  • A series of N-[4-chloro-2-fluoro-5-(2-(substituted)pyrimidinyloxy)phenyl]-3,4,5,6-tetrahydrophthalimides was synthesized, and the herbicidal activities of those derivatives were evaluated through pre- and post-emergence application under upland conditions in a greenhouse. The results showed that most compounds resulted in stronger herbicidal activities on broadleaf weeds than on grass weeds. The N-[4-chloro-2-fluoro-5-(2-pyrimidinyloxy)phenyl]-3,4,5,6-tetrahydrophthalimide showed the best weed control efficacy and marginal corn safety at a rate of 60 g/ha through pre-emergence application.

  • Objective : The authors developed a stereotactic device for irradiation of small animals with Leksell Gamma Knife Model C. Development and verification procedures were described in this article. Methods : The device was designed to satisfy three requirements. The mechanical accuracy in positioning was to be managed within 0.5 mm. The strength of the device and structure were to be compromised to provide enough strength to hold a small animal during irradiation and to interfere the gamma ray beam as little as possible. The device was to be used in combination with the Leksell G-$frame^{(R)}$ and $KOPF^{(R)}$ rat adaptor. The irradiation point was determined by separate imaging sequences such as plain X-ray images. Results : The absolute dose rate with the device in a Leksell Gamma Knife was 3.7% less than the value calculated from Leksell Gamma $Plan^{(R)}$. The dose distributions measured with $GAFCHROMIC^{(R)}$ MD-55 film corresponded to those of Leksell Gamma $Plan^{(R)}$ within acceptable range. The device was used in a series of rat experiments with a 4 mm helmet of Leksell Gamma Knife. Conclusion : A stereotactic device for irradiation of small animals with Leksell Gamma Knife Model C has been developed so that it fulfilled above requirements. Absorbed dose and dose distribution at the center of a Gamma Knife helmet are in acceptable ranges. The device provides enough accuracy for stereotactic irradiation with acceptable practicality.

  • We have observed the morphology of YBCO thin films grown on the SrTiO$_3$(100) substrates by the Pulsed Laser Deposition method. AFM and SEM images show that the YBCO grains grow spirally from their own seeds whereas outgrowths are considered to remain unchained as the film thickness increases. The images of various stages of film growth suggest that the outgrowths of 1000${\sim}$2000 ${AA}$ size are mainly formed at the very early stage of film growth. The results of XRD measurement clearly show that even a film of about 10 ${AA}$ thickness already forms orthorhombic YBCO structure although common superconducting resistivity behavior is known to be observed for the films with thickness above 100 ${AA}$.

  • The different degrees of blackening were observed at the inner surface of borosilicate, soda-lime, and aluminosilicate glass tubes having different sodium (Na) contents. The sodium contents ($Na_2O$) within the borosilicate, soda-lime, and aluminosilicate glass tubes were found to be 4%, 14%, and 0.06%, respectively. The degree of blackening was shown to increase as the sodium content within the glass of the fluorescent lamp containing Ne+Ar+Hg gas mixture. Higher degree of blackening was observed from the inner surface of the glass tube coated with $Y_2O_3$. The blackening was found to be originated from the amalgam of $NaHg_2$ generated by the chemical reaction between the mercury ions within the discharge gas and sodium within the glass tube during operation.

  • The doping process of the solar cell has been used by furnace or laser. But these equipment are so expensive as well as those need high maintenance costs and production costs. The atmospheric pressure plasma doping process can enable to the cost reduction. Moreover the atmospheric pressure plasma can do the selective doping, this means is that the atmospheric pressure plasma regulates the junction depth and doping concentration. In this study, we analysis the atmospheric pressure plasma doping compared to the conventional furnace doping. the single crystal silicon wafer doped with dopant forms a P-N junction by using the atmospheric pressure plasma. We use a P type wafer and it is doped by controlling the plasma process time and concentration of dopant and plasma intensity. We measure the wafer's doping concentration and depth by using Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), and we use the Hall measurement because of investigating the carrier concentration and sheet resistance. We also analysis the composed element of the surface structure by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and we confirm the structure of the doped section by using Scanning electron microscope (SEM), we also generally grasp the carrier life time through using microwave detected photoconductive decay (u-PCD). As the result of experiment, we confirm that the electrical character of the atmospheric pressure plasma doping is similar with the electrical character of the conventional furnace doping.

