Objectives: Here, we present cases of mandibular fracture that were managed with the cortical lag screw fixation technique (CLSFT) in order to critically evaluate technique indications and limitations of application at various fracture sites. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study. The study sample was composed of patients suffering from mandibular fractures that were treated by the CLSFT. The outcome variables were fracture type, duration of surgery, number of screws, and pattern of application. Other study categories included patient demographics and causes of injury. Chi-square tests were used to assess descriptive and inferential statistical differences, and the P-value was set at 0.05. Results: Thirty-three patients were included in the study sample, with a mean age of 30.9±11.5 years and a male predominance of 81.8%. The technique was applied more frequently in the anterior mandibular region (51.5%) than in other sites. Double CLSFT screws were required at the symphysis and parasymphysis, while single screws were used for body and angle regions. No intraoperative and postoperative variables were significantly different except for surgical duration, which was significantly different between the sites studied (P=0.035). Conclusion: We found that CLSFT is a rapid, cost-effective technique for the fixation of mandibular fractures yielding good treatment results and very limited complications. However, this technique is sensitive and requires surgical expertise to be applied to mandibular fractures that have specialized characteristics.
A series of wind tunnel tests, including 1:50 sectional model tests, 1:50 free-standing bridge tower tests and 1:70 full-bridge aeroelastic model tests were carried out to systematically investigate the aerodynamic performance of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB). The test result indicates that there are three wind-resistant safety issues the HZMB encounters, including unacceptable low flutter critical wind speed, vertical vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of the main girder and galloping of the bridge tower in across-wind direction. Wind-induced vibration of HZMB can be effectively suppressed by the application of aerodynamic and mechanical measures. Acceptable flutter critical wind speed is achieved by optimizing the main girder form (before: large cantilever steel box girder, after: streamlined steel box girder) and cable type (before: central cable, after: double cable); The installations of wind fairing, guide plates and increasing structural damping are proved to be useful in suppressing the VIV of the HZMB; The galloping can be effectively suppressed by optimizing the interior angle on the windward side of the bridge tower. The present works provide scientific basis and guidance for wind resistance design of the HZMB.

Satellite communication for high altitude platform stations (HAPS) and low earth orbit (LEO) systems suffer from dust and sand (DU&SA) storms in the desert regions such as Saudi Arabia. These attenuations have a distorting effect on signal fidelity at high frequency of operations. This results signal to noise ratio (SNR) to dramatically decreasing and leads to wireless transmission error. The main focus in this paper is to propose common relations between HAPS and LEO for the atmospheric impairments affecting the satellite communication networks operating above Ku-band crossing the propagation path. A double phase three dimensional relationship for HAPS and LEO systems is then presented. The comparison model present the analysis of atmospheric attenuation with specific focus on sand and dust based on particular size, visibility, adding gaseous effects for different frequency, and propagation angle to provide system operations with a predicted vision of satellite parameters' values. Skillful decision and control system (SD&CS) is proposed to control applied parameters that lead to improve satellite network performance and to get the ultimate receiving wireless signal under bad weather condition.
Purpose: The stroke patients have gait dysfunction due to impaired neural tracts; corticospinal tract (CST), corticoreticular pathway (CRP), and vestibulospinal tract (VST). In this study, we investigated characteristics of gait pattern according to the injury aspect of the neural track in a stroke patient. Methods: One patient and six control subjects of similar age participated. A 19-year-old male patient with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage on right basal ganglia, thalamus, corona radiata and cerebral cortex due to arteriovenous malformation rupture. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data was acquired 21 months after the stroke. Kinematic and spatio-temporal parameters of gait were collected using a three-dimensional gait analysis system. Results: On 21 months DTI, the CST and CRP in affected hemisphere showed severe injury, in contrast, the VST in affected hemisphere showed intact integrity. Result of gait analysis, walking distance and speed were significantly decreased in a patient. The stance rate of unaffected lower limb, the swing rate of affected lower limb and the duration of double stance significantly increased compared with normal control. The knee and hip joint angle were significantly decreased in a patient. Conclusion: We found recovered independent gait ability may be associated with unimpaired VST in a patient with severe injury in CST and CRP.

