  • The Superior Shoulder Suspensory complex (SSSC) maintains a normal stable relationship between the upper extremity and the axial skeleton. Traumatic double disruptions of the SSSC frequently create an unstable anatomic situation and is difficult-to-treat. When this double disruption is managed conservatively, significant displacement can occur at either or both sites and result in long-term problems and functional disabilities. Therefore surgical management is generally necessary. The authors experienced two cases of double disruptions of the SSSC treated with arthroscopic surgery & and reported good results.

  • One of the principal components of the KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) tokamak structure is the vacuum vessel, which acts as the high vacuum boundary for the plasma and also provides the structural support for internal components. Hyundai Heavy Industries Inc. has performed the engineering design of the vacuum vessel. Here the overall configuration of the KSTAR vacuum vessel was briefly described and then the design methodology and the analysis results were presented. The vacuum vessel consists of double walls, several ports, leaf spring style supports. Double walls are separated by reinforcing ribs and filled with baking/shielding water. The overall external dimensions of the main body are 3.39 m high, 1.11 m inner radius, 2.99 m outer radius, and made of SA240-316LN. The vacuum vessel was designed to be capable of achieving the base pressure of $1\times10^{-8}$ Torr, and also to be structurally capable of sustaining the vacuum pressure, the electromagnetic and thermal loads during plasma disruption and bakeout, respectively. The vacuum vessel will be baked out maximum $150^{\circ}C$ by hot pressurized water through the channels formed between double walls and the reinforcing ribs. A 3-D temperature distribution and the resulting thermal loads in the vessel were calculated during bakeout. It was found that the vacuum vessel and its supports were structurally rigid based on the thermal stress analysis. The maximum electromagnetic loads on the vacuum vessel induced by eddy and halo currents resulting from the engineering plasma radial and vertical disruption scenarios have been estimated. The stress analyses have been performed based on these electromagnetic loads and the resulting stresses at he critical locations of the vacuum vessel were within the allowable stresses.

  • From 1985 through Oct. 1988, we have experienced 5 cases of Aorto-Coronary Bypass Surgery [ACBS] and 3 cases of Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Anogioplasty [PTCA]under the diagnosis of unstable angina. There were 6 males and 2 females who ranged from 48 to 70 years old. Almost all patients had a evidence of hypertension & hyperlipidemia. Two patients showed old myocardial infarction and remaining patients showed myocardial ischemia on resting state. The patterns of involvement of coronary artery disease were single vessel disease [4 cases], double vessel disease [3 cases], Triple vessel disease [1 case]. Among 5 cases of ACBS, double bypass graft was in 3 cases and single bypass graft was in 2 cases. Mode of anastomosis were all individual anastomosis, using Saphenous vein graft. Postoperative complications were perioperative myocardial infarction [2 cases], postoperative bleeding [1 case], leg wound disruption [1 case]. Perioperative myocardial infarction cases didn*t survive. In cases of PTCA, there were no complications. Follow up periods were ranged from 1 month to 25 months. All survived cases were asymptomatic except one case, who showed Functional Class II.

  • Pseudomonas putida JM37 metabolized glyoxylate at a specific rate of 55 g/g dry biomass/day. In order to investigate their role, three genes encoding enzymes that are potentially involved in the conversion of glyoxylate were disrupted; namely, tartronate semialdehyde synthase (gcl), malate synthase (glcB), and isocitrate lyase (aceA). Strains with transposon insertion in either of these genes were isolated from a 50,000 clone library employing a PCR-guided enrichment strategy. In addition, all three double mutants were constructed via targeted insertion of a knock-out plasmid. Neither mutation of gcl, glcB, and aceA nor any of the respective double mutations influenced glyoxylic acid conversion, indicating that P. putida JM37 may possess other enzymes and pathways for glyoxylate metabolism.

