  • Background: We investigated the impact of 0.35 T magnetic field on dose calculation for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) in the ViewRay system (ViewRay Inc.), which features a simultaneous use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to guide radiotherapy for an improved targeting of tumors. Materials and Methods: Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of the effects induced by the 0.35 T magnetic field on various characteristics of SABR plans including the plan qualities and dose calculation for the planning target volume, organs at risk, and outer/inner shells. Therefore, two SABR plans were set up, one with a 0.35 T magnetic field applied during radiotherapy and another in the absence of the field. The dosimetric parameters were calculated in both cases, and the plan quality indices were evaluated using a Monte Carlo algorithm based on a treatment planning system. Results and Discussion: Our findings showed no significant impact on dose calculation under the 0.35 T magnetic field for all analyzed parameters. Nonetheless, a significant enhancement in the dose was calculated on the skin surrounding the tumor when the 0.35 T magnetic field was applied during the radiotherapy. This was attributed to the electron return effect, which results from the deviation of the electrons ejected from tissues upon radiation due to Lorentz forces. These returned electrons re-enter the tissues, causing a local dose increase in the calculated dose. Conclusion: The present study highlights the impact of the 0.35 T magnetic field used for MRI in the ViewRay system for NSCLC SABR treatment, especially on the skin surrounding the tumors.

  • Several investigators have presented the effects of external magnetic fields on the dose distributions for clinical electron and photon beams. We focus the low energy electron beam with more lateral scatter In this study we calculated the beam profiles for an clinical electron beam of 6 MeV with longitudinal magnetic fields of 0.5 T-3.0 T using a Monte Carlo code. The principle of dose enhancements in the penumbra region is to deflect the laterally scattered electrons from its initial direction by the skewness of the laterally scattered electrons along the direction of magnetic field lines due to Lorentz force under longitudinal magnetic field. To discuss the dose enhancement effect on the penumbra area from the calculated results, we introduced the simple term of penumbra reduction ratio (PRR), which is defined as the percentage difference between the penumbra with and without magnetic field at the same depth. We found that the average PRR are 33%, and 49% over the depths of 1.5 cm, 2.0 cm, and 2.4 cm for the magnetic fields of 2.0 T and 3.0 T respectively. For the case of 0.5 T and 1.0 T the effects of magnetic filed were not observed significantly. In order to obtain the dose enhancement effects by the external magnetic field, we think that its strength should be more than 2 T approximately. We expect that the PRR would be saturated to 50-60% with magnetic fields of 3 T-5 T As a result of these calculations we found that the penumbra widths can be reduced with increased magnetic fields. This Penumbra reduction is explained as a result of electron lateral spread outside the geometrical edges of the beam in a longitudinal magnetic field. This means that the electron therapy benefits from the external magnetic fields.

  • The present study reports morphology and developmental pattern off siliquosa cultured in a laboratory condition. The zygote was spherical with a diameter of 85 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. During development the polarized zygote divided horizontally and the lower daughter cell divided horizontally into 2 cells. The upper cell was divided repeatedly in horizontal and vertical directions to form a cylinder-like structure, which subsequently developed into secondary and tertiary dichotomous branches. Optimum temperature for zygote release and fertilization was 25C. Injury inflicted by slicing was cured by epidermal differentiation, and adventitious branches; the branches emerging from the pith cells, however, developed no rhizoid. Adventitious branch formation rate was over 88% in all plates supplemented with 0.5 mg/L IAA and peaked at 98% under 0.5 mg/L IAA plus 0.5-5.0 mg/L NAA treatment. NAA stimulated the differentiation of adventitious branches at a wide range of concentrations, while IAA, 2,4-D and kinetin exhibited dose-dependent stimulation.

  • Maize (Zea mays L. cv. kosungjaerae and cv. youngwoljaerae) seeds were irradiated with the dose of $0.5{\sim}20$ Gy by $^{60}Co\;{\gamma}-ray$ radiation to investigate the effect of the low dose ${\gamma}-ray$ radiation on the germination rate, early growth and yield. The low dose radiation was able to improve the germination rate and early growth in maize, but the optimal radiation doses were different depended on kinds of cultivars. High stimulatory effect in early growth of maize was observed in 2 Gy irradiation group of kosungjaerae cultivar and in 12 Gy irradiation group of youngwoljaerae cultivar. The optimal radiation dose for the enhancement of yield and yield components in maize was 8 Gy in kosungjaerae cultivar and $4{\sim}12$ Gy in youngwoljaerae cultivar.

