In this study, desalination by electrodialysis with ion exchange membranes was applied to synthetic waters with various ion concentrations and also for ground waters from coastal areas in Korea. Electrodialysis performance on the synthetic solutions showed the similar tendency in operation time and current curves, i.e., shorter operation time and higher maximum current with increasing applied voltages. The ED results of synthetic waters with different ion compositions, i.e., $Na_2SO_4$, $MgSO_4$, $CaSO_4$, at the similar conductivity condition, i.e., $1,250{\mu}s/cm$ revealed that effects of mono- and divalent ions on water quality and performance in electrodialysis were different. The divalent ions had less efficiency in the ED compared to monovalent sodium ions and also divalent calcium ions showed better performance than Mg ions. The electrodialysis on the ground waters produced high quality of drinking water. The groundwater from SungRoe however showed a buildup of membrane resistance. Organic matter concentrations and great portions of divalent ions in the groundwater were possible causes of the deteriorated performance.
The effect of saponin fractions of Panax ginseng root on the interactions of human plasma lipoproteins and lecithin dispersions with dextran sulfate were studied in order to examine the effect of Panax ginseng on the lipid accumulation in the aorta. The total saponin fraction and protopanaxadiol glycosides of Panax ginseng root seemed to slightly enhance the interaction of low density lipoproteins with dextran sulfate in the absence of divalent metal ions. Protopanaxatriol glycosides remarkably inhibited the interaction of low density lipoproteins with dextran sulfate. However, all of these three saponin fractions of Panax ginseng root showed the tendency of inhibition to the interaction of high density lipoproteins with dextran sulfate in the presence of divalent metal ions by the order of protopanxatriol glycosides, protopanaxadiol glycosides and total saponin. Three saponin fractions of Panax ginseng exerted almost same tendency to the interaction of lecithin dispersions with dextran sulfate in the presence of divalent metal ions as the interaction of low density lipoproteins with dextran sulfate absence of divalent metal ions.
The potentiometric methods have been used to determined the protonation constants (logKiH) for the synthesized 1,7,13-trioxa-4,10,16-triazacyclooctadecane-N,N',N''-tri(methylacetic acid) [N3O3-tri(methylacetic acid)] and the stability constants (logKML) of the complexes of divalent and trivalent metal ions with the ligand N3O3-tri(methylacetic acid). The protonation constants of N3O3-tri(methylacetic acid) were 9.70 for logK1H, 9.18 for logK2H, 7.27 for logK3H, 3.38 for logK4H, and 2.94 for logK5H. The stability constants for the complexes of divalent metal ions with N3O3-tri(methylacetic acid) were 10.39 for Co2+, 10.68 for Ni2+, 13.45 for Cu2+, and 13.00 for Zn2+. The order of the stability constants for the complexes of the divalent metal ions with N3O3-tri(methylacetic acid) was Co2+ < Ni2+ < Zn2+ < Cu2+. The stability constants for the complexes of trivalent metal ions with N3O3-tri(methylacetic acid) were 16.20 for Ce3+, 16.40 for Eu3+, 16.27 for Gd3+, and 15.80 for Yb3+. The results obtained in this study were compared to those obtained for similar ligands, 1,7-dioxa-4,10,13-triazacyclopentadecane-N,N',N"-tri(methylacetic acid) and 1,7,13-trioxa-4,10,16-triazacyclooctadecane-N,N',N"-triacetic acid, which have been previously reported.
Macrocyclic ligands have been studied as cation carriers in a supported liquid membrane system. Cd2+ has been transported using nitrogen substituted macrocycles as carriers and several divalent metal ions (M2+=Zn, Co, Ni, Cu, Pb, Mg, Ca, and Sr) have been transported using DBN3O2, DBN2O2and PolyNtnoen as carriers in a supported liquid membrane system. Competitive Cd2+-M2+ transport studies have also been carried out with the same system. Ligand structure, stability constant, membrane solvent and carrier concentration are also important parameters in the transport of metal ions.
The aminomethylation of phenols with para-substituents by the Mannich reaction has successfully been accomplished to produce the Mannich bases 2-6. The compounds 7-8 have also been synthesized in order to identify the effect of the side arms and t he macrocycle in the complex formation. Protonation constants and stability constants of the double armed diaza-18-crown-6 ethers 2-7 with metal ions have been determined by potentiometric method at 25 $^{\circ}C$ in 95 % methanol solution. Under a basic condition (pH > 8.0), the double-armed crown ethers 2-6 revealed stronger interaction with divalent metal ions than the simple diazacrown ether 1. The stability constants with these metal ions were Co 2+ < Ni2+ < Cu2+ > Zn 2+ in increasing order, which are in accordance with the order of the Williams-Irving series. The stability constants with alkali earth metal ions were Ca 2+ < Sr 2+ < Ba 2+ in increasing order, which may be explained by the concept of size effect. It is noteworthy that the hosts 2-6, which have phenolic side arms and a macrocycle, bind stronger with metal ions than the hosts 1 and 7. On the other hand, the host 8, which has phenolic side arms with a pyperazine ring, provided comparable stability constants to those with the host 3. These facts demonstrate that phenolic side arms play a more important role than the azacrown ether ring in the process of making a complex with metal ions especially in a basic condition. In particular, the log KML values for complexation of divalent metal ions with the hosts 2-6 had the sequence, i.e., 2 (R=OCH3) < 3 (R=CH3) < 4 (R=H) < 5 (R=Cl) < 6 (R=CF3). The stability constants of the hosts 5 and 6 containing an electron-withdrawing group are larger than those of the hosts 2 and 3 containing an electron-donating group. This substituent effect is attributed to the solvent effect in which the aryl oxide with an electron-donating group has a tendency to be tied strongly with protic solvents.
