  • In this letter, we propose a novel polygonal approximation of digital curves that preserve original shapes. The proposed method first detects break points, which have two different consecutive vectors, and sets an initial dominant point set. The approximation is then performed iteratively by deleting a dominant point using a novel distance, which can measure both the distance and the angle acuteness. The experimental results show that the proposed method can preserve original shapes and is appropriate for various shapes, including slab-sided shapes.

  • Failure of a redundant long-span bridge is often described by innumerable failure modes, which make the structural system reliability analysis become a computationally intractable work. In this paper, an innovative procedure is proposed to efficiently identify the dominant failure modes and quantify the structural reliability for a long-span bridge system. The procedure is programmed by ANSYS and MATLAB. Considering the correlation between failure paths, a new branch and bound operation criteria is applied to the traditional stage critical strength branch and bound algorithm. Computational effort can be saved by ignoring the redundant failure paths as early as possible. The reliability of dominant failure mode is computed by FORM, since the limit state function of failure mode can be expressed by the final stage critical strength. PNET method and FORM for system are suggested to be the suitable calculation method for the bridge system reliability. By applying the procedure to a CFST arch bridge, the proposed method is demonstrated suitable to the system reliability analysis for long-span bridge structure.

  • This study analyzed how not only socio-economic variables but also lifestyle variables affect the expenditure and the patterns of households. The result of multiple regression analysis resealed that economic variables(e.g, income, saving, property) and lifestyle variable(e.g, enjoyment and convenience seeking type) affected the consumption expenditure. Based on the result of cluster analysis, The consumption expenditure patterns of urban households were separated as 1)necessity dominant pattern, 2)transportation $.$ communication dominant patters, 3)other consumption dominant pattern, 4)education$.$culture and recreation dominant pattern. The result of logistic analysis revealed that debt, saying and living location variables were major factors to determine the consumption expenditure patterns of urban households. But did not Influence on the Consumption Expenditure Patterns.

  • The structure and variation of the mating call in Rana nigromaculata was studied in a population at Da-rak, Chong-won, Chung-buk (36$\circ$ 37' latitude, 127$\circ$ 21' longitude) in Korea. The mating call consists of 3 to 8 pulse groups divided by clear silent intervals. Each pulse group is also composed of fine pulses. Temperature and body size affect the temporal and spectral characteristics of the mating call. Pulse, pulse group repetition rate and dominant frequency rise with increasing temperature, whereas pulse grouprepetition rate and dominant frequency decrease with increasing body size. A playback experiment was designed to establish the effect of a potential intruder on male calling. During the stimulus periods, resident males markedly decreased the pulse repetition rate, and icreased the rate of pulse groups, dominant frequency, and the number of call groups. This results indicate that this species responds in a graded fashion when interacting with other individuals.

  • There are 7 classes, 17 orders, and 141 species of benthic macroinvertebrates at the 5 study sites from Feb, '91 to May, '92. Total species frequency number has less variations among sites than seasonal changes. Not considering seasonal changes this indicates that there are some influences from outside pollution sources. Seasonally, Ortho chadiinae sp. 2 take 21.2% share of total species. It was the dominant species in Feb. '91. With total average level Ephemeroptera take 51.3% of total species as first dominant species. Diptera 27.8% as second dominant species and Trichoptera 16.7% as third dominant species. Through these biological indexes, they appear to have unstable living environments in summer at sites 1 and 5. One can see that site 1 is more polluted than site 3 because site 1 has more pollution sources such as pastures and recreation areas.

  • This study explores how Twitter users perceive their socio-communication attitudes as well as those who users follow. From the theoretical perspective of communication styles in interpersonal communication, this study focuses on the positions and roles of users and their partners in Twitter conversations by conducting a survey and a content analysis. The results demonstrate that the respondents tended to perceive their communication attitudes to be more passive on Twitter than in the real world. In addition, they tended to perceive that their most trusted followees were more likely to show dominant communication attitudes than they did. These results indicate that ordinary users are more likely to play a role as listeners than as speakers on Twitter while entrusting several trusted users with the role of a dominant communicator and that their perception of their own and their followees' communication styles tends to influence their actual behavior on Twitter.

  • This study was investigated the species composition of demersal fishes by a bottom trawler GAYA, in order to be used basic data for resources management of fishery in the jointly controlled waters of the East China sea. We caught 52 species, 1,167 individuals and 186.171kg in biomass in summer, and 1,924 individuals and 200.871kg in biomass in winter The first dominant species in individuals in summer was Glossanodon semifasciatus, and in biomass was Dentex tumifrons. But that in winter was Ovalipes punctatus in both individuals and biomass. It was a special phenomenon that crustacea was to be the first dominant species compared with general offshore fishery in Korea. Catch per unit effort (kg/hr) of bottom trawl in winter was higher than that in summer. There was also big difference by station in the diversity index, the evenness index and the dominant index.

  • Soil amendment, especially addition of clay minerals, has been widely conducted to improve the physical and chemical properties of cultivated soils. However, there are no systematic studies on the effects of the structural type of clay minerals added. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of structural type of clay minerals on physical properties of soils. Two experimental soils, layer-dominant and granule-dominant ones, were mixed with either a layer-type smectite or a granule-type zeolite at a level of 2.0 wt%. It was observed that water permeability of soils was decreased by smectite whereas not significantly changed by zeolite. This effect was much greater in layered clay-dominant soil than in granular clay-dominant soil. Our results clearly indicated that the relationship of structural type between a soil and an amendment plays a decisive role in the soil properties. Therefore, it is highly recommended that the structural types of both soil and amendment be taken into consideration for soil amendment by clay minerals.