This research experimentally evaluated the local stress distribution along the cross-section of composite beams under both positive and negative moments. The experiment utilized a large-scale, two-story, two-by-three bay steel gravity frame with a concrete on metal deck floor system. The composite shear connections, which are nominally assumed to be pinned under gravity loading, can develop non-negligible moment-resisting capacity when subjected to lateral loads. This paper discusses the local stress distribution, orshear lag effects, observed near the beam-to-column connections when subjected to combined gravity and lateral loading. Strain gauges were used for measurements along the beam depth at varying distances from the connection. The experimental data showed amplified shear lag effects near the unconnected region of the beam web and bottom flange under the applied loading conditions. These results indicate that strain does not vary linearly across the beam cross-section adjacent to the connection components. This insight has implications for the use of experimental strain gauge data in estimating beam demands near the connections. These findings can be beneficial in informing instrumentation plans for future experimental studies on composite beams.

Suspended monorail trains (SMTs) are sensitive to crosswinds, and instantaneous aerodynamic characteristics of two SMTs passing each other under crosswinds are particularly complicated. In this study, a pressure measurement test is carried out on stationary train-bridge models arranged in several critical positions. In addition, a validated moving CFD model is developed with the dynamic and sliding mesh method to explore the realistic train movement effects. The time-varying aerodynamic forces and surface pressure distribution on, as well as the flow field around running trains and bridges during trains passing each other, are computed in detail to illustrate the shielding effect of the upstream train. The results reveal that when two trains begin to pass each other, the side force coefficient of the downstream train reduces significantly to negative values due to the wind shielding effect of the upstream train. The moving model successfully captures that airflow is separated on the middle line of the head car for the suspended monorail train, and the surrounding bluff double-beams can significantly affect the flow structures around the train. The wind shielding effect of the upstream train on the downstream train will weaken as the relative yaw angle decreases.

The polymer insulators have been extensively used as an alternate material of ceramic insulators. However, when they are used in practical conditions, there are many problems of decreasing performance and shortening lifetime due to the exposures of degradation factors applied from the outdoor situations. Accordingly, the analysis of polymer degradations has been getting influential too late as one of important subjects for improvements of safety and reliability. Heat, water treatments are arbitrary simulated for finding out the initiations and processes of surface degradation on the polymer surface. Especially, this study is focused on the chemical changes properties. From the analysis of hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecular structures, final modeling of surface degradation is accomplished. We checked the contact angle depending on heat and moisturized accelerated degradation and ran an XPS analysis to check the mechanism change of the surface of the PCB polymer composite. The surface that had a tendency to attract moisture showed a decrease in the contact angle and generated a large amount of carboxyl($-COO^*$) radicals. The hydrophobized surface showed an increase in the contact angle and had a stable chemical composition constituted of the breakaway of oxygen radicals and the formation of double bond by carburization.
Purpose: The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the conical solar concentrator (CSC) system, whose design is focused on increasing its collecting efficiency by determining the optimal conical angle through a theoretical study. Methods: The design and thermal performance analysis of a solar concentrator system based on a $45^{\circ}$ conical concentrator were conducted utilizing different mass flow rates. For an accurate comparison of these flow rates, three equivalent systems were tested under the same operating conditions, such as the incident direct solar radiation, and ambient and inlet temperatures. In order to minimize heat loss, the optimal double tube absorber length was selected by considering the law of reflection. A series of experiments utilizing water as operating fluid and two-axis solar tracking systems were performed under a clear or cloudless sky. Results: The analysis results of the CSC system according to varying mass flow rates showed that the collecting efficiency tended to increase as the flow rate increased. However, the collecting efficiency decreased as the flow rate increased beyond the optimal value. In order to optimize the collecting efficiency, the conical angle, which is a design factor of CSC, was selected to be $45^{\circ}$ because its use theoretically yielded a low heat loss. The collecting efficiency was observed to be lowest at 0.03 kg/s and highest at 0.06 kg/s. All efficiencies were reduced over time because of variations in ambient and inlet temperatures throughout the day. The maximum efficiency calculated at an optimum flow rate of 0.06 kg/s was 85%, which is higher than those of the other flow rates. Conclusions: It was reasonable to set the conical angle and mass flow rate to achieve the maximum CSC system efficiency in this study at $45^{\circ}$ and 0.06 kg/s, respectively.
