Three dogs with severe traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) due to falling wound were admitted to the Veterinary Medical Center, Chonbuk National University for evaluation of severe pelvic limbs paralysis without deep pain, normal defecation and urination. Based on physical examination, neurological assessment and computed tomogram (CT), the diagnosis was made as subluxation and compressed fracture. All the cases were surgically treated with dorsal laminectomy and a spondylosyndesis using pin and bone cements. For 2 weeks, the dogs didn't show any improvement. Consequently, the dogs were treated with electroacupuncture (EA) and Duhuojisheng-tang (DHJST). All the dogs got back the deep pain and presented wagged tail on 14-35 days after starting EA with DHJST. Especially, two of 3 dogs recovered almost normal ambulation and capacities of urination and defecation. But, one dog failed to regain normal ambulation due to inflammation of operative site which is thought to be caused by the bone cement. From these cases, it was thought that the combination of EA and DHJST mightbe one of the suitable therapies in dogs with no neurological improvement.
The effects of mineral admixtures on the bonding properties of cement mortar to polyolefin based synthetic fiber were evaluated. The mineral admixtures consisted of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% fly ash, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin in cement. Bond interactions between the cement mortar and the polyolefin based synthetic fiber were determined by Dog-bone bond tests. Bond tests of the polyolefin based synthetic fiber showed an increase in pullout load with the strength of the cement mortar. Also, the interface toughness of polyolefin based synthetic fiber in cement mortar increased as the fly ash, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin contents increased. The microstructure of polyolefin based synthetic fiber surface was examined after the pullout test to analyze the frictional resistant force according to the replacement ratio of fly ash, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin during the pullout process of polyolefin based synthetic fiber in cement mortar. The scratched of polyolefin based synthetic fibers increased with the replacement ratio of fly ash, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin. Also, the interface toughness was enhanced by adhesion forces induced by the fly ash, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin.
This study was performed to evaluate the effects of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) on the characteristics of beagle dog's periodontal ligament (BPD) cells and bone marrow (BBM) cells which have the important role on the early stage of periodontal tissue regeneration in vitro. In control group, the cells ($1.5{\times}10^5$cells/ml) were cultured alone with Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium contained with 10% fetal bovine serum, $50{\mu]g/ml$ ascorbic acid, and 10mM/ml ${\beta}-glycerophosphate$. In experimental groups, growth factors, PDGF or EGF(10ng/ml), were added into the above culture condition. And then each group was characterized by examining the cell proliferation rate, amount of total protein synthesis, alkaline phosphatase activity at 1, 5, 9, 13, 17th day after seeding of cells into the culture wells. The results were as follows: 1. Both BPD and BBM cells in PDGF-treated group proliferated more rapidly than non-treated cells. This finding also was observed in EGF-treated group but it was not as prominent as that of PDGF-treated group. The proliferation rates of both cells showed the time-dependent pattern during experimental periods in all three groups. 2. Amount of total protein synthesis was more increased in PDGF-treated group than in control group. But no significant difference between EGF-treated group and control group was observed throughout experimental periods even though the tendency of amount of protein synthesis was time-dependent pattern. 3. Alkaline phosphatase activity also more increased in PDGF-treated group than control group. But slight decrease tendency was seen in both cells of EGF-treated group. From the above results, PDGF appeared to enhance the proliferation and cellular activities including amount of total protein synthesis and alkaline phosphatase activity of BPD and BBM cell, but EGF did not show notable effects. The optimal application of these growth factors was thought to be useful as the adjunctive means in periodontal regeneration procedures.

This research performed single fiber pull-out test to evaluate the effect between fineness modulus of cement composites and the fiber bond performance (bond strength and pull-out energy). A synthetic fiber (polypropylene) and a steel fiber (hooked ends type) were inserted in the middle of dog bone shape specimens which were designed with fine aggregates of F. M. 1.96, 2.69, 3.43. The experiment results showed bond strength and pullout energy of synthetic fiber are improved as fineness modulus of cement composites increases. It is considered that the frictional resistance between synthetic fiber and cement composite increases as fineness modulus of cement composite increases and consume more energy while pull out the fiber from cement composite. However bond performance of steel fiber which resist pull out by mechanical behavior is less effected on fineness modulus of cement composite. It is considered that the mechanical fixedness of hooked ends exerts a greater effect on the pullout resistance than the frictional resistance between the cement composite and the steel fiber so F. M. of fine aggregate has a relatively small effect on the pullout resistance with the steel fiber.
