  • An Experimental investigation into the effects of the blowing jet type and jet orientation on the aerodynamic characteristics over an elliptic type airfoil is explored. This study is aimed at expanding the data base of blowing jet application in separation control of elliptic airfoil. Present data includes: surface pressure, blowing jet exit velocity measurements and integrated aerodynamic loads. The experiments were performed for an elliptic airfoil at Reynolds number $8.22{\times}10^5$. The improvement of effects of pulsed jet on the increase of aerodynamic characteristics was significant for the post-stall angle. For reduced mass flow rates, pulsed jet allowed considerably higher lift to be generated. The jet orientation also showed dominant parameter on the separation control Positive jet angle delay or avoid separation, whereas negative jet angle promotes it.

  • The human glycoprotein, stanniocalcin 2 (STC2) plays multiple roles in several tumor types, however, its function and clinical significance in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain unclear. In this study, we detected STC2 expression by quantitative real-time PCR and found STC2 was upregulated in HCC tissues, correlated with tumor size and multiplicity of HCC. Ectopic expression of STC2 markedly promoted HCC cell proliferation and colony formation, while silencing of endogenous STC2 resulted in a reduced cell growth by cell cycle delay in G0/G1 phase. Western blot analysis demonstrated that STC2 could regulate the expression of cyclin D1 and activate extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) in a dominant-positive manner. Transwell chamber assay also indicated altered patterns of STC2 expression had an important effect on cell migration. Our findings suggest that STC2 functions as a potential oncoprotein in the development and progression of HCC as well as a promising molecular target for HCC therapy.

  • The major source of errors in high-speed networks such as Broadband ISDN(B-lSDN) is buffer overflow during congested conditions. These congestion errors are the dominant sources of errors in 1high-speed networks and result in cell losses. Conventional communication protocols use error detection and retransmission to deal with lost packets and transmission errors. However, these conventional ARQ(Automatic Repeat Request) methods are not suitable for the high-speed networks since the transmission delay due to retransmissions becomes significantly large. As an alternative, we have presented a method to recover consecutive cell losses using forward error correction(FEC) in ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode)networks to reduce the problem. The performance estimation based on the cell discard process model has showed our method can reduce the cell loss rate substantially. Also, the performance estimations in ATM networks by interleaving and IP multicast service are discussed.

  • This paper presents an investigation result that is made to determine dominant influencing factors and their specific impacts on motorist detour makings for VMS placements on freeway. This was necessary to provide engineers with a tool for evaluating VMS cost-effectiveness and its feasibility. This research found that additional travel time delay is the most influential variable in determining motorist detour makings. Also, more than 70% freeway motorists recognize the adjacent national roads as their detour routes, and both AADT and the distance to the entering point of the detour path are found to be dominating factors. Motorist detour ratio model by VMS placement on freeway is developed based on the Stated Preference. In model validation, actual detour making behaviors observed by the Revealed Preference values verify the detour ratio on the Stated Preference. These research findings should be useful for cost-effective placements of VMS on freeway, and it is recommended that the results be tested by practicing engineers in the ITS sector.

  • Recently, a physically based model of water-table fluctuation due to precipitation is developed based on aquifer water balance model. In the model, it was assumed that the water infiltration into ground surface is advection dominant and immediately reaches to water-table. The assumption may be suited for the sites where the water-table is shallow and/or the permeability of the unsaturated zone is high. However, there are more cases where the model is not directly applicable due to thick and low permeable unsaturated zone. For the low permeability unsaturated zone, the pattern of water flux passing through unsaturated zone is diffusive as well as advective. In this study, to improve the previously developed water-table fluctuation model, we combined the delayed drainage model, which has long been used in well hydraulics, to the water-table fluctuation model. To test the validity of the development, we apply the developed model to 5 different domestic sites. The model parameters are calibrated based on the groundwater hydrograph and the precipitation time series, and the correlation analyses among the parameters are pursued. The overall analyses on the delineated model parameters indicate that the delayed drainage parameters or delay index used in the developed model are able to reveal drainage information in the unsaturated zones.