The measurement of angled erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), as a replacement for perpendicular ESR, for cattle blood was scrutinized since it has been well known that perpendicular ESR in cattle is too slow to be adopted as an effective clinical test. Samples of blood were taken from 186 Korean native cattle over 2 years old. The results obtained in the experiment were summarized as follows. 1. Average values of perpendicular ESR/24hrs in 15 apparently healthy cattle, as measured by Wintrobe, Westergren and capillary tubes, were $5.8{\pm}2.2$, $11.1{\pm}3.7$ and $10.4{\pm}4.5%$ respectively, which were found to be similar to the values of perpendicular ESR/hr of normal blood of human. 2. The ESR was determined in the tubes held at 90, 75, 60, 45, 30 and 15-degree angles, using 3 types of tubes. For the diagnostic purposes, the best results were obtained from the tubes held at 45-degree angle. 3. The angled ESR values increased as the diameters of the tube-bores decreased. 4. The tube length did not affect the angled ESR(%). 5. The angled ESR values increased with the increased environmental temperature during the ESR measurement. 6. The storage temperature at $5^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$, of the blood for 24 hours did not affect the angled ESR. 7. Samples of blood were treated with 4 kinds of anticoagulants (heparin, $K_2$-EDTA, double oxalate and sodium citrate) and the ESR was determined at 45-degree angle, using capillary hematocrit tubes. The ESR values were higher in the blood samples treated with sodium citrate than in those treated with other anticoagulants. 8. By using the autologous plasma, the PCV was adjusted to be 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50ml/100ml and the ESR was determined in the capillary hematocrit and Wintrobe tubes held at 45 degrees. In both of the methods the ESRs increased as the values of PCV decreased. The regressions of ESR to PCV in both 45-degree-angled capillary and Wintrobe tubes were curvilinear. For the capillary hematocrit tubes the second degree polynomial $Y=61.9779-2.3533x+0.0228x^2$ (r=0.9999) fits the data. And in the case of Wintrobe tubes the second degree polynomial $Y=27.9767-1.1314x-0.0117x^2$ (r=0.9998) fits the data. 9. The 45-degree angled ESR was determined in the blood of 71 healthy Korean native cows using capillary hematocrit tubes. The average PCV was $35.4{\pm}3.6ml/100ml$. The observed ESR/hr averaged $7.2{\pm}2.7%$, while the corrected ESR/hr to a PCV of 36ml/100ml averaged $6.6{\pm}1.3%$. From these results it was concluded that to obtain the best results the ESR/hr of Korean native cattle should be determined at 45-degree angle at room temperature($20^{\circ}C$) using capillary hematocrit tubes.
The small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) beamline BL4C1 at the 2.5 GeV storage ring of the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) has been in its first you of operation since August 2000. During this first stage it could meet the basic requirements of the rapidly growing domestic SAXS user community, which has been carrying out measurements mainly on various polymer systems. The X-ray source is a bending magnet which produces white radiation with a critical energy of 5.5 keV. A synthetic double multilayer monochromator selects quasi-monochromatic radiation with a bandwidth of ca. 1.5%. This relatively low degree of monochromatization is sufficient for most SAXS measurements and allows a considerably higher flux at the sample as compared to monochromators using single crystals. Higher harmonics from the monochromator are rejected by reflection from a flat mirror, and a slit system is installed for collimation. A charge-coupled device (CCD) system, two one-dimensional photodiode arrays (PDA) and imaging plates (IP) are available its detectors. The overall performance of the beamline optics and of the detector systems has been checked using various standard samples. While the CCD and PDA detectors are well-suited for diffraction measurements, they give unsatisfactory data from weakly scattering samples, due to their high intrinsic noise. By using the IP system smooth scattering curves could be obtained in a wide dynamic range. In the second stage, stating from August 2001, the beamline will be upgraded with additional slits, focusing optics and gas-filled proportional detectors.