The hydrogen ions in poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) membranes substiuted with $Li^+, Na^+, and K^+/ $of monvoalent metal ions, $Mg^{2+}, Ca^{2+} and Ba^{2+}$ of divalent metal ions, and $Al^{3+}$ of trivalent metal ion. In addition, $Li^+ ions were exchanged with varing reaction time. The effects of metal ions exchanged were investigated in terms of methanol permeability -uling diffusion cell. The methanol permeabilies decreased in the sequence of $Na^+, Li^+ and K^+$ and this might be due to the 'Salting-out' effect while the methanol permeabilities for divalent and trivalent ion-substituted membranes were affected by the combined effects of salting-out, eletrostatic crosslinking and extent of metal ion substiution. As for $Li^+$ ions, methanol permeabilities of PVA/SSA membranes decreased in proportion to the degrees of subsituted $Li^+$ ions.
The removal performances of divalent heavy metal ions ($Pb^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, $Sr^{2+}$ and $Mn^{2+}$) were studied using the Na-P1 zeolite synthesized from Jeju scoria in the batch and continuous fixed column reactor. The uptakes of heavy metal ions by synthetic Na-P1 zeolite decreased in the order of $Pb^{2+}$ > $Cu2^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ > $Sr^{2+}$ > $Mn^{2+}$ based on the selectivity of each ion to ionic exchange site of Na-P1 zeolite for single and mixed solutions in batch or continuous fixed column reactor. For mixed solution, each heavy metal ion uptake was lower than that in single solution, and especially the uptake for $Mn^{2+}$ decreased greatly. In batch reactor, the uptakes of heavy metal ions by synthetic Na-P1 zeolite were described by Freundlich or Langmuir equation, but they followed the former better than the latter. In continuous fixed column reactor, the maximum ion exchange capacity obtained for each of heavy metal ions, was about 90----- of that in batch reactor. The uptakes of heavy metal ions by synthetic Na-P1 zeolite increased with the increase of initial heavy metal concentration and solution pH, and the decrease of the amount and particle size of synthetic zeolite.
The inorganic components in tobacco sheet extract have significant influence on the sensory taste of the cigars and the harmful component delivery in cigarette smoke. To identify the contributions of the divalent inorganic components on harmful components delivery in cigarette smoke, a self-made selective electrodialysis was assembled with monovalent ion-selective ion exchange membranes. The influences of current density and extract content on the desalination performance were investigated. Result indicates that the majorities chloride, nitrate, and sulfate ions were removed, comparing with 50-60% of potassium and only less than 10% of magnesium and calcium ions removed in the investigated current density. The permselectivity of the tested cations across the Selemion CSO cation exchange membranes follows the order: $K^+>Ca^{2+}>Mg^{2+}$. A current density of $15mA/cm^2$ is an optional choice by considering both the energy consumption and separation efficiency. When the extract contents are in the range of 7%-20%, the removal ratios the potassium ions are kept around 60%, while the removal ratios of the calcium and magnesium ions fluctuate in the range of 16-27% and 8-14%, respectively. The tobacco smoke experiments indicated that the divalent metal ions have dual roles for the harmful component delivery in cigarette smoke. The divalent potassium and calcium ions were unfavorable for the total particulate matter emission but beneficial to decrease the HCN delivery in the mainstream cigarette smoke. The selective electrodialysis is a robust technology to decrease the harmful component delivery in cigarette smoke.

Electrodialysis (ED) is used in wastewater treatment, during the processing and recovery of beneficial materials, to produce usable water. In this study, sulfate and chlorine ions, which are the anions majorly used for electroplating, were studied as factors affecting the recovery of copper, nickel and water from wastewater by electrodialysis. Although the removal rates of copper and nickel ions were slightly higher with the use of chlorine ions than of sulfate ions, the removal efficiencies were above 99.9% under all experimental conditions. The metal ions of the plating wastewater flowed through the ion exchange membrane of the diluate tank and the concentrate tank while all the water moved together due to electro-osmosis. The migration of water from the diluate tank to the concentrate tank was higher in the presence of a monovalent chloride ion compared to that of a divalent sulfate ion. When sulfate was the anion used, the recoveries of copper and nickel increased by about 25% and 30%, respectively, as compared to the chloride ion. Therefore, when divalent ions such as sulfate are present in the electrodialysis, it is possible to reduce the movement amount of water and highly concentrate the copper and nickel in the plating wastewater.
In this study, we have investigated the substitutional effects of In ions with divalent ones in the $Srln_2O_4:Pr^{3+}$ phosphors and the relative change of the red and blue emissions. The substitutional Zn ions greatly intensified the blue emission band at 492 nm, but the red emission band at 608 nm was relatively less changed. On the other hand, Cd ions have no effect on the relative intensities. We explained the phenomena in connection with the distance of Pr-D, i.e., covalency experienced by a $Pr^{3+}$ion.
