Recently, as people's interest in wood has increased, the use of wood as household and landscape decking materials has increased. As the deck material, imported wood such as synthetic wood, Ipe, and Malas was used in addition to the existing preserved wood, but recently deck use has been activated as part of the activation of domestic materials. As an important quality factor in the selection of such decking materials, various durability along with weatherability for long - term use is required for maintenance. Generally used tropical hardwoods have excellent weatherability and durability without additional preservative treatment. However, the domestic larch is a wood species with a higher specific gravity and durability than ordinary conifers. However, it has not yet been used as a deck material due to lack of comparative studies on its characteristics. Therefore, hardness and durability of wood were measured using six specimens of Ipe, Massaranduba, Malas, Douglas-fir, Larch and Torrefied-Larch. Density Profile was used to measure the density, and Brinell hardness test and resistance test against momentary impact were carried out for the test of resistance to static load. Also, The hardness and durability of wood were measured by castor test with resistance test against dynamic load, as well as, nail down test by experiment on surface hardness and durability. As a result of the experiment, the hardness was increased in proportion to the density, and it was confirmed that the imported lumber was harder and durable than the domestic larch.

This research aims to measure and analyze the dimensions of typical office chairs and desks sold in domestic market, and to suggest the modifications of national guidelines considering Korean peoples' body characteristics. The scope of this study was limited to the desktop type of computer jobs, excluding laptop environment. The dimensions of 24 different office chairs and 7 tables were measured, and their dimensions were analyzed against the Ministry of Labor (MOL) Notification and Korean Standards (KS). At the same time, the data from the Size Korea was also considered. As a result, the KS guidelines were overall fulfilled by the measured products, while the MOL Notification was not. It was found that the guidelines on the chair height, seat pan depth, lumber support height, and armrest height need to be modified. Some inconsistencies between the MOL Notification and KS were also found. It is suggested that the required dimensions specified by both guidelines should be unified.
This study was carried out to investigate the physical and mechanical properties of 6 hardwoods before and after heat treatment in an effort to produce the high quality industrial lumber product. The object of the research was to design living products with heat treated woods. The results were as follows. Specific gravities of green woods were in range from 0.87 to 1.12. The specific gravities of never treated woods showed higher than those of the heat treated woods. The shrinkage of heat treated woods when green to air & oven dry was significantly low, compared to never treated woods. The compression strengths parallel to grain of heat treated woods showed higher than those of never treated woods. The moduli of rupture (MOR) of never treated and heat treated woods were $170.37N/mm^2~107.07N/mm^2$ and $122.78N/mm^2~61.27N/mm^2$ respectively. MORs of heat treated woods showed lower than those of never treated woods. The modulus of elasticity (MOE) of heat treated woods showed higher than those of never treated woods.
This study is conducted to establish the structural standard of tube and coupler scaffold which is suitable for our present stuation through the comparison analysis for domestic and foreign standards as well as measurement of field survey. The results of this study are as follows : 1) The load is classified by three categories, light-duty(equal and lower than 150kg/m$^2$), medium-duty(150-250 kg/m$^2$), heavy-duty(250-350kg/m$^2$), and the equivalent horizontal length of side posts is each, 1.5-1.8m, 1.2-1.5m, equal and lower than 1.2m, and the equivalent horizontal length between front and rear posts is each 1.2-1.5m, 0.9-1.2m, equal and lower thatn 0.9m, in accordance with the load classification. 2) The height between upper and lower runner is equal and lower than 1.5m, and the brace across the width of scaffold should be installed within 15m in horizontal direction at 45 degree angle. 3) The entire scaffold should be securely tied to the wall of permanent structure with uslng anchor and bolt at intervals not to exceed 6m in case of non-connection and 4.5m in case of connection in both horizontal and vertical direction. 4) The post should be installed on the sound foundation tied to lumber footing with using base plate, and standard platform plank should be produced in the factory and widely used in the construction field.
The goal of this study is to investigate bending properties of domestic timber. Three representative structural timber from Larix kaempferi, Pinus koraiensis, and Pinus densiflora, in the northeastern South Korea were selected. Visual grading for the timber was conducted based on KFRI notification 2009-01 and the bending strength for the timber was evaluated based on ASTM D 198 bending. The high percentage of grade 1 and 2 for Larix kaempferi shows that the KFRI notification was optimized for this species. The bending strength distributions from Pinus koraiensis and Pinus densiflora were very similar. It could be possible to specify the allowable bending properties of these two Specification using a united species group similar to spruce-pine-fir. Lastly, the bending strength of $120{\times}180mm$ structural members was higher than both existing values in KBC 2009 and design values for timber of imported species described in the NDS. Thus, 120 mm thick domestic softwoods could replace the commercial imported species and the KBC should be modified to provide design values for both timber and dimensional lumber, respectively, like NDS.
