme.

  • The short circuit ratio (SCR) of a given grid is able to show the stability of the system in the case of unwanted elements, such as wind turbulence. This paper presents the simulation of a model of the doubly fed induction generator in the simulation software PSCAD/EMTDC. This model has been used to study flicker during continuous operation and the effect of SCR and grid impedance angle on flicker emission. Simulation results show that compensation of the stator reactive power is an effective method to considerably reduce the flicker levels, irrespective of the grid conditions.