  • To identify the bridge information from the response of test vehicles passing on it (also known as the indirect approach) has aroused the interest of many researchers thanks to its economy, easy implementation and less disruption to traffic. The surface roughness of bridge remains an obstacle for such method as it contaminates the vehicle response severely and thereby renders many vehicle-response-based bridge identification methods ineffective. This study aims to eliminate such effect with the responses of two different test vehicles. The proposed method can estimate the surface profile of a bridge based on the acceleration data of the vehicles running on the bridge successively, and obtain the normalized contact point response, which proves to be relatively immune to surface roughness. The frequencies and mode shapes of bridge can be further extracted from the normalized contact point acceleration with spectral analysis and Hilbert transform. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified numerically with a three-span continuous bridge. The influence of measurement noise is also examined.

  • The result of valve failure with the lonescu-Shiley pericardial xenograft was presented with the review of current knowledge. This study reviewed 557 patients, who underwent total of 683 lonescu-Shiley pericardial valve replacement from 1979 to 1985 at Seoul National University Hospital. There were 357 patients who had mitral valve replacement, 73 with aortic valve and 127 with double valve replacement. There were 35 operative deaths. The survivors were followed at OPD. There were 32 patients who had prosthetic valve failure, whose ages ranged from 11 to 58 years [mean 27.8] and their postop interval was 56 ~ 22 months [range; 6-87] The causes of valve failure are prosthetic valve endocarditis in 14, primary disruption or calcification in 13, paravalvular leakage in 4, and others in 2 patients. Redo valve replacement was done in 12 patients after a mean interval of 50 * 20 months. [range; 6-79 months] Actuarial analysis of late results indicates actuarial freedom from endocarditis at 6 year is 87.9 ~ 6.8%, and actuarial freedom from primary disruption or calcification or paravalvular leakage at 5 year is 84.4 * 2.3%. In this series, however, valve failure due to thrombosis is not included.

  • The repair of manhole raise has been caused much construction times and disruption of traffic flow, serious environmental pollution from crushed construction wastes, and budget waste due to the repeated repair construction works. In order to overcome such problems, we have developed the new manhole repairing composite structures by using a glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) pipe, which can raise manhole to the regular height of the overlayed road pavement with rapid construction and minimum traffic jams. This environmental-friendly technology is method completed by the methyl methacrylate monomer (MMA) double wide flanged GFRP pipe composite structures in order to raise manhole to the regular height. In this paper, two kinds of the compressive strength tests of MMA mortar composites were conducted and evaluated by a general compressive strength test, and compressive strength test after freezing-thawing resistance test. It was found that this MMA mortar composites will be used for the application of the double wide flanged GFRP pipe composite structures.

  • The complexity of the bacterial recombination system is a barrier for the construction of bacterial mutants for the further functional investigation of specific genes. Several protocols have been developed to inactivate genes from the genus Pseudomonas. Those protocols are complicated and time-consuming and mostly do not enable easy construction of multiple knock-ins/outs. The current study describes a single and double crossover-recombination system using an optimized vector-free allele-exchange protocol for gene disruption and gene replacement in a single species of the family Pseudomonadaceae. The protocol is based on self-ligation (circularization) for the DNA cassette which has been obtained by overlapping polymerase chain reaction (Fusion-PCR), and carries an antibiotic resistance cassette flanked by homologous internal regions of the target locus. To establish the reproducibility of the approach, three different chromosomal genes (ncRNA31, rpoN, rpoS) were knocked-out from the root-associative bacterium Pseudomonas stutzeri A1501. The results showed that the P. stutzeri A1501 mutants, which are free of any plasmid backbone, could be obtained via a single or double crossover recombination. In order to optimize this protocol, three key factors that were found to have great effect on the efficiency of the homologous recombination were further investigated. Moreover, the modified protocol does not require further cloning steps, and it enables the construction of multiple gene knock-in/out mutants sequentially. This work provides a simple and rapid mutagenesis strategy for genome editing in P. stutzeri, which may also be applicable for other gram-negative bacteria.