  • The object of this study was to obtain acute toxicity information (single oral dose toxicity) of lyophilized water extract of Puerariae Radix (PR) in both male and female mice. In order to investigate the 50% lethal dose $(LD_{50})$, approximate lethal dosage (ALD), test substances were once orally administered to female and male ICR mice at dose levels of 2000 and 0 (control) mg/kg (body wt.) according to the recommendation of KFDA Guidelines [2005-60, 2005]. The mortality and body weight changes, clinical signs and gross observation were monitored during 14 days after dosing. Organ weight and histopathology of 12 principal organs were measured. As the results, we could not find any mortality, clinical signs, body weight changes and gross findings except for PR extracts unrelated sporadic findings. In addition, no abnormal changes related PR extracts treatment on the organ weight and histopathology of principal organs were detected except for some sporadic findings including hyperplasia of lymphoid follicles in the popliteal lymph nodes and spleen as pharmacological effects of PR extracts. The results obtained in this study suggest that the PR extracts does not cause any toxicological signs except for pharmacological effects of enhancement of Immune system. The $LD_{50}$ and ALD of PR extracts in both female and male mice were considered as over 2000 mg/kg because no mortalities were detected up to 2000mg/kg that was the highest dose recommended by KFDA and Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development.

  • The photoluminescence (PL) emission of Si nanocrystals synthesized by 400 keV Si ion implanted in $SiO_2$ is studied as a function of ion dose and annealing time. The formation of nanocrystals at around 600 nm from the surface was confirmed by RBS and HRTEM, and the Si nanocrystals showed a wide and very intense PL emission at 700-900 nm. The intensity of this emission showed a typical behaviour with a fast transitory increase to reach a saturation with the annealing time, however, the red shift increased continuously because of the Ostwald ripening. The oversaturation of dose derived a decrease of PL intensity because of the diminishment of quantum confinement. A strong enhancement of PL intensity by H passivation was confirmed also, and the possible mechanism is discussed.

  • Using isolated perfused livers obtained from rats that have been fed saturated and unsatu-rated fatty acid diets the rates of hepatic microsomal oxidation of 7-ethoxycoumarin(EC) to 7-hydroxycoumarin(HC) and the rates of subsequent conjugation of the produced HC to its glucuronide and sulfate esters have been determined. Prior to preparing the isolated perfused livers. rats were fed either fat free diet 10% beef tallow diet or 10% corn oil diet for 3 weeks. The rates of oxidation from EC to HC and also of the subsequent glucuronidation of HC were higher in the corn oil diet group than those found for the fat free and beef tallow diet groups. When the concentrations of infusing EC were increased stepwise there was a dose-dependnet increase for the release of the glucuronide form of HC metabolites at the expense of the sulfate ester form. This dose dependant shift observed for the corn oil group was more significnat than those found for other groups. These results indicate that corn oil feeding has produced enhancement in the rates of hepatic microsomal drug oxidation and glucuronide conjugation the reactions catalyzed by enzymes embedded in the hepatic microsomal membranes.

  • Bell's palsy is an acute peripheral facial paralysis with no detectable cause. Although the prognosis of Bell's palsy is generally good, some patients experience poor recoveries and there is no established treatment for those that do not recover even after receiving the conventional treatment. Here we present two cases of refractory Bell's palsy with facial nerve enhancement in magnetic resonance imaging who showed symptomatic improvement after the late administration of high-dose intravenous methylprednisolone.

  • This study analyzed the total number of 19,636 patients and radiation technologists, 11,433 of male and 8,203 of female by examined body parts, age, types of detectors, the using contrast enhancement and working condition of the technologists, regular staffs or rotation-duty staffs, based on the K-DOS program distributed by FDA with the DLP value of diagnostic evaluation. The result shows that the effective radiation dose was 0.7mSv~41.7mSv for each region and male patients had more radiation exposure than females. And the amount of exposure was also affected by the types and the method of detectors. Furthermore, the regular staffs took the role of helping the patient to get reduced amount of radiation exposure than rotation duty-staffs. Computed tomography (CT) use has increased dramatically over the past several decades. In this reason, to support the patients and the workers' health in the field, the hospitals should apply specialized regular working radiation technologist system and manufacturing companies of those CTs should develop low medical radiation exposure devices.

  • Effects of electron beam (EB) irradiation on the mechanical strength of Cu (conducting sheath) and Nb (diffusion barrier) of Cu/Nb/MgB2 superconducting was investigated. Wire- and tape-type Cu/Nb/MgB2 samples were irradiated at E-beam energy of 2.5 MeV and 5 mA and a maximum E-beam dose was 5×1017 e/m2. The hardness value of Cu and Nb region was measured by the Vickers micro-hardness method. In the case of the wire sample, the hardness of Cu and Nb increased proportionally as the dose was increased up to 5×1017 e/m2, whereas in the case of the tape sample, the hardness increased up to a dose of 0.5×1017 e/m2, and decreased slightly 5×1017 e/m2. The hardness increase of Cu and Nb is believed to be due to the decrease of the deformability of Cu and Nb due to the defects formed inside the materials by E-beam irradiation.
