This paper presents the error performance of 16 star-QAM with diversity reception in microcell systems in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN) and cochannel interference. The differential detection of 16 star-QAM is split into phase detection and amplitude detection. This technique can reduce the degradation of error performance which is due to fading and the complexity of receiver. Diversity reception is proposed to improve the degradation of error performance due to fading. Equal gain and maximal ratio combinings were adopted for the phase detection and the amplitude detection, respectively. The performance of 16 star-QAM was evaluated for various of Rician factor K, maximum Doppler frequency f_DT, signal to cochannel interference ratio and diversity branch L.

Automotive Radar Systems are currently under development for various applications to increase accuracy and reliability. The target tracking is most important in single or multiple target environments for accuracy. The tracking algorithm provides smoothed and predicted data for target position and velocity(Doppler). To this end, the fixed gain filter(${\alpha}{\beta}$ filter, ${\alpha}{\beta}{\gamma}$ filter) and dynamic filter(Kalman filter, Singer-Kalman filter, etc) are commonly used. Gating is used to decide whether an observation is assigned to an existing track or new track. Gating algorithms are normally based on computing a statistical error distance between an observation and prediction. The data association takes the observation-to-track pairings that satisfied gating and determines which observation-to-track assignment will actually be made. For data association, NNPDA(Nearest Neighbor Probabilistic Data Association) algorithm is proposed. In this paper, we designed a target tracking system developed for an Automotive Radar System. We show the experimental results of the 77GHz FMCW radar sensor on the roads. Four tracking algorithms(${\alpha}{\beta}$ filter, ${\alpha}{\beta}{\gamma}$ filter, 2nd order Kalman filter, Singer-Kalman filter) have been compared and analyzed to evaluate the performance in test scenario.

Doubly-selective (DS) fading channel is often occurred in many orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems, such as high-speed rail communication systems and underwater acoustic (UWA) wireless networks. It is challenging to provide an accurate and fast estimation over the doubly-selective channel, due to the strong Doppler shift. This paper addresses the doubly selective channel estimation problem based on complex exponential basis expansion model (CE-BEM) in OFDM systems from the perspective of distributed compressive sensing (DCS). We propose a novel DCS-based improved sparsity adaptive matching pursuit (DCS-IMSAMP) algorithm. The advantage of the proposed algorithm is that it can exploit the joint channel sparsity information using dynamic threshold, variable step size and tailoring mechanism. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves 5dB performance gain with faster operation speed, in comparison with traditional DCS-based sparsity adaptive matching pursuit (DCS-SAMP) algorithm.

The purpose of this study is the suggestion of optimized parameters in OI (Optimal Interpolation) by experimental study. The observation of applying optimal interpolation is ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) data at the southwestern sea of Korea. FVCOM (Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model) is used for the barotropic model. OI is to the estimation of the gain matrix by a minimum value between the background error covariance and the observation error covariance using the least square method. The scaling factor and correlation radius are very important parameters for OI. It is used to calculate the weight between observation data and model data in the model domain. The optimized parameters from the experiments were found by the Taylor diagram. Constantly each observation point requires optimizing each parameter for the best assimilation. Also, a high accuracy of numerical model means background error covariance is low and then it can decrease all of the parameters in OI. In conclusion, it is expected to have prepared the foundation for research for the selection of ocean observation points and the construction of ocean prediction systems in the future.

When adapting the transmitter to the channel state information(CSI), improved transmission is possible compared to the open loop system where no CSI is provided at the transmitter. However, since the perfect channel information is rarely available at the transmitter, the system design based on the partial CSI becomes an important factor. Especially, in mobile environments, the consideration for the outdated CSI should be applied for mitigating the performance degradation. In this paper, we propose a robust adaptive modulation and coding scheme for bit-interleaved coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing over time-varying channels. With reasonable feedback overhead, the proposed scheme shows the enhanced performance by compensating for the outdated CSI due to Doppler spread. Simulation results confirm that the performance gain is achieved by applying an accurate BER estimation method.

In this paper, we propose an efficient preceding scheme for STBC-Spatial Muiltiplexing OFDM systems. In MIMO systems, the precoder is designed on the assumption that feedback channel information is perfectly known to transmitter and receiver. However, feedback delay and link errors in real environment make the transmitter use the incorrect channel information and consequently cause the performance degradation. The proposed precoder is designed to compensate for the performance degradation by the diversity gain provided by STBC. At the transmitter, the precoder for each subcarrier is constructed by using the index of codebook, subcarrier correlation, and auto correlation of channel. From the simulation results, STBC-spatial multiplexing OFDM outperforms the preceded-spatial multiplexing OFDM at $SER=10^{-3}$ when the Doppler frequency is greater than 60Hz.

In land mobile communications, multipath fading is one of the key factors which affect the system performance. Some extensive studies have been carried out to improve the degraded performance under this fading channels. The PSAM channel compensation method using channel fading estimation is widely used and TCM is a combined coding and modulation technique that has been shown to provide significant coding gain without increasing the transmission bandwidth. In this paper, we analyze the performance of PSA-TC-8PSK which combines PSAM and TCM over frequency nonselective fading channels. To estimate channel fading, Wiener filter which minimizes error variance is used as compensation method and we analyze the affects on the system performance of the number of filter taps, period of the pilot symbol frame, and the Doppler frequency. In addition, we consider the symbol timing recovery circuit which can be implemented in the full-digital method and analyze the effects of symbol timing error on the system performance.
We stabilized the frequency and power of a CW radio-frequency-excited $CO_2$ laser on the peak of the Doppler broadened gain curve using the photoacoustic effect generated from the laser itself. The condenser microphone is installed in the radio frequency discharge chamber to detect a photoacoustic signal. The photoacoustic signal is fed to a lock-in stabilizer as a reference signal for stabilization. The frequency stability is estimated to be better then 5.4${\times}$10$^{-8}$ at the P(20) line. The stabilized output variation was reduced 9.3%, compared to 100% for a free running laser.

In this paper, we present the basic design results for high-resolution radar development at S-band frequency that can precisely measure the miss distance between two targets. The basic system requirement is proposed for the design of a 3.5 GHz linear frequency-modulated (LFM) radar with maximum detection distance and distance resolution of 2 km and 1 m, respectively, and the specifications of each module are determined using the radar equation. Our calculations revealed a signal-to-noise ratio ${\geq}30dB$ with a bandwidth of 150 MHz, transmission power of 43 dBm for the power amplifier, gain of 26 dBi for the antenna, noise figure of 8 dB, and radar cross-section of $1m^2$ at a target distance of 2 km from the radar. Based on the calculation results and the theory and method of LFM radar design, the hardware was designed using software defined radar technology. The results of the subsequent field test are presented that prove that the designed radar system satisfies the requirements.

In the initial stage of the communications between a base station and a satellite transponder, the base station transmits the frequency-sweeping un-modulated up-link carrier within a certain frequency range to acquire the doppler frequency shift and signal power between the base station and the satellite in orbital flight. The satellite transponder acquires and tracks the carrier in order to initialize the communication. To control such initialization process, the satellite receiver should analyze the input carrier signal in various ways. This paper presents an SNR estimation algorithm to control the initialization process. The proposed algorithm converts the input signal into the baseband polar coordinate representation and estimates the SNR via the statistics of the angular signal components as well as the status parameters to control the receiver. The Monte-Carlo simulations shows the validity of the estimation proposed.