The movement of tooth-bone segments by osteotomy can simultaneously shift tooth and surrounding alveolar bone in a relatively short period. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tissue changes in pulp, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone in rapid tooth-bone movement with osteotomy. The mandibular 3rd premolar of a dog was extracted and cortical bones of the buccal and lingual area were eliminated, and then cortical bones around the mesial and distal area of root, and below the root apex of the mandibular 4th premolar were osteotomized. After a one-week latency period, a tooth-borne distraction device was activated for 6 days. And pulp, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone were evaluated clinically, radiologically, histologically and immunohistochemically at 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 weeks of the consolidation Period and conclusions were roached as follows. 1. Latency period didn't affect total amount or tooth movement and healing process of tissue during consolidation period. 2. Bone formation continued through 8 weeks of consolidation in distracted side, with a high peak at 1-2 weeks, and the lowest at 6-8 weeks or consolidation. 3. At 1 week of consolidation, alveolar bone resorption, osteoclast appearance and inflammatory cell infiltration were the most active, and dentinoclasts characteristically appeared on the pulp and pressure side of the periodontal ligament. 4. The expression of $TGF-\beta$ was area-specific, as it was strong-positive at bone matrix, osteoblast osteoclast of alveolar bone, and dentinoclast inside pulp, but weak in pulp, cementoblast and acellular cementum. 5. The expression of $TGF-\beta$ was generally observed at the initial 1-2 weeks of consolidation at vessels, periodontal ligament cells, and osteoblast near alveolar bone on the distraction side of the periodontal ligament, and was significantly decreased after 6 weeks of consolidation.
The aim of this study was to investigate the periodontal response according to the timing of orthodontic force application after bone graft into the angular bony defect. Nine dogs were divided into three groups, 2, 4, and 6 weeks, according to the timing of orthodontic force application after bone graft. Periodontal angular bony defects were created surgically at the distal aspect of both maxillary third incisors. Two weeks later, flap operation was performed to eliminate inflammation and reference notch was made on the root surface at the level of the bottom of each defect. Demineralized freeze-dried bone was implanted on the left side whereas only debridement was done on the other side. Experimental tooth movement was executed during 8 weeks on both graft and non-graft sides. After 2 weeks of retention period, animals were sacrificed for histologic specimens. The results were obtained as follows 1 New bone formation was more pronounced in the graft side than in the non-grad side in all experimental animals. 2. In the 6-week group, new bone and cementum formation was observed in more than half from the notch to the cemento-enamel junction, and the zone of connective tissue attachment was found without apical migration of junctional epithelium. 3. In the 4-week group, the amount of new bone formation was smaller than in the 6-week group whereas the overall remodeling pattern was similar. 4. New bone formation was confined to around the notch and the junctional epithelium migrated apically to the level of the notch with no connective tissue attachment and cementum formation in the 2-week group. The results of the present study suggest that periodontal response may be influenced by the timing of orthodontic force application after bone graft into angular bony defect.
A 15-year-old neutered male Yorkshire terrier was presented with a gait disorder of the pelvic limbs. For differential diagnosis of neural disease, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scan were performed. CT showed bone defect in the 4th lumbar vertebra and adjacent soft tissue mass. MRI revealed a mass in left side of the 4th lumbar vertebra. The mass was uniformly enhanced on contrast-enhanced T1-weighted imaging (T1W1). Excision of the mass alleviated back pain. Vertebral osteosarcoma was identified by the histopathological examination. Therefore, CT and MRI were helpful to diagnose vertebral osteosarcoma in the dog and to plan surgical excision of the mass.
