  • The parameter study of buckling behavior of steel built-up column under compression force is presented in this study. The shear deformation effects due to the bending moment and shear forces are considered for the H-shaped main members along the entire built-up column and batten member connecting double H-shaped main members. The parametric study is performed according to the length of the built-up column, the distance of the H-shaped main members and the number and type of cover plate for battens, respectively. The applicability of AISC design specification of normal and high tension bolted built-up column is investigated. The buckling loads for built-up columns are compared with those obtained from the analytic solution developed in this study, AISC specification, and finite element method based on the beam and plate element, respectively.

  • The problem of earthquake induced torsion in buildings is quite old and although it has received a lot of attention in the past several decades, it is still open. This is evident not only from the variability of the pertinent provisions in various modern codes but also from conflicting results debated in the literature. Most of the conducted research on this problem has been based on very simplified, highly idealized models of eccentric one-story systems, with single or double eccentricity and with load bearing elements of the shear beam type, sized only for earthquake action. Initially, elastic models were used but were gradually replaced by inelastic models, since building response under design level earthquakes is expected to be inelastic. Code provisions till today have been based mostly on results from one-story inelastic models or on results from elastic multistory idealizations. In the past decade, however, more accurate multi story inelastic building response has been studied using the well-known and far more accurate plastic hinge model for flexural members. On the basis of such research some interesting conclusions have been drawn, revising older views about the inelastic response of buildings based on one-story simplified model results. The present paper traces these developments and presents new findings that can explain long lasting controversies in this area and at the same time may raise questions about the adequacy of code provisions based on results from questionable models. To organize this review better it was necessary to group the various publications into a number of subtopics and within each subtopic to separate them into smaller groups according to the basic assumptions and/or limitations used. Capacity assessment of irregular buildings and new technologies to control torsional motion have also been included.

  • In this study, we propose an image stitching method for large-area holographic photo lithography. In this method, a hologram medium become a hologram mask for lithography. And the mask has information for stitched images. These images are recorded by signal images which are controlled with DMD (digital micro-mirror device), and serial hologram recording is achieved with a motorized linear stage. Using this method, fringe seams appear on the stitching area. To remove these fringe seams, double exposure holographic lithography is tried. Each stitched image is recorded and reconstructed with a different reference beam. The experiments confirm that fringe seams are removed.

  • The NASA Antarctica balloon experiment CREAM has successfully collected the data of energetic cosmic rays during flights in past years. We will present the recent analysis results of the CREAM experiment. We will also report on the launch and recovery process of the latest flight. The silicon charge detector of the CREAM has played the key role in the precision measurement of the charge constitution of energetic cosmic rays. We proposed the upgrade of the CREAM experiment with the installment of a new large silicon charge detector on top of the CREAM instrument. The charge measurement of the large silicon detector with no material in front is expected to improve the accuracy of the CREAM charge measurement drastically when combined with the measurement of the existing double layer silicon detector. We will present the fabrication of the large silicon detector and its performance in the radiation source test as well as in the beam test.

  • This paper presents the results of an investigation aimed at developing reinforced concrete beams consisting of precast permanent U-shaped reinforced mortar forms filled with different types of core materials to be used as a viable alternative to the conventional reinforced concrete beam. To accomplish this objective, an experimental program was conducted and theoretical model was adopted. The experimental program comprised casting and testing of thirty beams of total dimensions $300{\times}150{\times}2,000mm$ consisting of permanent precast U-shaped reinforced mortar forms of thickness 25 mm filled with the core material. Three additional typical reinforced concrete beams of the same total dimensions were also cast to serve as control specimens. Two types of single-layer and double-layers steel meshes were used to reinforce the permanent U-shaped forms; namely welded wire mesh and X8 expanded steel mesh. Three types of core materials were investigated: conventional concrete, autoclaved aerated lightweight concrete brick, and recycled concrete. Two types of shear connections between the precast permanent reinforced mortar form and the core material were investigated namely; adhesive bonding layer between the two surfaces, and mechanical shear connectors. The test specimens were tested as simple beams under three-point loadings on a span of 1,800 mm. The behavior of the beams incorporating the permanent forms was compared to that of the control beams. The experimental results showed that better crack resistance, high serviceability and ultimate loads, and good energy absorption could be achieved by using the proposed beams which verifies the validity of using the proposed system. The theoretical results compared well with the experimental ones.

