  • Higher concentrations of ammonia ($NH_3$) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in animal barns can negatively affect production and health of animals and workers. This paper focuses on measurements of summer concentrations of ammonia ($NH_3$) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in a naturally ventilated laying henhouse located at an egg production facility in Bursa region, western Turkey. Also, indoor and ambient environmental conditions such as temperature and relative humidity were measured simultaneously with pollutant gas concentrations. The average $NH_3$ concentrations during summer of 2013 was 8.05 ppm for exhaust and 5.42 ppm for inlet while average $CO_2$ concentration was 732 ppm for exhaust and 625 ppm for inlet throughout summer. The overall minimum, average and maximum values and humidity were obtained as $16.8^{\circ}C$, $24.72^{\circ}C$, and $34.71^{\circ}C$ for indoor temperature and 33.64%, 63.71%, and 86.18% for relative humidity. The lowest exhaust concentrations for $NH_3$ and $CO_2$ were 6.98 ppm and 609 ppm, respectively. They were measured in early morning at the maximum diurnal ventilation rate in July 2013 and August 2013. The highest concentrations were 10.58 ppm for $NH_3$ and 904 ppm for $CO_2$ recorded in the afternoon when the ventilation rate was the lowest in June 2013.

  • Rumen ecology plays an important role in the fermentation process and in providing end-products for ruminants. These studies were carried out to investigate variations in rumen factors namely pH, $NH_3-N$ and microorganisms in cattle and swamp buffaloes. Furthermore, studies on diurnal patterns of rumen fermentation and the effect of rumen digesta transfer from buffalo to cattle was conducted. Based on these studies, diurnal fermentation patterns in both cattle and buffaloes were revealed. It was found that rumen NH3-N was a major limiting factor. Rumen digesta transfer from buffalo to cattle from buffalo to cattle was achievable. Monitoring rumen digesta for 14d after transfer showed an improved rumen ecology in cattle as compared to that of original cattle and buffalo. It is probable that buffalo rumen digesta could be transferred. However, further research should be undertaken in these regards in order to improve rumen ecology especially for buffalo-based rumen.

  • Diurnal variation of fish assemblage in the coastal waters, Shinsudo, Samchonpo was investigated using samples collected by RN 80net. A total of 32 species in 24 families was classfied from samples collected during the period of investigation. Enedrias nebulosus, Acanthogobius flavimanus, callionymus sp. dominated in number of individuals. These three most abundant fish species accounted for approximately 55.3% of the total number of fish collected. The percentage similarity values of number were larger than those of biomass. The catches in January and May 1987 showed a significant difference between day and night compositions. The number of species and individuals peaked just after twilight and low tide.

  • Diurnal changes of microclimatic conditions and tissue water relations were measured at two sites where Carpinus laxiflora and C. cordata were allopatrically distributed. The microclimatic conditions at a site where C. laxiflora was distributed produced severe water stress condition during summer months. Daily maximum temperature reached $30.4^\circC$ and the highest vapor pressure deficit was 1.31 KPa when 13 rainless days were continued. During this period soil water content decreased to below the field capacity even at a depth of 20 cm and xylem pressure potential also decreased to 2.04 MPa. However, turgor potential was maintained more than 0.4 MPa. Patterns of stomatal conductance were changed with evaporative demand and soil water availability. On the other hand, microclimatic conditions at a site where C. cordata was distributed were moderate water strees condition compared with those at a site C. laxiflora was distributed. Though soil water content was maintained above field capacity C. cordata showed a remarkable decrease in turgor potential and stomatal conductance throughout the experiment. These results indicate that there is a difference in habitat characteristics between the two species and C. laxiflora is more resistant than C. cordata to water stress.

  • Computer simulation has been widely used to design and optimize the operation of wastewater treatment plants since 1980. For secondary clarifiers, the simulation has been a tool to optimize the performance by providing dimensions for flocculation well. However, there has been no attempt to find the optimized geometrical parameters in circular secondary clarifier using simulation tools. In this study, three SVIs (Sludge Volume Indexes), two well types (feed and flocculation wells), 8 SWDs (Side Water Depths) and 9 bottom slopes were variables for simulation. Diurnal inflow and associated MLSS (Mixed Liquor Suspended Solid) concentrations were used for input loadings. When flocculation well was installed, 48% less concentration at lowest ESS (Effluent Suspended Solid) concentrations was produced and the diurnal ESS concentration range had been reduced by 52%. From these results, flocculation well must be installed to produce lower and stable ESS from circular secondary clarifiers. Under same loading conditions with $300m{\ell}$/g of SVI, The lowest ESS was produced when SWD was 4.5m with 4% of bottom slope. Therefore, SWD and bottom slope must not be deeper than 4.5m and must be near 4%, respectively, in circular clarifier with flocculation well to produce the lowest ESS concentration.