This study was conducted to evaluate the tensile properties of metal plate connector for the domestic major softwoods, such as Korean red pine, Korean white pine, and Japanese larch. The maximum tensile load of Korean red pine was 3,612kgf in AA type, it was 1.2 and 1.7 times higher load than that of Japanese larch and Korean white pine. In EA type, it was 2,704kgf, and 1.1 and 1.5 times higher than the loads of Japanese larch and Korean white pine. The failure modes of metal plate connector were metal plate withdrawal, plate tensile failure, and wood shear block failure. The failure mode of Korean red pine connector was tensile failure of plate, that is reason of the high tensile load resistance for metal plate connections in Korean red pine. The mechanical properties of metal plate connector could be predicted by the Foschi model parameter. In the initial stage, the Korean red pine connector was stiffer than the other species. The design values for metal plate connector per tooth was 25, 22, and 15kgf for Korean red pine, Japanese larch, and Korean white pine in AA type and 19, 17, and 13kgf in EA type.
Harvested wood products (HWP) are known as products from the tree such as sawn wood, plywood, particle board, structural lumber, wooden interior material, wooden furniture, and paper products. Because carbon is locked up in the HWP until eventual end-use of HWP, HWP played a role as the carbon storage which has the effect of stabilizing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. For these reasons, the suggestion that it must admit the carbon storage effect of HWP has been constantly raised. In 2011, the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which was held in Durban, South Africa, assigned "Production Approach" which targets only the HWP producted by using round wood of domestic forestry as a official method for carbon accounting. Therefore, it is necessary that each country has to determine the half-life of wood in order to correspond to the discussions and negotiations between countries in the future and to develop an inventory of product-specific domestic wood. In this study, some countries' examples of the methods and conditions for determining half-life of HWP were investigated, and it was tried to derive the factor and methodology to determine half-life span of domestic HWP appropriately.

In the southern part of the Korean Peninsula including Jeju-island, the production amount of domestic cedar has increased gradually. However, their low qualities, expected to be caused by the low density and frequent knots, have restricted their practical utilization as the high value-added products. In this study, it is aimed to look for the new uses of domestic cedar and to examine the applicability for lamination lumbers of structural glued laminated timber (glulam). Above all, machine stress ratings for individual sawn lumbers confirmed that modulus of elasticity (MOE) of cedar lumber was lower than that of other common softwood species in Korea. On the other hand, cedar lumbers have enough stiffness to manufacture the structural glulam in accordance with Korean Industrial Standard (KS). The bonding strength and durability also met the KS limitation. Nevertheless, from the result of bending tests for cedar glulam, it was shown that the modulus of elasticity (MOE) did not meet the KS limitation. Therefore, it was concluded that additional researches were needed for reinforcing the stiffness of cedar glulam.
Recently, demands for the structural uses with domestic Japanese larch and SPF(spruce-pine-fir) lumber from North America have been increased. Shear properties of nailed joints that are the most simple and optimum fastening method in wooden constructions, especially in light frame construction. For the nailed joints, in North America and Japan, a number of basic and practical studies have been performed. The shear behaviors for the double nailed joint with variations of member and its direction, were examined. Shear properties of the shear specimens with SPF stud showed more remarkable variation than larch glulam and larch stud. Furthermore, the relationships between slip modulus and strength are not coincided in every case.
To investigate weathering and surface characteristics of coating film on lumbers coated with Hwangchil(varnish of Dendropanax morbifera), we carried out to investigate the resistance against discoloration, value of crack and surface characteristics of coating films on seven domestic lumbers and those of four introduced tropical lumbers. There was investigated to evaluate the properties of coating films by the varnish of Dendropanax morbifera. There was insignificant correlations between the hardness and moisture contents of each lumber treated by the varnish. There was no significant correlations between the thickness of coating film and the hardness, either. Although we investigated 11 wood species, we found only three species as resistance wood species against discoloration; Diospysos spp., Abies holophylla and Ulmus davidiana. The crack of coaing films was the largest on Zelkova serrata followed by Juglans sinensis, Cercidiphum japonicum, Tectona grands, Ulmus davidiana, Guibourtia tessmannii, Diospysos spp. and Dalbergia latifolia. However, there was no crack of coating films on the lumbers of Juniperus rigida, Prunus serrulata var. spontanea and Abies holophylla. The crack of coating film showed positive correlations with the thickness of coating film and hardness. The surface characteristics of the coating films evaluated on the basis of $R_{a}$ values indicated the lumbers of Ulmus davidiana($0.14{\;}{\mu}m$), Juniperus rigida($0.1 5{\;}{\mu}m$), Guibourtia tessmannii($0.19{\;}{\mu}m$), Dalvergia latifolia($0.20{\;}{\mu}m$) and Diospysos spp.($0.20{\;}{\mu}m$), Cercidiphum japonicum($0.24{\;}{\mu}m$) as good species while there was insignificant differences between softwoods and hardwoods. Tectona grands, Prunus serrulata var. spontanea and Abies holophylla showed rough surface with $1.53~2.63{\;}{\mu}m$ of $R_a$ values. The four kinds of rough indices($R_a,{\;}R_z,{\;}R_{max}{\;}and{\;}R_q$) showed very low correlations with moisture contents with the correlation coefficients. The $R_a{\;}and{\;}R_{max}$ also showed slight relationship with hardness.