In dentistry, bony defects can be formed by cyst, tumor, inflammation, trauma and surgery in maxilla and mandible. If the overlying soft tissue invades and preoccupies the jaw bony defects, regenerated bony tissue same as adjacent bone can not replace whole space of the defects, thus preventing osteogenesis from occurring. Guided bone regeneration(GBR) is based on the prevention of overlying soft tissue from entering the bony defect during the initial healing periods. E-polytetrafluoroethylene(e-PTFE) is one of an effective and widely used barrier membrane for GBR, but it has the disadvantages such as surgical removal and high price. To overcome such disadvantages of e-PTFE, many investigators have proposed various absorbable barrier membranes. Inexpensive oxidized cellulose($Surgicel^{(R)}$) membrane was shown to have potential for use as an absorbable barrier membrane for regenerative procedure and it would not require surgical removal. The purpose of this study is to investigate the absorption periods of oxidized cellulose at the implant site and usefulness as a mechanical barrier, preventing the ingrowth of the overlying soft tissue into the bony defects. Two bony defects were made in each tibia of a dog using drill and one defect covered with oxidized cellulose and the other covered with periosteum directly as control. The experimental animals were sacrificed at 1st-7th, 10th, 14th, 21th, 28th day postoperatively, Inspection of the specimens was done to evaluate gross changes. Specimens were examined histopathologically by hematoxylin-eosin and Masson's trichrome staining under light microscope. The results were as follows : 1. There was no significant differences of inflammatory reaction between the experimental and the control group. 2. The resorption of oxidized cellulose was almost completed within 14th day. 3. Histologically, bone formation in the experimental group was somewhat more than that of the control group at 10th, 14th, 21th and 28th day postoperatively. The bone forming pattern of the experimental group was more regular than that of the control group. 4. There was no evidence of soft tissue invasion into the bony defect in the experimental group. In conclusion, oxidized cellulose membrane might be used as an alternative absorbable barrier membrane to prevent overlying soft tissue invasion into the bony defects.
Guided tissue regeneration, bone graft procedures, and application of growth factors have been used to regenerate lost periodontal tissues. Recently, enamel matrix derivative has been introduced into periodontal regeneration procedures in expectation of promoting new bone and cementum formation. The purpose' of this study was to evaluate the effect of enamel matrix derivative in 1-wall intrabony defects in beagle dogs. For this purpose, each dog was anesthesized using intravenous anesthesia and mandibular 1st, 3rd premolars were extracted. 2 months later, the 1-wall intrabony defects(mesio-distal width: 4mm, depth: 4mm) were created on the distal side of 2nd premolars and mesial side of 4th premolars. The control group was treated with debridement alone, and experimental group was treated with debridement and enamel matrix derivative application. The healing processes were histologically and histometrically observed after 8 weeks and the results were as follows : 1. The length of junctional epithelium was $0.94{\pm}0.80mm$ in the control group, $0.57{\pm}0.42mm$ in the experimental group, with no statistically significant difference between groups. 2. The connective tissue attachment was $1.36{\pm}0.98mm$ in the control group. $0.38{\pm}0.43mm$ in the experimental group, with statistically significant difference between groups(P<0.05). 3. The new cementum formation was $2.49{\pm}1.06mm$ in the control group, $3.59{\pm}0.74mm$ in the experimental group. with statistically significant difference between groups(P<0.05). 4. The new bone formation was $1.92{\pm}0.97mm$ in the control group, $2.32{\pm}0.59mm$ in the experimental group. with no statistically significant difference between groups. Within the limitation to this study protocol, enamel matrix derivative application in 1-wall intrabony defect enhanced new cementum formation. Although there was no statistically significant difference, enamel matrix derivative also seems to be effective in inhibition of apical migration of junctional epithelium and new bone formation.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors affecting healing patterns of surgically created circumferential gap defects around implants in dogs. Materials and Methods: In four mongrel dogs, all mandibular premolars were extracted. After 8 weeks of healing periods, implants were submerged. According to the surface treatment, turned surface was designated as a group A and rough surface as a group B. In each dog, surgical defects on the left side were made with a customized tapered step drill and on the right with a customized paralleled drill. Groups were also divided according to the width of the coronal gaps: 1.0mm, 1.5mm, or 2.0mm. The dogs were sacrificed following 8 weeks and the specimens were analyzed histologically and histomorphometrically. Results: During the postoperative period, healing was uneventful and implants were well-maintained. As the size of the coronal gap was increased, the amount of bone-to-implant contact was decreased. The bone healing was greater in rough surface implants compared to the turned ones. About the defect morphology, tapered shape showed much bone healing and direct bone to implant contact even in the smooth surface implants. Conclusion: Healing of the circumferential defect around dental implant is influenced by the implant surface, defect width and the morphology of the defect. When using rough surface implants, circumferential gap defects within 2 mm do not need any kinds of regenerative procedures and the healing appeared to be faster in the tapered defect morphology than the paralleled one.
