  • A new compact conformal dome optical system was established, and the aberration characteristics of the dome were investigated using Zernike aberration theory. The aberrations induced by the dome at different fields of regard (FORs) from 30° to 100° were effectively balanced by a rotating cylindrical lens. This kind of optical system can be widely used in top-view optical searching devices. A design method was introduced and the optimization results analyzed in detail. The results showed that the Zernike aberrations produced by the conformal dome were decreased dramatically. Also, a complete conformal optical system was designed, to further illustrate the aberration correction effect of the rotating cylindrical lens. Using a cylindrical lens not only provided a large FOR, but also simplified enormously the structure of the conformal optical system.

  • To solve the problem that photovoltaic panels can not harvest electrical energy at a cloudy day and night, a floating solar thermoelectric generator (FSTEG, hereafter) is studied. The FSTEG is consisted of a dome shaped Fresnel lens to condense solar energy, a thermoelectric module connected with a heat sink to keep temperature difference, a floating system simulating a wavy ocean and an electrical circuit for energy storage. The dome shaped Fresnel lens was designed to have 29 prisms and its optical performance was evaluated outdoors under natural sunlight. Four thermoelectric modules were electrically connected and its performance was evaluated. The generated energy w as stored in a Li-ion battery by using a DC-DC step-up converter. For the application of ocean environment, the FSTEG was covered by the dome shaped Fresnel lens and sealed to float in a water-filled reservoir. The harvested energy shows a potential and a method that the FSTEG is suitable for the energy generation in the ocean environment.

  • Underwater archaeology relies heavily on photography and video image recording during surveillances and excavations like ordinary archaeological studies on land. All underwater images suffer poor image quality and distortions due to poor visibility, low contrast and blur, caused by differences in refractive indices of water and air, properties of selected lenses and shapes of viewports. In the Yellow Sea (between mainland China and the Korean peninsula), the visibility underwater is far less than 1 m, typically in the range of 30 cm to 50 cm, on even a clear day, due to very high turbidity. For photographing 1 m x 1 m grids underwater, a very wide view angle (180°) fisheye lens with an 8 mm focal length is intentionally used despite unwanted severe barrel-shaped image distortion, even with a dome port camera housing. It is very difficult to map wide underwater archaeological excavation sites by combining severely distorted images. Development of practical compensation methods for distorted underwater images acquired through the fisheye lens is strongly desired. In this study, the source of image distortion in underwater photography is investigated. We have identified the source of image distortion as the mismatching, in optical axis and focal points, between dome port housing and fisheye lens. A practical image distortion compensation method, using customized image processing software, was explored and verified using archived underwater excavation images for effectiveness in underwater archaeological applications. To minimize unusable area due to severe distortion after distortion compensation, practical underwater photography guidelines are suggested.

  • In this paper, we developed a novel hyperreality display called the Head Dome Projector (HDP). The HDP is a head-mounted display consisting of a dome-shaped screen with a very small radius of 40 cm, a mobile projector with ultra-wide projection lens and LED light sources. The main feature of the HDP is very wide viewing angle of 160 degrees horizontally by 120 degrees vertically comparable to the human visual field of view without head tracking and 360 degrees by 360 degrees with head tracking. According to our subjective evaluation comparing the HDP with a flat-panel display (FPD), the HDP realizes hyperreality 2.5 points higher than that realized by an FPD in the case of ${\pm}5$ level evaluation for HD motion images.

  • Speed, accuracy and smoothness are the important properties of pan-tilt camera. In the case of a high ratio zoom lens system, low vibration characteristic is a crucial point in driving pan-tilt mechanism. In this paper, a novel micro-stepping controller with a function of reducing vibration was designed using field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) technology for high zoom ratio pan-tilt camera. The proposed variable reference current (VRC) control scheme reduces vibration decently and optimizing coil current in order to prevent the step motor from occurring missing steps. By employing VRC control scheme, the vibration in low speed could be significantly minimized. The proposed controller can also make very high speed of 378kpps micro-step driving, and increase maximum acceleration in motion profiles.