  • Flash memory based embedded computing systems are becoming increasingly prevalent. These systems typically have to provide an instant start-up time. However, we observe that mounting a file system toy flash memory takes 1 to 25 seconds mainly depending on the flash capacity. Since the flash chip capacity is doubled in every year, this mounting time will soon become the most dominant reason of the delay of system start-up time Therefore, in this paper, we present instant mounting techniques for flash file systems by storing the In-memory file system metadata to flash memory when unmounting the file system and reloading the stored metadata quickly when mounting the file system. These metadata snapshot techniques are specifically developed for NOR- and NAND-type flash memories, while at the same time, overcoming their physical constraints. The proposed techniques check the validity of the stored snapshot and use the proposed fast trash recovery techniques when the snapshot is Invalid. Based on the experimental results, the proposed techniques can reduce the flash mounting time by about two orders of magnitude over the existing de facto standard flash file system, JFFS2.

  • The multiuser detection (MUD) based wireless receiver requires more accurate channel estimation than the single user detection (SUD) schemes such as Rake receiver, and hence the post processing is required for MUD to clean up the estimated channel coefficients by eliminating the noise only coefficients. The adaptive post processing method is proposed in order to provide more accurate channel responses and the power level of the background noise and interferences at the cost of the negligible processing delay compared to the conventional method based on the threshold test with the threshold value relative to the noise variance. The simulations are performed in 3GPP-TDD mode environment. The results show that the noise estimation error of the proposed method is maximum $10\%$, which is much smaller than $50\%$ maximum error of the conventional method.

  • IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN) has become the prevailing solution for wireless Internet access while transport control protocol (TCP) is the dominant transport-layer protocol in the Internet. It is known that, in an infrastructure-based WLAN with multiple stations carrying long-lived TCP flows, the number of TCP stations that are actively contending to access the wireless channel remains very small. Hence, the aggregate TCP throughput is basically independent of the total number of TCP stations. This phenomenon is due to the closed-loop nature of TCP flow control and the bottleneck downlink (i.e., access point-to-station) transmissions in infrastructure-based WLANs. In this paper, we develop a comprehensive analytical model to study TCP dynamics in infrastructure-based 802.11 WLANs. We calculate the average number of active TCP stations and the aggregate TCP throughput using our model for given total number of TCP stations and the maximum TCP receive window size. We find out that the default minimum contention window sizes specified in the standards (i.e., 31 and 15 for 802.11b and 802.11a, respectively) are not optimal in terms of TCP throughput maximization. Via ns-2 simulation, we verify the correctness of our analytical model and study the effects of some of the simplifying assumptions employed in the model. Simulation results show that our model is reasonably accurate, particularly when the wireline delay is small and/or the packet loss rate is low.

  • In this paper, we propose a generalized vector channel model for wireless communication systems using antenna arrays. The proposed channel model reflects path loss. spatial-temporal variation of shadowing, multipath fading , Doppler effect, spatial distribution of local scatterers and delay spread due to remote dominant scatterers. In addition, we use a discrete ray model in which respective ray signal experiences independent shadowing, fading and Doppler shift, and impinges on antenna arrays at a distinct angle. Based on the proposed mode. we derive the relations on the spatial and temporal correlations of the received signals and implement a spatial channel simulator. By comparing the theoretical values with the simulated ones, we verify the effectiveness of the implemented simulator. The simulator is then used to generate an arbitrary channel impulse response and to analyze the channel characteristics under various environments.

  • Group key agreement protocols are designed to solve the fundamental problem of securely establishing a session key among a group of parties communicating over a public channel. Although a number of protocols have been proposed to solve this problem over the years, they are not well suited for a high-delay wide area network; their communication overhead is significant in terms of the number of communication rounds or the number of exchanged messages, both of which are recognized as the dominant factors that slow down group key agreement over a networking environment with high communication latency. In this paper we present a communication-efficient group key agreement protocol and prove its security in the random oracle model under the factoring assumption. The proposed protocol provides perfect forward secrecy and requires only a constant number of communication rounds for my of group rekeying operations, while achieving optimal message complexity.