  • A quasi depth-varying mathematical model for wind-generated circulation in coastal areas, expressed in terms of the depth-averaged horizontal velocity components and free surface elevation was validated and used to understand the diurnal circulation process. The wind velocity is considered as a dominant factor for driving the wind generated current. In this paper, three dimensional numerical experiments that included the land topography were used to investigate the mesoscale air flow over the coastal regions. The surface temperature of the inland was determined through the surface heat budget consideration with inclusion of a layer of vegetation. A series of numerical experiments were then carried out to investigate the diurnal response of the air flow and wind-generated circulation to various types of surface inhomogeneities.

  • Diurnal acid fluctuation, stomatal resistance, and solar radiation with regard to the cladode orientation were investigated in Opuntia lanceolata Haw. growing at WPeolryeong-ri, Hallim-eup, Chejudo, Korea. Diurnal changes of titratable acidity showed the typical CAM pattern in all investigated cladodes. Water tissue in the cladode had the same pattern of acid fluctuation as mesophyll tissue. Stomatal resistance was low during the night, increased rapidly to be a peak right after sunrise and decreased again thereafter. The southern side of the cladode showed higher stomatal resistance than the northern side during the day time. It suggests that the stomata of the northern side opens under diffuse radiation. The amount of solar radiation varied depending upon the cladode orientation. It is thought that C4 acids move inter and intra mesophyll tissues in the cladode through the unknown pathways. RuBP carboxyulase activity in the cladode was very high at 14:00, but was not significant at 01:00. PEP-carboxylase had high activities both at 14:00 and at 01:00. The results of this study showed the possibility that O. lanceolata Haw. had the C3, C4 and CAM photosynthetic patterns under the environmental conditions at Weolryeong-ri.

  • Hourly PM$_{10}$ concentrations measured at 11 sites in Seoul and 10 sites in the large cities over South Korea for the period from March 1995 to February 2000 are analyzed to examine annual trend and monthly variations of the PM$_{10}$ concentrations. Further analysis has been carried out by using the one year data from March 1999 to February 2000 to see the seasonal variation, diurnal variation and weekly variation of the seasonally averaged PM$_{10}$ concentrations at each site. Weekly variations of the CO concentrations at the same sites for the same one year period are compared with that of the PM$_{10}$ concentration. There is no significant annual trend in the variation of the PM$_{10}$ concentration at all the sites analyzed. The seasonal and monthly mean concentrations show a minimum concentration in summer and alternative maximum concentration in spring and winter for most sites. The diurnal variation of the seasonally averaged mean PM$_{10}$ concentrations is strongly affected by traffic loads and meteorological conditions. The weekly variation of seasonal averaged concentrations of CO and PM$_{10}$ shows a high concentration for weekdays in spring, autumn and winter while high concentration for weekends in summer.nds in summer.

  • The tides, tidal currents and tidal prisms at Inchon Harbor are studied with recent data. The tides at Inchon Harbor is of semi-diurnal type having a spring range of 798cm and a phase age of 2 days. The monthly mean sea level at Inchon has a maximum at August and a minimum at January with a annual range of about 40cm. the tidal currents at Inchon Outer Harbor are of semi-diurnal type same as tides and nearly reversing type. The flood and ebb currents set north and south with a velocity of about 90-175 cm/sec and 120-225 cm/sec at spring tide and begin 0.2 hours after L.W. and 0.7 hours after H. W., respectively. Non-tidal currents flow southward with 10-20 cm/sec at west side of the stream and northward with 15-20 cm/sec at east side of the stream at Inchon Outer Harbor. The flood volume through the Inchon Outer Harbor fluctuates fortnightly from 590 10$\^$6/㎥ spring tide to 260 $10^6/m^3$ at neap tide and ebb volume changes from 470 $10^6/m^3$ at spring tide to 200 $10^6/m^3$ at neap tide, respectively. The flow area along the channel to the Estuary of Yeomha is controlled by the tidal prism as expressed by $A=1.14{\times}10^{-4}P^{0.966}$

  • The concentrations of aldehydes were measured in downtown area of Buchun and Kwanghwamoon of Seoul from October 1997 to August 1998 using 2-series impingers. The data have been analysed to identify the seasonal pattern of aldehyde sources in metropolitan areas. The measured concentration (in ppbv) of aldehydes were 8.86 $\pm$ 7.28 HCHO (formaldehyde) and 7.79$\pm$7.29 $CH_3$CHO (acetaldehyde) in Buchun, while recording 10.13$\pm$8.58 (HCHO) and 7.64$\pm$6.65 ($CH_3$CHO) in Kwanghwamoon. Their diurnal variation patterns showed significant increase of HCHO and $CH_3$CHO concentration in early afternoon, indicating an increase in secondary sources. Their concentrations however decreased in the nighttime, regardless of seasons. The strength of correlations between certain pairs such as (1) HCHO and CO and (2) $CH_3$CHO and CO were generally high during the winter months (0.64< r < 0.84), suggesting the possibility of similar source processes for HCHO, $CH_3$CHO and CO. On the other hand during the summer months, their correlations are frequently lower than winter months. We suggested that the complexity of source/sink processes during the summer period may reduce the correlations between aldehyde and CO.
