A Study on the Optimum Structural Design for Oil Tankers Using Multi-Objective Optimization

  • Recently, the importance of multi-objective optimization techniques and stochastic search methods is increasing. The stochastic search methods have the concepts of the survival of the fittest and natural selection such as genetic algorithms(GA), simulated annealing(SA) and evolution strategies (ES). As many accidents of oil tankers cause marine pollution, oil tankers of double hull or mid deck structure are being built to minimize the marine pollution. For the improvement of oil tanker design technique, an efficient optimization technique is proposed in this study. Multi-objective optimization problem of weight and cost of double hull and mid deck tanker is formulated. Discrete design variables are used considering real manufacturing, and the concept of relative production cost is also introduced. The ES method is used as an optimization technique, and the ES algorithm was developed to generate a more efficient Pareto optimal set.

  • The underwater radiated noise can be reduced by decreasing the structure borne noise of the on-board equipment. Therefore, the structure borne noise of the onborad installed equipment is strongly restricted by ROK navy with MIL-Std 740-2. Usually, the vibration transmissibility from the equipment to the hull of the ship is dependent on its mount characteristics. Even though the double mount structure is proper to apply for ship board application rather than single mount, it is not widely applied due to the weight and volume resriction of the ship. Therefore, in this research, the base using sandwitch panel which can act as double mount structure is suggested and its noise reduction capacity is verified with analytic calculation as well as experiment.

  • With the effectuation of the amendment of MARPOL 73/78 on 5 April 2005, enforcement regulations of Marine Pollution Prevention Act were revised in domestic on 12 March 2005 that double hull structure was required to the small single bottom oil tankers under DWT(deadweight tonnage) 500 ton for the protection of the marine pollution casualties. The objective of this study is to develop the double bottom structure of small oil tanker under DWT 500 ton with superior crashworthiness and to establish its suitable standard to double bottom structure. The promoting strategy of this R&D is classified into the crashworthy structural analysis of small oil tankers using LS/DYNA3D code and the examination of their damage stabilities according to tonnage. It could be thought that the desirable inner bottom height should be above the B/7.5 and its minimum height 0.65m for the domestic small oil tanker under DWT 500ton.

  • 본 논문에서는 이상화구조요소법을 적용하여 이중선체 유조선의 충돌손상 해석기법을 개발하고, 모형실험결과와의 비교를 통하여 개발한 해석기법의 정도를 검증한 뒤 4만톤급 컨테이너선의 선수가 이중선체 VLCC의 선측을 충돌할때의 손상거동을 각종설계인자(이중선측폭, 선측 부재치수등)를 변화시켜 가면서 시리즈해석을 수행하여 그 특성을 분석하였다. 본 해석법은 항복, 압괴(crushing), 파단(rupture), 국부 및 전체파손의 상관효과, 변형속도(strain-rate) 영향, gap/contact조건등을 고려하고 있으며, 소요계산시간이 유한요소법에 비해 극히 짧고 해석정도도 높으므로 실제선박의 충돌문제에 대한 구조설계 및 안전성 평가시에 유용하게 적용할 수 있는 "설계응용을 겨냥한 충돌해석방법"(design-oriented collision analysis procedure)이라 할 수 있다.

선체구조의 용접이음부의 피로강도 해석법에 관한 연구 (A Study on the fatigue strength analysis of the welded joints in ship hull construction)

  • In this report, a method to predict the fatigue strength in welded structure member of ship construction is studied considering the effects of statistical characteristics of mild steels and weld toe shapes on the fatigue crack initiation life. The fatigue test under pulsating bending load is carried out with the model specimens of the web frame in double bottom of ship hull. The propriety of the fatigue life curve with probability of failure in the transverse strength members of ship hull construction is confirmed by the comparison with the results of fatigue test on the model of the various transverse strength members.

  • CSR(Common Structure Rules) enter into force on $1^{st}$ April 2006. Generally for double hull tankers of less than 150m in length, the Rules of the individual Classification Society are to be applied. Where high tensile stresses act through an intermediate plate, increased fillet welds or penetration welds are to be used longitudinal/transverse bulkhead primary support member end connections to the double bottom. If workers have begun to make used of established procedures between corrugated BHD and lower stool joint, first to welding on groove of face and then it has to gouging to blow on groove of root. So amount of man-hour increased, productivity secreased.

  • 본연구에서는 이상화구조요소법(理想化構造要素法)을 적용하여 선체구조(船體構造)의 최종(最終) 종강도(縱强度)를 효율적으로 해석할 수 있는 방법을 개발하였다. 이를 위해 2축방향 축력을 받는 판요소(板要素)에 대한 이상화판요소(理想化板要素)를 초기처짐과 잔류응력의 영향 및 국부구조와 전체구조간의 상관효과를 고려하여 정식화하였다. 본 해석법을 이중선각구조(二重船殼構造)로 된 4만톤급 정유운반선(精油運搬船)에 적용하여 초기처짐, 잔류응력 및 재료의 항복응력의 변화에 따른 선각(船殼)거어더의 최종(最終) 종강도(縱强度)를 해석하고, 이들 결과를 바탕으로 종강도(縱强度)측면에서의 잉여강도계수(剩餘强度係數) 및 신뢰성지표(信賴性指標)를 평가하였다.

  • Oil Tight Bulkhead (O. T. Bulkhead) is one of the most important structural members of oil tankers in the views of vessel's strength and safety. Therefore O.T. bulkhead's strength should be sufficient against relevant loadings, which is normally verified by local scantling requirement and structural strength analysis defined in CSR (Common Structure Rules for Double Hull Oil Tankers). However, there is a weak-able situation when the vertical stiffeners are cut due to the penetration of cargo pipes through O. T. Bulkhead. In addition, CSR does not define how to prove the strength of this case. Therefore it is necessary to verify the structural adequacy in case that several vertical stiffeners are discontinued. This article intends to prove the strength of O. T. Bulkhead with five (5) vertical stiffeners discontinued due to pipes' penetration using the grillage analysis and the finite element analysis and to provide proper reinforcement.

A Strength Analysis of a Hull Girder in a Rough Sea

  • A ship in waves is suffered from the various wave loads that comes from its motion throughout its life. Because these loads are dynamic, the analysis of a ship structure must be considered as the dynamic problem precisely. In the rationally-based design, the dynamic structural analysis is carried out using dynamic wave loads provided from the results of the ship motion calculation as a rigid body. This method is based on the linear theory assumed low wave height and small amplitude of motion. But at the rough sea condition, high wave height, compared with ship's depth, induce the large ship motion, so the ship section configuration under waterline is rapidly changed at each time. This results in a non-linear problem. Considering above situation in this paper, a strength analysis method is introduced for the hull girder among waves considering non-linear hydrodynamic forces. This paper evaluates the overall or primary level of the ship structural dynamic loading and dynamic response provided from the non-linear wave forces, and bottom flare impact forces by momentum slamming theory. For numerical calculation a ship is idealized as a hollow thin-walled box beam using thin walled beam theory and the finite element method is used. This method applied to a 40,000 ton double hull tanker and attention is paid to the influence of the response of the ship's speed, wave length and wave height compared with the linear strip theory.