  • Since Modern bridges have a tendency to make the spans continuous and longer, the effect of concrete shrinkage and creep is very important and must be evaluated appropriately for the durability and safety of steel-concrete composite bridges. However, highway design specification in current use prescribes $180^{1\;2}$ as the final shrinkage strain. which is for less value than one resulted from many experimental researches and cause some problems in the construction of composite bridges due to the understimation of shrinkage strain. Thus, in this paper nonlinear analysis with time-steps applying the CEB-FIP(90) provision have been conducted for plate girder bridge, box girder bridge and Preflex beam bridge and the linear equivalent shrinkage strain for the design of composite bridges. which produces the stress equal to the values from the nonlinear analysis, has been calculated by comparing the results with the values following highway design specification. The results yield appropriately double values than $180^{1\;2}$ which highway design specification prescribes.

  • In the present study, the low speed (4 km/h) crash behaviour of an aluminium bumper system was characterised by FE analyses based on the FMVSS 581, which regulates automotive bumpers. Two types of cross-sectional designs, i.e., Model 1, which contains a single rib and Model 2, double ribs, have been considered along with Al7021, 6082 and 6060 for the aluminium bumper back beam. Variations in thickness starting from 2 to 4 mm of the bumper system cross-section in the FE model was implemented in order to investigate the thickness effect on the bumper's crash behaviour.. Three kinds of design variables, namely, number of ribs, material and thickness, are considered. The FE analysis results are summarised with the maximum load and the Specific Energy Absorption (SEA) since they are the key factors in determining the crashworthiness of automotive structures. The results may also be able to indicate how to achieve lightweight structure of the automotive bumper system either directly or indirectly.

  • We developed a mass-memory chip by staking 1 Gbit double data rate 2 (DDR2) synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) memory core up to 4 Gbit storage for future satellite missions which require large storage for data collected during the mission execution. To investigate the resistance of the chip to the space radiation environment, we have performed heavy-ion-driven single event experiments using Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba medium energy beam line. The radiation characteristics are presented for the DDR2 SDRAM (K4T1G164QE) fabricated in 56 nm technology. The statistical analyses and comparisons of the characteristics of chips fabricated with previous technologies are presented. The cross-section values for various single event categories were derived up to ~80 $MeVcm^2/mg$. Our comparison of the DDR2 SDRAM, which was fabricated in 56 nm technology node, with previous technologies, implies that the increased degree of integration causes the memory chip to become vulnerable to single-event functional interrupt, but resistant to single-event latch-up.

  • Homoepitaxial growth of GaN on n-type GaN substrates was carried out by hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) method. This enables us to reduce or to eliminate the bowing of the GaN substrate caused by thermal mismatch. As a result, the two opposite crystal surfaces have been found to possess low dislocation density. The surface polarity of the homoepitaxially grown GaN was confirmed by both etching of the surface and conversion beam electron diffraction(CBED). The surface morphology and the photoluminescencemeasurement indicated that the surface properties of N-polar face of the homoepitaxlally grown GaN are quite different from the initial N-polar face of the heteroepitaxially grown GaN substrate Also, both surfaces of the GaN substrate were characterized by room temperature Double crystal X-ray diffraction (DCXRD) and photoluminescence measurement.

  • Optical Band-pass Filter(BPF) for the selected wavelength of 4300 nm was designed and fabricated on Si wager by alternately depositing Ge and $SiO_2$ thin layers by an electron beam evaporation technique. The fabricated BPF showed the optical transmittance characteristics of 58.2% with FWHM(Full Width at Half Maximum) of 204 nm at 4300 nm, but showed the transmittance less than 5% due to the reflectance over all the wavelength ranges except 4300 nm band. The $CO_2$ sensitivity of BPF was investigated with the transmittance as a function of $CO_2$ gas concentration using a sensing cell attached to FT-IR instrument. The transmittance of BPF was almost linearly decreased with increasing of $CO_2$ concentration in the range of from 500 to 5000 ppm. The sensing structure using double BPFs showed higher slop of transmittance vs $CO_2$ concentration, and thus higher gas sensitivity than that using a single BPF, even though the former had relatively lower transmittance.