  • Introduction : It has been reported that the survival of low-grade glioma patients depends upon the time of malignant transformation. The authors presents the clinical analysis of histologically proven trasformed gliomas. Materials and Method : A total 92 patients who were consecutively treated and histologically confirmed hemispheric low-grade gliomas between 1980 and 1998 were analyzed and followed. All cases meet the criteria of WHO glioma classification of grade II. Results : The mean follow-up period was 73 months. Twenty two among 92 cases(24%) were histologically proven to be transformed into malignant ones. The mean time to transformation was 56 months. The 5-year and 10-year survival rates of the transformed group were 66% and 30% respectively and significantly different from the survival rates of the non-transformed group(p=0.0018). Among clinical factors at presentation, the initial tumor volume had a tendency to be larger in the transformed group than that of the non-transformed group and became significant when it was divided into more than $30cm^3$ or not(p=0.02). Among therapeutic factors, the extent of removal had no influence on the rate of malignant transformation. But postoperative radiation therapy were more frequently given to the pre-transformed group than the non-transformed group and the frequency was significantly different(p=0.02). Conclusions : The authors had found that the initial tumor volume and radiation therapy could be clinical prognostic factors for the malignant transformation of low-grade gliomas.

  • This study was conducted to investigate liquid pig manure (LPM) application rates on the growth characteristics, yield, and feed value of whole crop barley in Yeongsangang and Saemangeum reclaimed tidal land. Electronic conductivity (EC), organic matter (OM), and available phosphate (Av. $P_2O_5$) increased in chemical properties of Yeongsangang and Saemangeum soil as raising LPM application level. As increasing LPM application level, exchangeable $Na^+$ significantly increased in Yeongsangang, while exchangeable $K^+$ significantly increased in Saemangeum. Plant height was not significantly different from LPM 100% to LPM 200% in Yeongsangang and in Saemangeum. Dry matter yield of whole crop barley increased steadily, but crop yield of LPM 200% in Yeongsangang ($10.5ton\;ha^{-1}$) was as much as that of LPM 150% ($10.0ton\;ha^{-1}$). Yield of LPM 200% ($11.2ton\;ha^{-1}$) in Saemangeum was similar to that of LPM 150% ($10.5ton\;ha^{-1}$). Crude protein (CP) increased depending on LPM application level, but total digestible nutrients (TDN) increased regardless of LPM application level. LPM 200% was the highest in TDN yield (Yeongsangang: $7.4ton\;ha^{-1}$, Saemangeum: $6.9ton\;ha^{-1}$), but there was no statistical difference between LPM 150% (Yeongsangang: $6.9ton\;ha^{-1}$, Saemangeum: $6.6ton\;ha^{-1}$) and LPM 200%. From the results described above, optimum rate of LPM for cultivating whole crop barley is considered 100% in Yeongsangang reclaimed tidal land and 150% in Saemangeum reclaimed tidal land, showing that the effect of LPM application is better in Segmentation than that in Yeongsangang for yield of whole crop barley.

  • Seed of Codonopsis lanceolata exhibits low germination due to impermeable seed coat. Prolonged seed dormancy can be overcome by the application of gibberellins, as it promotes growth of the embryo and weakens the structures surrounding of embryo. The effects of photoperiod, sugar and gibberellin concentration were investigated at constant temperature for 12 days and 22 days in vitro and invivo conditions respectively. The rate of germination of seeds of Codonopsis lanceolata in wet filter paper in both complete dark and light treatments was significantly lower than that of seed treated with $GA_3$. It clearly indicates that there is significant coat imposed dormancy in the seed of Codonopsis lanceolata. The rate of germination in vivo condition was lower than that of the in vitro condition supplemented with $GA_3$ Thus, the physical dormancy due to impermeable seed coat and low level of endogenous gibberellins in the seed was the cause of poor germination rate in Codonopsis lanceolata.
