  • The distribution of glucagon-immunoreactive cells in the pancreas during various developmental stages (fetus, neonate, 1-month-old, 6-month-old and adult) of the Korean native goat was investigated by immunohistochemical methods. The varying distribution and frequency of glucagon-immunoreactive cells in the pancreas of the Korean native goat were observed. The glucagon-immunoreactive cells were detected in both exocrine and endocrine portions (pancreatic islets) at all developmental stages and also in ducts of the 6-month-old and adult. The relative frequencies of glucagon-immunoreactive cells increased in the pancreatic islets and ducts with age, but decreased in the exocrine portions. Generally, they were distributed in the interacinar spaces or marginal zone of the pancreatic islets during all stages of development. However, the cell distributions of the pancreatic islets in the neonate divided into two types: 1) ones which were distributed in the inner zone, and 2) others in the peripheral zone.

  • The effect of rancid perilla oil on the immune response in mice was studied. ICR male mice were divided into 5 groups and were fed on the experimental diets for 4 weeks. Mice were sensitized and challenged with sheep red blood cell. Immune responses were evaluated by antibody production, Arthus reaction, delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH), Rosette forming cell and macrophage activity. Biochemical items were measured by serum protein and serum albumin. The weight of spleen, thymus and liver were measured. The rancid perilla oil diets decreased humoral and cellular immune responses, the number of peripheral circulating white blood cells and total protein and serum albumin. These results showed that the high rancid perilla oil diet decreased more humoral and cellular immune response, the number of peripheral circulating white blood cells, and total protein and serum albumin than the low rancid perilla oil diet did.

  • AGNPS model is an event-based model to analyze nonpoint-source and to examine potential water quality problems from agricultural watershed. This model uses a square grid-cell system to represent the spatial variability of watershed conditions, and simulates runoff, sediment, and nutrient transport for each cell. AGNPS model was applied on Yeonwha watershed, and the test results were compared with the measured data for runoff volume, peak runoff rate, suspended solids, and phosphorus concentration. The watershed of 278.8 ha was divided into 278 cells, each of which was 1 ha in size. The coefficients of determination for runoff volume and peak flow were (0.893 and 0.801 respectively from regression of the estimated values on the measured values. The concentration of suspendid solid was increased but decreased that of phosphate with runoff volume.

  • This paper presents a cell-based motion control strategy for soccer playing mobile robots. In the central robot motion planner, the planar ground is divided into rectangular cells with variable sizes and motion indices to which direction the mobile robot should move. At every time the multiple objects-the goal gate, ball, and robots-detected, integer values of motion indices are assigned to the cells occupied by mobile robots. Once the indices being calculated, the most desirable state-action pair is chosen from the state and action sets to achieve successful soccer game strategy. The proposed strategy is computationally simple enough to be used for fast robotic soccer system.

  • An approach for predicting the effective thermal conductivities of fiber-reinforce composite has been developed based on a thermal-electrical analogy. The unit cell of the composite laminate is divided into regular volume elements and the material properties have been given to each element. By constructing the series-parallel thermal resistance network, the thermal conductivities of composite both in-plane and out-of-plane direction have been predicted. Graphite/Epoxy composite is used for a balanced plain-weave composite laminate. By comparing the predicted results and the previous works, good agreement has been found.

  • A thermal model of carbon spun yarn and its composite is presented. Based on voxelization method, the unit cells of spun carbon yam and its composite are divided into a number of volume elements and the local material properties have been given to each element. By using Finite Difference Method, temperature distribution in the unit cell can be obtained. Effective thermal conductivity of unit cell is calculated using the temperature distribution and thermal conductivities of local elements.

  • This paper presents an application of Harmony Search (HM) meta-heuristic optimization algorithm for optimal operation of microgrid system. The microgrid system considered in this paper consists of a wind turbine, a diesel generator, and a fuel cell. An one day load profile which divided 20 minute data and wind resource for wind turbine generator were used for the study. In optimization, the HS algorithm is used for solving the problem of microgrid system operation which a various generation resources are available to meet the customer load demand with minimum operating cost. The application of HS algorithm to optimal operation of microgrid proves its effectiveness to determine optimally the generating resources without any differences of load mismatch and having its nature of fast convergency time as compared to other optimization method.

  • Castleman`s disease is a rare disease entity of unknown etiology, with the characteristics of large, well marginated benign lymph node hyperplastic mass. This disease occurs predominantly in the mediastinum but also occurred in other areas of the body usually where lymph nodes are normally found. They have been divided into two histologic types: the hyaline vascular lesion which comprises over 90% of the cases; the plasma cell lesions, which was characterized by large follicle with plasma cell and systemic manifestation, such as fever, anemia elevated ESR, hypergammaglobulinemia, hypoalbuminemia. This disease have behaved in a benign fashion and complete surgical excision is the choice of treatment. We experienced a case of Castleman`s disease which was treated by surgical resection through the thoracotomy, and has good postoperative and follow up result. We report a case of the Castleman`s disease with its review.

  • The testis is composed of four cell types like supporting cells, steroid-producing cells, connective tissue cells and germ cells. Apoptosis is a common phenomenon during spormatogenesis. Apoptosis of germ cells can also be induced by exposure to radiation. Previous studies have shown that most types of germ cells are rather radiosensitive while somatic cells in testis are much more radio-resistant. The somatic cells in testis are divided to mainly Sertoli and Leydig cells. Though somatic cells are more radio-resistant than germ cells, radiation can induce the impairment of their function. This damaged function of somatic cells may accelerates degeneration of germ cell indirectly. Tn the present study, we have examined the apoptotic effect of mouse testis and irradiation effect of steroidogenesis of Leydig cells after irradiation.

  • Twenty crossbred calves of $88{\pm}5.5kg$ initial live weight and 3-4 month of age were divided into two groups and fed wheat straw and concentrate to support a 500 g daily gain in body weight. Calves in the experimental group (YC) were given a daily dose of 10 ml yeast cell suspension (YC) containing live cells $(5{\times}10^9 cells/ml)$ of Saccharomyces cerevisiae ITCCF 2094. After a growth study of 122 days metabolism trials were conducted. The calves in the YC group recorded a daily weigt gain of $492{\pm}27.8g$ as compared to $476{\pm}20.1g$ in control group. There were no significant differences in feed intake, nutrient digestibility, feed/gain ratio and nitrogen retention between the YC supplemented and control groups.
